  • The effect on serum lipid of green aster juice blended with ginseng and carrot extracts was investigated using rats injected with $CCl_4$. The rats were classified with four groups: (i) normal control (NC), (ii) rats fed with the blended juice (BA), (iii) rats treated with $CCl_4$ after having been on a normal diet for 4 weeks ($NC-CCl_4$), and (iv) rats treated with $CCl_4$ after having been fed the blended juice for 4 weeks ($BA-CCl_4$). All groups had similar feed intake. The weight gains and feed efficiency ratio were lower in the $NC-CCl_4$ group. The liver weight per body weight was much higher in the $NC-CCl_4$ group than the NC group, but did not differ between the $BA-CCl_4$ and BA groups. Triglycerides increased only for the $NC-CCl_4$ group (88.72 mg/dL); the other groups had similar levels (56.48-65.33 mg/dL). The BA group had the lowest total cholesterol level (74.08 mg/dL) the other groups had similar levels (96.78-108.83 mg/dL). HDL-cholesterol was lower in the $NC-CCl_4$ group (40.56 mg/dL) compared with the NC group (48.95 mg/dL), but there was no difference between the BA and $BA-CCl_4$ groups. The LDL-cholesterol level was higher in the $NC-CCl_4$ group (55.20 mg/dL the highest level) than the NC group (43.33 mg/dL), and higher in the $BA-CCl_4$ group (50.10 mg/dL) than the BA group (18.09 mg/dL). The lipid peroxide content was much higher in the $NC-CCl_4$ group (22.61 nmol/g) than the NC group (12.52 nmol/g), but the $BA-CCl_4$ (17.41 nmol/g) and BA (13.99 nmol/g) groups were similar. The glutathione content was much lower in the $NC-CCl_4$ group ($2.25\;{\mu}mol/g$) than the NC and BA groups, and decreased to $2.63\;{\mu}mol/g$ for the $BA-CCl_4$ group. The glutathione content of the $BA-CCl_4$ recovered to the level of that in the NC group.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding patterns of concentrates on growth performance, blood parameters and carcass characteristics in Hanwoo cows. Randomly-allocated groups, restricted concentrate feeding (T1), restricted concentrate feeding for 6 months and ad libitum 2 months (T2), restricted concentrate feeding for 4 months and ad libitum 4 months (T3), were contained with 9 animals. According to feeding patterns of concentrate, growth performance was not significantly different among the treatment groups. However, ADG tended to be higher in T2 group (0.75 kg/d) compared to the other groups (T1: 0.62 kg/d, T3: 0.72 kg/d). DMI was not significantly different among the treatment groups, interestingly, rice straw intake was significantly higher in T1 group compared with others (p<0.05). There were significant difference among feed conversion ratio, which are 17.8, 12.8, and 14.1 kg for T1, T2, and T3 (p<0.05), respectively. The serum level of albumin, triglyceride, glucose and GPT were greater in T3 group compared to other groups at fattening 6 to 8 months (p<0.05). The results of yield traits, carcass weight, back fat thickness and rib eye area were not differ among treatment groups, but yield index was significantly greater in T2 group compared to T1 group (p<0.05). The 'A' appearance rate (%) of meat yield grade was highest in T2 group for 78%. The marbling score, meat color, fat color, texture and maturity in quality traits were not differ among the treatment groups. However, marbling score and appearance rate (%) of over 1st meat quality grade were tend to be increased at T3 rather (4.0, 56%) group compared with other groups (T1: 3.4, 56%; T2: 3.6, 33%). Thus, the present study suggested that restricted concentrate feeding (1.6% of BW) for 4 months during early fattening periods and ad libitum feeding for 4 months during late fattening periods are recommendable.

  • Investigations were made on catch composition, sex ratio, relationships between carapace length, body weight and fecundity and spawning season of major target shrimps (Acetes chinensis, A. japonicus) in the shrimp fishing areas of south-western coastal waters, accounting for about $45\%$ of annual shrimp landings in Korea. Catches were collected monthly in the fishing areas from March 2000 to February 2001, using single pocket-walled fishing gear, Total 59 species (shrimps 14, fishes 34, other crustaceans 8 and cephalopods 3 species) occurred. During the study period the bycatch-to-shrimp ratio of shrimp fishery was 2.42 in April 2000 and less than 1 for all months except for August 2000 and Febuary 2001. Compared with shrimp fishery of other areas and nations, these results indicate that effect of the fishing gear on catches of other species is minor, suggesting higher gear selectivity for shrimps. Of shrimps, there were two dominant species (A. chinensis, A. japonirus). Average sex ratio was 1.44 $\pm$ 0.42 for A. japonicus and 1,44 $\pm$ 0.43 for A. chinensis, which are dominant females in August. Average fecundity was 4,812 $\pm$ 1,511 for A. japonicus and 5,561 $\pm$ 1,900 for A. chinensis. In the two species mature females were found in the period from May to August. Similarly, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was higher in July and August, with a peak in July, These results indicate that their main spawning season was summer.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) for the prevention of postoperative uterus and ovary adhesion formation in the Korean black goats. Twenty adult female Korean black goats randomly were divided into five groups with four animals in each group. After the routine laparotomy, catheter for injection was inserted into the abdomen. Before abdominal closure, saline, 1% SCMC, 2% SCMC or 0.4% HA solution (50ml/10kg of body weight/head) were injected in the abdominal cavity in each group. Three weeks after surgery, second laparotomy was performed and the adhesions were scored on a scale of 0 to 10 according to their vascularity and adhesion size in uterus and ovary. This trial was repeated the four times with the interval of three weeks. In the first and second trial, the group treated with 2% SCMC significantly reduced the adhesion formation than other treatment groups (P<0.05). In the third trial, the adhesion formation was significantly reduced in 2% SCMC and 1% SCMC (P<0.05). In the fourth trial, 2% SCMC reduced the adhesion formation. However, there was no significant difference among other groups. This study showed that the 2% SCMC administered at the end of the surgery reduced the adhesion formation in the Korean black goats.

  • Twenty eight Holstein steers 12 months old and weighing about 300kg were andomly allotted into one of four groups being fed ammoniated rice straw(ARS) and substituted 30%, 40% and 50% crushed bamboo chip for ARS to determine the effects of different levels of bamboo chip on performance, digestibility and carcass characteristics. Daily weight gain was reduced as the substitution levels of bamboo chip for ARS as a roughage source increased but there were no differences in daily weight gain between steers fed ARS alone and 30% bamboo chip for ARS. Concentrates intakes were not different between treatments by the substitution levels of bamboo chip for the whole fattening period. Roughage intake tended to increase as the substitution levels of bamboo chip increased. Total feed intake was not affected by the substitution levels of bamboo chip. However, feed efficiency got worse with increasing levels of bamboo chip. Animals fed the roughage substituting 30% bamboo chip for ARS were higher in profit by 13% than animals fed ARS alone as a roughage source. Digestibilities of Dry matter(DDM) and crude fiber(DCF) were highest in animals fed ARS alone as a roughage source. DDM's were lower in higher substitution levels of crushed bamboo chip but there were no differences in DCF among animals fed different levels of bamboo chip as a roughage source. Crude protein digestibility was not affected by ammoniated rice straw or by the different levels of bamboo chip. Dressing percentage and backfat thickness were not affected by ammoniated rice straw or by the levels of bamboo chip but ribeye area was narrowed as the levels of bamboo chip increased. Beef color, fat color, texture, maturity and marbling score were not affected by feeding of ammoniated rice straw or by the levels of bamboo chip. According to these results, it may be concluded that profit can increase when Holstein bulls are castrated and roughage containing ammoniated rice straw plus 30% bamboo chip is offered.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth performance and meat quality improvement according to castration, optimal feeding management and ruminally protected amino acid-enriched fatty acid (RPAAFA) for the unselected Hanwoo bulls in the performance test. Bulls were castrated at approximately 14 months of age. Sixteen Hanwoo steers, 15 months of age and weighing $412.9{\pm}24.9kg$, were distributed into 2 groups. Steers were fed a basal diet supplemented with RPAAFA at 0 g (control) or 100 g (treatment), respectively for 12 months. Steers were slaughtered at 27 months of age. Average daily gain for treatment tended to be higher (p=0.10) than that of control, whereas feed conversion ratio tended to be lower (p=0.07) in treatment than in control. The supplementation of RPAAFA did not affect rib eye area, back fat thickness, meat color, fat color, texture and maturity. The appearance rates of yield 'A' grade and high quality grade ($1^{++}$, $1^+$ and 1) were higher in treatment than in control. The content of moisture, fat, protein and ash in longissimus muscles were similar between control and treatment. The supplementation of RPAAFA did not affect water-holding capacity, oxidation and reduction potential, myoglobin and fatty acid contents in longissimus muscles. Thus, present results indicate that castration, optimal feeding management and RPAAFA may be recommended for improving growth performance and quality grade of the unselected Hanwoo bulls in the performance test.

  • This experiment was performed to evaluate the ultrastructural responses of the absorptive cells in the appendix of the mouse, inoculated with Ehrlich carcinoma cells in the inguinal area, following administration of BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin). Healthy adult ICR mice weighing 25 gm each were divided into normal and experimental groups (experimental control group and BCG treated group). In the experimental groups, each mouse was inoculated with $1{\time}10^7$ Ehrlich carcinoma cells subcutaneously in the inguinal area. From next day after inoculations, 0.5mL of saline or BCG (0.5 mL/25gm B.W.: $0.03{\times}10^8{\sim}0.32{\times}10^8CFU$) were injected subcutaneously to the animals every other day. The day following the last injection, each mouse was sacrificed. Pieces of the tissue were taken from the appendix, prefixed with 2.5% glutaraldehyde-1.5% paraformaldehyde solution, followed by post-fixation with 1% osmium tetroxide solution. The ultrathin sections were stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate. In the normal control, experimental control and BCG treated mice, general morphology of the absorptive cells of appendix were similar. But myelin figures and intramitochondrial dense granules were more frequently observed in the absorptive cells of BCG treated mice than normal control ones. Above results show that BCG did show slight ultrastructural alterations in the absorptive cell of the appendix. These results that BCG may slightly suppress function of the absorptive cells of the appendix.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of estrogen on the periodontium and alveolar bone tissue response during experimental tooth movement in ovariectomized rats. Eighty female rats, 250gm in body weight, were classified into four groups ; sham operated group(NN), ovariectomized group(ON), ovariectomized & estrogen injected group(OE), sham operated & estrogen injected group(NE). flats were ovariectomized before 3 weeks to begin the experiment, which resulted in estrogen-deficient osteoporosis. In OE group & NE group, estrogen was injected $50{\mu}g/kg\;B.W.$ every other days. The left maxillary 1st molar was moved mesially with 60g force. Each foot rats were sacrificed after 1, 3, 7, 15 days from application of orthodontic appliance and alter additional 7 days from removal of orthodontic appliance. Histological findings on mesial roots of upper 1st molar in pressure and tension side are observed. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. In pressure side of alveolar bone, the number of osteoclasts and Howship's lacuna of ON group was significantly more than that of NN group from 1 day to 15 days(P<0.05). Especially the number of Howship's lacuna of ON group was significantly more than that of OE group during all experimental period(P<0.05). 2. In tension side of alveolar tune, the number of osteoclasts of ON group was significantly increased from 1 day to 3 days and decreased after 7 days. But the number of osteoclast of ON group was significantly mote than that of NN group during all experimental period(P<0.05). Also the number of Howship's lacuna of all groups was abruptly increased at 1 day, but slowly decreased till experimental 15 days. And the number of Howship's lacuna of of group was significantly more than that of NN group from 0 hr to 7 days(P<0.05). 3. The speed of tooth movement of OE group & NE group was similar to that of NN group(P>0.05). The amount of tooth movement of ON group between 7 days and 15 days was significantly greater than those of other groups(P<0.05). 4. The degree of relapse of ON group after 7 days from removal of orthodontic appliance was similar to those of other groups(P>0.05).

  • The effect of liquid cultures of Cordyceps militaris (LCM) on weight gain, food intakes, food efficiency ratios, serum and hepatic lipids, fecal lipids excretion, serum protein and enzyme activities, were investigated in adult female rats (30 weeks old). Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to one normal and four hyperlipidemic diet groups, Hyperlipidemic diet groups (20% fat, 1% cholesterol) were divided into high fat diet (LCM free water), 10%, 20% or 30% LCM diet groups (10%, 20% or 30% LCM in water) according to the levels of LCM supplementation. After 35 days of experimental diet consumption, the body weight gains, hepatic weights, and food efficiency ratios of the rats fed hyperlipidemic diets were significantly increased compared with those of the rats fed normal diet. The concentrations of serum and hepatic triglycerides, hepatic total lipid, and atherogenic index of the rats fed 20% or 30% LCM diets were significantly lower than those of the rats fed the high fat diet. The concentration of serum HDL-cholesterol of the rats fed all LCM diets was significantly higher than those of the rats fed the high fat diet. The fecal excretion of triglyceride in the rats fed 20% or 30% LCM diets was significantly higher than those of the rats fed high fat diet. The concentrations of serum and hepatic total cholesterol, serum LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio, fecal excretion of cholesterol, and the activities of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase and alkaline phosphatase of the rats fed all LCM diets were similar to those of the rats fed high fat diet. No differences were noted in the weights of kidney and femur, the serum concentration of glucose, total protein and albumin, and the activities of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and ${\gamma}$ -glutamyltranspeptidase, among the rats on all the experimental diets. These results showed that the 20% or 30% LCM diets feeding decreased the serum and hepatic triglycerides, and the atherogenic index, and increased the serum HDL-cholesterol of the adult female rats.

  • This study investigated the effects of diet of different forages on growth performance and carcass characteristics of Hanwoo steers. Twenty-one Hanwoo steers were randomly allocated to three groups (fed hay, reed, and reed with rice straw) of seven steers each. Initial and final body weights of control, T1, and T2 groups were 125.5, 128.3, 128.3 kg and 697.4, 614.6, 706.7 kg, respectively. Average daily gain tended to increase in controls (0.70 kg/d) and the T2 group (0.71 kg/d) but not as much in the T1 group (0.60 kg/d); however, there was no significant difference. DMI was not significantly different among the treatment groups, but T1 was relatively lower than the other groups. For the yield traits, carcass weight was not significantly different between controls and the T2 group but was greater in the T2 group compared to the T1 group (p<0.05). Back fat thickness and rib eye area were higher in controls and T2 compared to T1; yield grade (A:B:C, %) was greater in T1 (43:57:0) compared to the other groups (control 0:71:29; T2 29:42:29). For the quality traits, fat color and texture were not significantly different among groups. However, meat color and maturity were significantly greater in T1 compared to T2 (p<0.05). Marbling score and appearance rate of over 1st meat quality grade were greater in the control and T2 groups compared to the T1 group. Based on the results, growth performance, feed utilization, and carcass traits appeared to improve when roughage containing rice straw plus reed was offered. Therefore, reed is worth considering as a roughage source for fattening Hanwoo steers.
