  • In order to utilize natural cellulosic materials as a fermentative substrate, saccharification of a various kind of native cellulosic materials was performed by using cellulase from the isolated strain, Pseudomonas sp. LBC-505 which potently produced cellulase complex and xylanase. Cellulase complex production was repressed by the low concentration of glucose, induced by cellulosic compounds such as CMC, wheat bran and rice straw et al. and showed to be highest on the PY-CMC medium containing 5% (w/v) wheat bran instead of CMC. Optimal temperature for enzyme reactions of CMCase and xylanase was $50^{\circ}C$, and $55^{\circ}C$ for $\beta$-glucosidase. Optimal pH for these enzyme reaction was 6.6. Rate of saccharification for natural cellulose was low by the treatment of crude enzyme. Among their substrates, rice straw was the most effective substrate of enzymatic reaction in this work. After treating rice straw with 5% (v/v) HC1 and hydrolysing with crude enzyme, rate of saccharification was 18.4% (w/w) on dry substrate. Sugars of cellulosic hydrolyzate mainly contained glucose, xylose and cellobiose.

  • In this study, the resistance of various reinforced concrete (RC) slabs subjected to contact detonation was assessed. In order to enhance the blast resistance, fibers and external FRP sheets were reinforced to RC slabs. In the experiment, the $2,000{\times}1,000{\times}100mm$ sized RC slabs were fabricated using normal concrete (NC), steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC), polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced cementitious composite (PVA FRCC), and ultra-high performance cementitious composites (UHPCC). The damage levels of RC slabs subjected to contact detonation were evaluated by measuring the diameter and depth of crater, spall and breach. The experimental results were compared to the analyzed data using LS-DYNA program and three different prediction equations. The diameter and depth of crater, spall and breach were able to be predicted using LS-DYNA program approximately. The damage process of RC slabs under blast load was also well expressed. Three prediction equations suggested by other researchers had limitations to apply in terms of empirical approaches, therefore it needs further research to set more analytical considerations.

  • Reinforced concrete rahmen structures has been required ductility as well as strength of beam-column joint in seismically hazard area. Some investigations have been presented for retrofitting and/or strengthening structural elements in structure. Strain-hardening cementitious composite(SHCC) has been expected excellent reinforcement performance in beam-column joint area. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic moudulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate structural performance of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joint strengthened with SHCC under cyclic loading.

  • In this paper, we proposed and implemented a novel antenna cover mounted over a microstrip path antenna for ultrafast aircraft. A protective antenna cover prevents alteration in the electrical characteristics of the antenna due to environmental conditions. The permittivity of the cover materials should be practically invariable at all operating frequencies. We evaluated the characteristics of the antenna with both simulation and experiment. The experimental results show that the proposed antenna cover can be useful for ultrafast aircraft.

  • Required performance for repair materials are strength, ductility, durability and bonding with the substrate concrete. Various kinds of fiber-reinforced cement composites (FRCCs) have been developed and used as repair materials. Strain-hardening cement based composites (SHCC) is one of the effective repair materials that can be used to improve crack-damage tolerance of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. SHCC is a superior FRCC that has multiple cracking characteristic and pseudo strain-hardening behavior. The expansive admixture, which can be used to reduce shrinkage in SHCC materials with less workability by controlling interfacial bonding performance between SHCC and substrate concrete. For the application of SHCC as a repair material to RC structures, this study investigates the flexural performance of expansive SHCC-layered concrete beam. Test variables include the replacement levels of expansive admixture (0 and 10%), repair thickness (30 and 40 mm), and compressive strength of SHCC (30, 70 and 100 MPa). Four point bending tests on concrete beams strengthened with SHCCs were carried out to evaluate the contribution of SHCC on the flexural capacity. The result suggested that expansive SHCC materials can be used for repairing and strengthening of concrete infrastructures.

  • In this paper, the Fe-activated carbon fiber (ACF)/$TiO_2$ composite catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel method. The synthesized photocatalysts were used for the photo degradation of Methylene blue solution under UV light. From Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements (BET) data, it was shown the blocking of the micropores on the surface of ACF by treatment of Fe and Ti compound. As shown in SEM images, the ferric compounds and titanium dioxides were fixed onto the ACF surfaces. The result of X-ray powder diffraction showed that the crystal phase contained a mixing anatase and rutile structure and the 'FeO+$TiO_2$' from the composites. The EDX spectra for the elemental analysis showed the presence of C, O, and Ti with Fe peaks. Degradation activity of MB could be attributed to +OH radicals derived from electron/hole pair's reactions due to photolysis of $TiO_2$ and photo-Fenton effect of Fe.

  • The mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) composites, especially the effects of the filler shapes on the modulus were studied. The experimental results were investigated and compared with the theoretical approaches proposed by Lee and Paul and based on Eshelby's principle, which three dimensional ellipsoids were filled as filler and analyzed in terms of aspect ratio, ${\rho}_\alpha=a_1/a_3$ and ${\rho}_\beta=a_1/a_2$. The shapes of fillers were observed by SEM and aspect ratios were statistically calculated. Young's moduli in the longitudinal and transverse directions for barium sulfate whose shape was sphere ($\rho_\alpha=\rho_\beta=1$) had the same values, as predicted values. The modulus in the $x_1$ direction for a glass fibers increased as the filler content increased, while the modulus in the $x_3$ direction was increased relatively small. Furthermore, mica was also used to investigate the effects of the primary and secondary aspect ratios on the mechanical properties.

  • SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composite is a promising accident-tolerant fuel cladding material to improve the safety of light water nuclear reactors. Compared to the current zirconium alloy fuel cladding as well as metallic accident-tolerant fuel cladding, SiC composite fuel cladding has exceptional accident-tolerance such as excellent structural integrity and extremely low corrosion rate during severe accident of light water nuclear reactors, which reduces reactor core temperature and delays core degradation processes. In this paper, we introduce the concept, technical issues, and properties of SiC composite accident-tolerant fuel cladding during operation and accident scenarios of light water nuclear reactors.

  • This paper presents an experimental study results on the crack control of flexure-dominant reinforced concrete beams repaired with strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC). Five RC beams were fabricated and tested until failure. One unrepaired RC beam was a control specimen (CBN) and remaining four speciemens were repaired with SHCC materials. The test parameters included two types of SHCC matrix ductility and two types of repair method (patching and layering). Test results demonstrated that RC beams repaired with SHCC showed no concrete crushing or spalling until final failure, but numerous hair cracks were observed. The control specimen CBN failed due to crushing. It is important to note that SHCC matrix can improve crack-damage mitigation and flexural behavior of RC beams such as flexural strength, post peak ductility, and energy dissipation capacity. In the perspective of crack width, crack widths in RC beams repaired with SHCC had far smaller crack width than the control specimen CBN under the same deflection. Especially, the specimens repaired with SHCC of PVA0.75%+PE0.75% showed a high durability and ductility. The crack width indicates the residual capacity of the beam since SHCC matrix can delay residual capacity degradation of the RC beams.

  • In this study, the distribution of lectin receptors in culutured fibroblast was explored using colloidal gold label complexed with lectin WGA purified from wheat germ (Triticum vulgare). The lectin WGA gold complex, shown to recognize GlcNAc (N-acetylgalactosamine) and NeuNAc (N-acetylneuraminic acid) regions, was applied to detect binding sites in Lowicryl HM 20 sections viewed under electron microscope Labeled sections of the culutured fibroblast revealed gold particles specifically distributed on the cytoplasm and cell surface of the fibroblast. Labeling of 24 hours culutured fibroblast was then quantified and compared to that of 72 hours culutured fibroblast. 24 hours culutured fibroblast sections resulted in specific gold particle distribution on the cytoplasmic vesicle of the culutured fibroblast. These results indicate that lectin WGA receptors are located in the cytoplasmic vesicle and cell surface of the 24 hours culutured fibroblast, and on the cell surface of the 72 hours culutured fibroblast. Therefore, the GlcNAc and NeuNAc regions on the cell surface appear to be functionally associated with cell-recognition and protection from other cell of the tissue, and linked with secretion and exocytosis of the fibroblast cytoplasm.
