  • The effects of computer-assisted instruction (CAl) using molecular-level animation and worksheet upon students' achievement, conceptual understanding, and learning motivation were investigated. Treatment and control groups (2 classes) were selected from a girls' high school in Seoul, and taught about dissolution for 3 class hours. Before the instructions, the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Survey (PALS) was administered, and the grade for a previous science course was obtained. The PALS score was used as a covariate, and the other as a blocking variable. After the instructions, the achievement test, the conceptions test, and the Instructional Materials Motivation Scale (lMMS) were administered. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of the CAl group in the achievement and the conceptions tests were significantly higher than those of the control group. The CAl group also performed better in all subtests of the IMMS except the subtest of relevance.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze on the relations of motivation system about science learning and science achievement. TIMSS 2007 was selected and translated for science achievement test. After that, fourth-grade 496 students and eighth-grade 425 students were required to accomplish the questionnaire on behavioral inhibition/activation system about science learning(SL-BIS/BAS) and science achievement. There were negative correlation with SL-BIS and science achievement, and positive correlation with SL-BAS and science achievement. In addition, two systems account for 12% of science achievement. These results would be helpful for teachers to understand the difference about motivation by students' variables and to make a plan for the appropriate strategies for learners.

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationship between science achievement and student-related variables in the 2006 National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA), the subjects of which included 3% of students within the entire population of the grades 6, 9 and 10. The results showed that the more they talk with parents, study by themselves, and read the books, the higher the students achieved in science. The science achievement was also significantly and positively related to self-regulated learning, adaptation to school life and attitude toward science. It is implied that the approach of stimulating internal motive such as interest, attitude toward science and human relations is more effective in resulting in the students' higher science achievement than focusing on external attitudes such as forcing good study habits.

On the basis of the findings, it also aims to provide fundamental data necessary to examine the achievement emotion matched for academic settings in Korea. The objects of this study include a total of 105 domestic (n=47) and foreign (n=58) journal articles. The criteria of analysis are divided into period, contents and method of the study: the study was conducted without control of period; the contents include variables and achievement situations; and the method includes design and type of study, analysis methods, measurement tools and objects. The descriptive statistics of the materials were estimated by using the SPSS, and were analyzed by dividing them into domestic and foreign ones. The findings show that the researches on achievement emotion can be divided into examinations of the development of achievement emotion scale and those of the relationship between related variables. Thus, the conclusion suggests comprehensive discussions by arranging the trends of researches on the development of achievement emotion scale and the relationship between related variables.

  • The purpose of this study is to research the achievement motivation of beauty industry professionals. The research method involved one-on-one, in-depth interviews with 7 hair professionals, 7 make-up professionals and 7 skincare professionals. The in-depth interviews were recorded in their entirety, and the recorded content was transcribed and organized. Analysis of the transcribed data involved encoding, deconstructing and re-composing the interview content. Research results revealed 5 factors that were extracted to explain the achievement motivation of beauty industry professionals. Four of the 5 factors were similar to the results of precedent studies, but the remaining factor presented unique characteristics. The 4 common factors were "motive to pursue success", "motive to avoid failure", "motive to meet challenges" and "goal-oriented motive". The factor discovered in this study was "relationship-oriented motive", which is characterized by the tendency to place importance in relationships with superiors, colleagues and customers based on the working characteristics of beauty industry professionals. Based on the results of this study, beauty industry professionals can learn about goals that must be met in various stages in order to establish a system for accomplishing those goals, implement an emotional education program for mental balance, introduce a competitive team system, and carry out a relationship improvement program to increase work efficiency.

  • A total of 378 $4^{th}$ and $5^{th}$ grade elementary school students (194 boys and 184 girls) participated in a study investigating the direct and indirect effects (through self-esteem and/or achievement motivation) of children's perceptions of parental expectations on school happiness. First, parental expectations did not have a direct effect on children's levels of school happiness. Second, parental expectations did not have an indirect effect on children's school happiness through self-esteem. Children who perceived higher levels of parental expectations showed higher levels of self-esteem, but the path from children's self-esteem to school happiness was not significant. Third, parental expectations had an indirect effect on children's levels of school happiness through achievement motivation. Children who perceived higher levels of parental expectations showed higher levels of achievement motivation, and children with higher levels of achievement motivation reported higher levels of school happiness. Finally, parental expectations indirectly influenced children's school happiness through self-esteem and achievement motivation. These findings suggest that both environmental and individual factors need to be considered together to more comprehensively explain children's levels of school happiness.
