Their data of academic achievement also were gathered. The result of this study showed that the academic achievement and grit of participants in 'Running high' were advanced more than before, but not ego-resilience. The differences of academic achievement and grit between participants who attained the goal of the program and participants who could not attain it were significant, but not ego-resilience.

  • Utilizing the fact that student allocation to private or public high schools in Korea is done randomly within a given school district, this study conducted a natural experiment, free from selection bias, to analyze whether private schools are more effective than public schools in terms of enhancing students' academic performance. After analyzing a model that controls the fixed effects of school districts, it was found that private schools do not have a statistically significant impact compared to public schools with respect to improving academic records. Nevertheless, the private school effect has shown a positive value equivalent to 0.13 standard deviation for female students at the highest academic levels.

  • This paper undertakes an international study on impacts of private education spending on student academic performance, using the OECD's PISA 2006 data. To circumvent endogeneity of the education spending, it relies on a propensity-score matching method. The empirical results suggest thai the effect of private education spending remains only modest for all the countries examined in the PISA 2006 data. A 10 percent increase in spending leads to no more than a 0.6 percent average improvement in test scores.
