  • The results of an experimental study on the development and the evaluation of lightweight and high strength composites utilizing by-products and calcium silicates for construction materials are presented in this paper. The composites using early strength portland cement, by-Products( f1y ash, silica fume), silica powder, quick lime, gypsum, A1 powder and fibers(PAN-derived CF, alkali-resistance GF) were prepared using various mixing conditions. As the test results show, PAN-derived CF and alkali-resistance GF were suitable for rein-forcing fiber of the composites. And the mechanical properties, such as compressive tensile flexural strength, and toughness of Lt. Wt. fiber reinforced calcium silicates cement comp-osites were improved by increasing the fly ash and silica fume contents, and fiber contents, especially by increasing fiber contents the toughness of the composites were remarkably in-creased. Also, compressive tensile flexural strength, and toughness of the composites rein-forcing PAN-derived CF were higher than those of the composites reinforcing alkali-resistance GF..

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the material strength and tensile deformation behavior of highly ductile high-strength cement composites reinforced by synthetic fibers. Materials and mixture proportions were designed to make composites with a strength level of 80 MPa in compression. Two kinds of polyethylene fibers with different properties were employed as reinforcing fibers. A series of experiments on density, compressive strength, and deformation performance was performed. Experimental results showed that the tensile behavior and cracking patterns of cement composite strongly depends on the types of reinforcing fibers. It was also demonstrated that the cement composite with a compressive strength of 77.7 MPa and a tensile strain capacity of 7.9% can be manufactured by using a proper polyethylene fiber.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a Hybrid Fiber-reinforced High Strength Lightweight Cementitious Composite (HFSLCC) incorporated with lightweight filler and hybrid fibers for lightness and high ductility. Optimal ingredients and mixture proportion were determined on the basis of the micromechanical analysis and the steady-state cracking theory considering the fracture characteristics of matrix and the interfacial properties between fibers and matrix. Then 4 mixture proportions were determined according to the type and amount of fibers and the experiment was performed to evaluate the mechanical performance of those. The HFSLCC showed 3% of tensile strain, 4.2MPa of ultimate tensile stress, 57MPa of compressive strength and $1,660kg/m^3$ of bulk density. The mechanical performance of HFSLCC incorporated with PVA fibers of 1.0 Vol.% and PE fibers of 0.5 Vol.% is similar to those of the HFSLCC incorporated with fibers of 2.0 Vol.%.

  • Recently, various fiber reinforced cementitious composites are used in order to solve problems of concrete as the brittleness breaking. Especially, in U.S.A., Europe, and Japan, ultra-high strength steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites(ultra-high strength SFRCC) with compressive strength in excess of 100 MPa were developed. However few studies have been investigated on the high-strength SFRCC in Korea. Therefore, in this paper, to make ultra-high strength SFRCC with the range of compressive strength 180MPa, it was investigated the constitute factors of ultra-high strength SFRCC influenced on the compressive strength. The experimental variables were water-binder ratio, replacement of silica fume, size and proportion of sand, type and replacement of filling powder, and using of steel fiber in ultra-high strength SFRCC. As a result, in water-binder ratio 0.20, we could make ultra-high strength SFRCC with compressive strength of 180MPa through using of silica fume, quartz sand with below 0.5mm filling powder and steel fiber.

  • Fiber is an important ingredient in strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC), which can control fracture of cementitious composite by bridging action. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic modulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. To apply SHCC to structural member, SHCC must have economical efficiency and workability as well as own excellent tensile performance. For these purposes, four-point bending and direct tensile tests on SHCC with only hybrid synthetic fibers, total fiber volume fraction, $V_f$, is 1.5%, are carried out. The research emphasis is on the mechanical properties of SHCC made in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Polyethylene (PE) fibers, and how this affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance. Also, effect of hybrid type and water-cement ratio on the behavior of SHCC was evaluated in this paper.

  • In this study, a carbonation test was conducted on cementitious composites reinforced with recycled waste rope fibers (W series) according to EN 12390-12 standards. The test results were compared to those of commercially available polypropylene fibers (P series). In the carbonation test, both the carbonation depth and area were significantly influenced by the water-to-cement ratio. Notably, the carbonation resistance performance of cementitious composites containing waste rope fibers surpassed that of commercially available PP fibers under equivalent conditions. Throughout the 250-day test period, the W series exhibited higher compressive strength values than the P series, while both series displayed a similar trend of strength increase during the same duration. During the initial stage, the W series exhibited flexural strength levels similar to those of the P series. However, in the later stages, the P series showed a higher mean flexural strength by 1.0 MPa.

  • The development of an analysis model that reflects the microstructure characteristics of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-reinforced cementitious composites, which have a highly complex microstructure, enables synergy between efficient material design and real experiments. PVA fiber orientations are an important factor that influences the mechanical behavior of PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composites. Owing to the difficulty in distinguishing the gray level value obtained from micro-CT images of PVA fibers from adjacent phases, fiber segmentation is time-consuming work. In this study, a micro-CT test with a voxel size of 0.65 ㎛3 was performed to investigate the three-dimensional distribution of fibers. To segment the fibers and generate training data, histogram, morphology, and gradient-based phase-segmentation methods were used. A U-net model was proposed to segment fibers from micro-CT images of PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composites. Data augmentation was applied to increase the accuracy of the training, using a total of 1024 images as training data. The performance of the model was evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. The trained model achieved a high fiber segmentation performance and efficiency, and the approach can be applied to other specimens as well.

  • Many researchers have reported that adding steel fiber to concrete improved its tensile and flexural strength significantly, but relatively few studies have been made on the compressive behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete. It is still less in case of high strength steel fiber-reinforced cementitious composites(SFRC). The main objective of this research is to examine the effect of adding steel fiber on the compressive strength of high strength SFRC using fiber reinforcing index(RI, $V_f(I_f/d_f)$). It was found from the study that compressive strength was noticeably increased in proportion to RI. In conclusion, the relationship between Reinforcing Index(RI) and compressive strength in case of high strength steel fiber-reinforced cementitious composites was suggested.

  • As the amount of construction wastes increase, reuse of recycled materials is being considered in research areas. While there are many experimental investigations focusing on development of mortar and concrete using the recycled materials, the studies regarding the fiber-reinforced cement composites (FRCCs) using recycled materials are still limited. In this paper, an experimental attempt has been made to investigate the effect of recycled fine aggregates and fly ash on the mechanical properties of PVA FRCCs. The cement and natural sand were respectively replaced by fly ash and recycled fine aggregates at two content levels, 25% and 50%. Ten types of PVA FRCCs mixes were fabricated and tested to investigate the flexural, compressive and direct tensile behaviors. The test results show that flexural, compressive and direct tensile strength were decreased with increase in fly ash content at all ages. In particular, flexural, compressive and direct tensile strengths of specimens, containing 50% recycled fine aggregates and 50% fly ash, showed the lowest values. The modulus of elasticity of specimens showed similar trend to the 28-day compressive strength. Poisson's ratio was increased with increase in fly ash and recycled fine aggregates content.
