Comparison of Plant Community Structures in Cut and Uncut Areas at Burned Area of Mt. Gumo-san (금오산(金烏山)의 산화지(山火地)에서 벌목지(伐木地)와 비벌목지(非伐木地)의 식물(植物) 군집구조(群集構造) 비교(比較))

  • This is a report on the early vegetation, plant community structure, and secondary succession of cut and uncut sites of burned areas in Mt. Gumo-sun. The forest fire occurred on April, 1994 and the pine forest and its floor vegetation were burned down. The investigation was carried out from April, 1995 to October, 1996. The results are summarized as follows : The floristic composition of cut and uncut sites of burned area and unburned area were composed of 32, 36, and 34 kinds of vascular plants respectively. The biological spectra showed the $H(G)-D_1-R_5-e$ type, $H(M)-D_1-R_5-e$ and $M(N)-D_1-R_5-e$ in cut, uncut, and unburned site respectively. The dominant species based on $SDR_3$ of the cut site were Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens(100.00). Caret humilis(52.27), Quercus serrata(51.19) and Lysimachia clethroides(39.40), however, in the uncut sites the dominant species were Quercus acutissima(56.91), Pinus densiflora(26.83) in the tree layer, Quercus serrata(50.43), Lindera glauca(40.51), Lespedeza bicolor(37.85) in the shrub layer, and Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens(72.27), Pteridium aquilium var. latiusculum(60.92), Carex humilis(63.63) in the herb layer. Pinus densiflora(99.88), Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens(82.74), Quercus serrata(77.47) and Carex humilis(74.02) were dominant in the unburned site. The species diversity(H) and evenness index(e) were 1.05, 0.70 and 1.32, 0.85 in the cut and uncut site, respectively and 0.22, 0.63 in the unburned site. Dominance index(C) was 0.15, 0.06 and 0.96 in the cut, uncut site and unburned site, respectively. Degree of succession(DS) was 345.19, 747.47 and 674.34 in cut, uncut and unburned site, respectively. The index of similarity(CCs) was 0.66 between cut and uncut sites, 0.50 between unburned and cut sites and 0.61 between unburned and uncut sites. The amount of exchangeable sodium, calcium, magnesium and soil pH were increased, but the amount of organic matter, available phosphous, total nitrogen, total carbon and exchangeable potassium were decreased in cut site after fire.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Volatile Flavor Extract from Herbal Medicinal Prescriptions Including Cnidium officinale Makino and Angelica gigas Nakai (천궁 및 당귀를 함유한 한방처방제 휘발성 향기추출물의 항염증 효과)

  • This study was conducted to develop functional sources of herbal cosmetics for treatment of skin aging and inflammatory disorders using volatile flavor extracts of four different herbal medicinal prescriptions including Cnidium officinale Makino (COM), Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN), Mentha arvense L. (MAL), Artemisiae argyi Folium (AAF), Paeonia lactiflora Pall (PLP), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (RRP), Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (SBG), Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (PGM), Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch (GUF). The volatile flavor extracts of four different herbal medicinal prescriptions (HH-1: COM, AGN, PLP, RRP, HH-2: COM, AGN, PLP, RRP, SBG, PGM, GUF, HH-3: COM, AGN, MAL, AAF, HH-4: COM, AGN, MAL, AAF, SBG, PGM, GUF) were extracted using SDE and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects were measured by using DPPH radical and SLO, respectively. As a result, HH-2 showed moderate DPPH radical scavenging activity (68.24 %) and the strongest SLO inhibitory activity (83.96 %) at 100 ${\mu}g$/mL. Moreover, HH-2 of four different prescriptions significantly inhibited NO production on LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner without considerable cell cytotoxicity at range of 2.0 ~ 50 ${\mu}g$/mL. Additionally, HH-2 also effectively suppressed the production of $PGE_2$ and IL-6, which are responsible for promoting the inflammatory process. Major volatile components of HH-2 were identified as eugenol, paeonol, butyl phthalide, ${\beta}$-eudesmol and butylidene dihydrophthalide by GC-MS analysis. Thus, these results suggest that HH-2 may be useful as a potential source of anti-inflammatory agents in herbal medicinal cosmetics.

Effects of Polyols on Antimicrobial and Preservative Efficacy in Cosmetics (화학방부제 배합량 감소를 위한 폴리올류의 항균, 방부영향력 연구)

  • It is inevitable to use germicidal agents like parabens, imidazolidinyl urea, phenoxyethanol and chlorphenesin to preserve the cosmetics. Although effective in reducing microblological contamination, chemical preservatives are irritative, allergenic and even toxic to human skin. So it is needed to decrease or eliminate usage of preservatives in cosmetic products Glycerin, butylene glycol (BG), prorylene glycol (PG), and dipropylene glycol (DPG) are widely used in cosmetics as skin conditioning agent or solvents. At high concentrations, they have antimicrobial activities, but deteriorate product quality like sensory feeling or safety. The purpose of study is to evaluate the effects of polyols on antimicrobial and preservative efficacy and confirm whether using adjusted polyols can decrease the contents of preservatives without deterioration of the quality of cosmetics. Effects of common polyols on antimicrobial activities of general preservatives were measured. BG and PG significantly (p < 0.05) increased activities of preservatives, but glycerin influenced little. It was inferred from the regression analysis of the results with S. aureus that adding 1% of PG increased activities of preservatives up to $2.1{\sim}8.4 %$ and BG improved activities of preservatives up to $1.8{\sim}8.4 %$. The challenge test results for oil in water lotions and creams showed that BG and PG improved the efficacy of preservative systems up to 40 % at a range of $5.5{\sim}9.9 %$, but glycerin had little effect on it. The measured rates of improvement were analogous to the inferences from regression analysis. It can be concluded that is possible to reduce total chemical preservatives up to 40 %, consequently improve the safety and sensory quality of cosmetics with the precision control of polyols. Added to that, using this paradigm, low preservative contents, praraben-free system, and even preservative-free systems can be expected in the near future.

Microstructural property and catalytic activity of nano-sized MnOx-CeO2/TiO2 for NH3-SCR (선택적 촉매 환원법 재료로서 나노 사이즈 MnOx-CeO2/TiO2 촉매에 대한 미세 구조적 특성과 촉매활성 평가)

  • $CeO_2$ is used as a co-catalyst with $TiO_2$ to improve the catalytic activity of $MnO_x$ and characterization of nano-sized powder is identified with de-NOx efficiency. A comparison between $MnO_x-CeO_2/TiO_2$ and single $CeO_2$ was conducted in terms of microstructural analysis to observe the behavior of $CeO_2$ in the ternary catalyst. The $MnO_x-CeO_2/TiO_2$ catalyst was synthesized by sol-gel method and the average particle size of the single $CeO_2$ is about $285{\mu}m$ due to the low thermal stability, whereas the particle size $MnO_x-CeO_2/TiO_2$ is about 130 nm. The strong interaction between Ce and Ti was identified through the EDS mapping by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The improvement about 20 % of $de-NO_x$ efficiency is observed in the low-temperature ($150^{\circ}C{\sim}250^{\circ}C$) and vigorous oxygen exchange by well-dispersed $CeO_2$ is the reason of catalytic activity improvement.

Effects of Namhae Specialized Crops Water Extract on Lipid Metabolism in Rats Fed a Cholesterol Diet (남해군 특용작물 열수 추출분말이 콜테스테롤 급이 흰쥐의 혈청 및 장기 중 지질성분에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of water extracts from Namhae special crops (NSC) on improved serum lipid composition using rats fed a 1% cholesterol diet for 4 weeks. Male Wister rats (200-210 g) were divided into six groups: Normal cholesterol diet group (Normal), 1% cholesterol diet group (Control), 1% cholesterol and NSC water extract powder supplemented groups, including, turmeric (Tu-EP), cactus (Ba-EP), aloe vera (Al-EP) and asparagus (As-EP). No significant differences were observed for food intake or body weight gain between the control and experimental groups. However, food efficiency ratio (FER) was the lowest in the As-EP group. The serum levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in the NSC water powder extract supplement groups were lower than those in the control group. The serum high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol content in the Tu-EP group was higher than that in the other experimental groups. Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL)-cholesterol content in the As-EP group was similar to that in normal group. Furthermore, the VLDL content in the Al-EP group was lower than that in the normal group. Serum antioxidant activity by TBARS level and DPPH radical scavenging were significantly higher in the Ba-EP group than that in the control group. Hepatic total cholesterol and lipid content in the Al-EP group decreased significantly compared to that in the control group. These results suggest that the NSC water extract may reduce serum cholesterol and prevent oxidative stress by stimulating antioxidative systems in rats fed a 1% cholesterol diet.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY OF ORTHODONTIC STAINLESS STEEL WIRES : COMPARING A NEW KOREAN PRODUCT WITH OTHERS FROM FOREIGN COMPANIES (여러 스테인레스 스틸 호선의 물성 및 표면의 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the property of a new Korean stainless steel wire(Jinsung Ind.) comparing with other foreign Products. Five types of stainless steel wires (Standard, Resilient, HI-T of Unitek, Stainless steel of Ormco and Jinsung Ind.) in 0.016x0.022 and 0.019x0.02 were tested to observe for Composition analysis, size difference, tensile properties, flexure bending property, tortion property, surface hardness and surface topography by means of SEM. The findings suggest that: 1. In maximum tensile strength of tensile properties, Unitek Hi-T showed the greatest value, followed by Unitek Resilient, Jinsung Stainless Steel, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Standard in 0.016x0.022, and Unitek Hi-T showed highest value, followed by Jinsung Stainless Steel, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Resilient, Unitek Standard in 0.019x 0.025. 2. In elongation rate, Unitek Standard showed the greatest value, fellowed by Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Hi-T, Unitek Resilient, Jinsung Stainless Steel in 0.016x0.022, and Unitek Hi-T showed the highest value, followed by Unitek Standard, Ormco Stainless Steel, Jinsung Stainless Steel, Unitek Resilient in 0.019x0.025. 3. In modulus of elasticity, Jinsung Stainless Steel showed the greatest value, followed by Unitek Hi-T, Unitek Resilient, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Standard in 0.016x0.022, and Unitek Resilient showed the highest value followed by Jinsung Stainless Steel, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Hi-T, Unitek Standard in 0.019x0.025. 4. In bending fatigue test, Jinsung Stainless Steel showed the greatest fracture resistance, followed by Unitek Hi-T, Unitek Standard, Unitek Resilient, Ormco Stainless Steel in 0.016x0.022, and Unitek Hi-T showed the greatest fracture resistance followed by Jinsung Stainless Steel, Unitek Resilient, Unitek Standard, Ormco Stainless Steel in 0.019x0.025. 5. In twist test, Unitek Resilient showed the greatest fracture resistance, followed by Jinsung Stainless Steel, Unitek Hi-7, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Standard in 0.016x0.022, and Jinsung showed the greatest fracture resistance, followed by Unitek Resilient, Unitek Standard, Ormco Stainless Steel, Unitek Hi-T. 6. In surface topography, every products showed indentation and pitting. Jinsung stainless steel wire showed long thin indentation and relatively smooth surface. Unitek wires showed indentation and pitting and Ormco wire showed a lot of irregular pittings.

Antioxidant Activity of Ethanol Extraction on Citron Seed by Response Surface Methodology (반응표면분석에 의한 유자씨 에탄올 추출물의 항산화활성)

  • Extraction characteristics of citron (Citrus junos Sieb. ex Tanaka) seeds and functional properties of corresponding extract were monitored by response surface methodology (RSM). Maximum extraction yield of 20.23% was obtained at extraction temperature of $50.23^{\circ}C$, extraction time of 3.03 hr, and shaking velocity of 400.06 rpm. At extraction temperature, extraction time, and shaking velocity of $49.88^{\circ}C$, 2.72 hr, and 400.39 rpm, respectively, maximum polyphenol content was 4.37 mg/g. At extraction temperature, extraction time, and shaking velocity of $50.28^{\circ}C$, 3.42 hr, and 399.96 rpm, respectively, maximum electron donating ability (EDA) was 49.69%. Maximum nitrite scavenging activity (NSA) was 47.79% at extraction temperature, extraction time, and shaking velocity of $49.19^{\circ}C$, 0.68 hr, and 602.95 rpm, respectively. Based on superimposition of 3-dimensional RSM with respect to extraction yield, polyphenol, EDA, and NSA, optimum ranges of extraction conditions were extraction temperature of $50^{\circ}C$, extraction time of about 3 hr, and shaking velocity of 400 rpm.

Effects of Processed Cuttlefish on Lipid and Immunoglobulin Levels in Mice Blood (가공오징어의 섭취가 쥐의 혈중 지질 조성 및 항체 형성 농도에 미치는 영향)

  • The content levels of taurine, DHA, and EPA of dried cuttlefish powder were $11.67{\pm}6.62\;g/kg$, $3001.11{\pm}11.42\;mg/100\;g$ and $688.13{\pm}10.51\;mg/100\;g$, respectively, which were 10~20% higher than those of the salt processed cuttlefish. After feeding dried and salt processed cuttlefish for 4 weeks, total cholesterol concentrations in mice blood were 81.3 mg/dL and 88.1 mg/dL, respectively, which was higher than 78.9 mg/dL of the control. It was also found that dried cuttlefish increased HDL-cholesterol concentrations to 71.6 mg/dL, compared to 63.1 mg/dL of salt processed cuttlefish. The triglyceride contents of dried sample was higher than that of processed sample. Blood glucose concentrations in mice fed dried or salt processed cuttlefish were 77.7 mg/dL and 90.3 mg/dL, respectively. IgG levels increased to 48.1 ng/mL by feeding the processed cuttlefish, compared to 40.3 ng/mL of the dried cuttlefish. Therefore, by analysis of serum lipid, it can be suggested that processed cuttlefish can improve immune activities through adding taurine and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Biological Activities of Yuza Grown in Different Areas (산지별 유자의 생리활성)

  • The biological compounds such as vitamin C, carotenoids, hesperidin and naringin were determined in Yuza grown in Geoje, Goseong, Gohung and Namhae. Also, activities of electron donating, nitrite scavenging and tyrosinase were detected by concentration of water extracts made from Yuza peel. Vitamin C contents of flesh sample were 6.34${\Pm}$0.12-10.74${\Pm}$1.25 mg/100 g and its contents of peel were 2.17-3.57 times higher than flesh. The carotenoid contents of peel were higher than flesh, and its contents were abundant (over 6.0 mg/100 g) in peel of Yuza grown in Goseong and Namhae-native, while Goheung-native and improved samples were detected below 3.6 mg/100 g. The contents of total phenols were the highest in flesh (11.11${\Pm}$0.10 mg/100 g) and peel (31.76 mg/100 g) of Namhae-improve Yuza. The contents of hesperidin and naringin were about 4.81-7.80, 3.07-4.62 times higher in peel than flesh. Electron donating ability of water extracts made from Yuza peel was 52.78${\Pm}$1.13-66.88${\Pm}$0.53%, in over 5 mg/mL; especially, its ability in Namhae sample was significantly high in reaction system added over 5 mg/mL of water extracts. Nitrite scavenging ability in all samples was below 30% in reaction system added 1 mg/mL of water extracts. Inhibition activity of tyrosinase in reaction system added 2.5 mg/mL of water extracts was only observed in Namhae samples, but the other samples were increased in reaction system added over 5 mg/mL of water extracts.

Studies on Organic Acid, Vitamin and Free Sugar Contents of Commercial Dried Lavers (Porphyra yezoensis) Cultivated in Korea (시판 건조김의 유기산, 비타민 및 유리당 함량)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic date for organic acid, vitamin and free sugar contents of commercial dried lavers cultivated in Korea (Seocheon, Wando, Goheung and Busan). The contents of organic acid per 100 g of dried lavers were in the range of 1,238.67~1,437.00 mg of malic acid, 1,021.67~1,309.67 mg of oxalic acid, 1,035.67~1,247.33 mg of citric acid, 1,001.00~1,146.00 mg of succinic acid, 902.00~1,107.00 mg of tartaric acid, 862.67~1,070.67 mg of lactic acid and 370.33~421.67 mg of acetic acid. The concentration of vitamin A and ${\beta}$-carotene were the highest (0.286 mg and 22.19 mg/100 g) in dried lavers cultivated from Seocheon and Wando. Vitamin $B_1$, $B_3$ and $B_{12}$ concentrations were the highest (9.79 mg, 19.15 mg and 1.77 mg/100 g) in dried lavers cultivated from Goheung, and vitamin $B_2$, $B_6$ and $B_9$ concentrations were the highest (4.55 mg, 2.36 mg and 2.17 mg/100 g) in dried lavers cultivated from Wando. The concentration of vitamin C and E contents were the highest (219.33 mg and 1.75 mg/100 g) in dried lavers cultivated from Wando. The contents of free sugar per 100 g of dried lavers were in the range of 214.27~347.72 mg of galactose, 59.10~71.69 mg of glucose, 37.86~54.34 mg of fucose and 6.26~14.65 mg of mannose.
