A Study on the Storytelling of Traditional Folktales in Fantasy Drama (판타지 드라마에 나타난 전승 설화의 스토리텔링에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined the fantasy drama series Tale of the Nine Tailed, which uses the world view of a folktale and adopts the motif of reincarnation. Tale of the Nine Tailed adopted a cyclical structure where the fate of the past repeats itself in modern life. The traditional Korean folktales that are used in the drama series all share the same topic, but they also vary slightly by region or era. Tale of the Nine Tailed changes people's common negative perception of the nine-tailed fox. First of all, the series portrays the nine-tailed fox as an attractive male, rather than a seductive female. It also incorporated various episodes to tell the story of a heroic nine-tailed fox that uses supernatural powers to save not only those whom he loves, but also the general public. Furthermore, it was a new attempt to bring the nine-tailed fox together with other characters from different folktales into a story to make different world views merge into one. This study analyzes how the narrative structures of traditional folktales are adapted and changed in fantasy drama series, and it explains how various types of result can be created from the storylines of traditional folktales and the imaginations of the authors.

  • This paper treats indigenous themes on of Kim Si-seup(金時習). has strong local color to the others of "Keumoh-shinhwa(金鰲新話)". This novel is set in Nam-won(南原) and Manbok-sa (萬福寺)which are used to realize the subject. Not only a folk game like Jeopo is used as important tool, but the main character of the novel is native Namwon man. Kim Si-seup stayed for a long time in Namwon. Because of this experience, he can realize unique and local setting, and then can break from the convention about a place setting of classic novel. The local color on is confirmed at . This tale have come down in Namwon, and then was recorded early 1970s. This tale is very similar with , so many researchers understood that the tale is the orginal work of . However, I suggest that is the orginal. Written with Chinese character, was very difficult to read. Besides, many Chosun scholar couldn't find this novel. Nevertheless, has a strong local color, so many Namwon people could accept this novel, and could create new folk tale easily.

Study on the Creation and Usage of Cultural Contents for 'Geotaji Folk Tale' ('거타지' 설화의 문화콘텐츠 창작과 활용)

  • The object of this study is to find ways of a creation and an usage of cultural contents, based on the survey of the culture archetype facts, the culture elements and the narrative structure of 'Geotagi folk tale'. This story takes its place as our cultural archetype, because of its perfect narrative structure and the myth-like features in the story line. Additionally, various cultural elements implied in the text have the world wide universality as well as the unique traditional characters of Korea. Thus, for above reason, 'Geotagi folk tale' can be helpful in creating the new cultural contents. In creating and using the cultural contents of 'Geotagi folk tale', the first way is to build up the Digital contents including the data base of the original text and others, and the creation of graphics. The second way is to create the story bank utilizing hypertext. The third way is to make flash animations or games concerning the folk tale. and the fourth way is to to develop the symbols of the folk tale as animation characters.

  • The Purpose of this paper is, through the character-figuration aspect of existing Yeoheon Jang Hyungwang(旅軒 張顯光, 1554~1637)-related folk tales, to determine the relation between the people's awareness on Yeoheon and the change in the folk tales. Only 4 pieces of Yeoheon-related folk tales are existed ; ; Forgiving a rude son of the provincial governor generously. ; Predicting 'the frost of May' and Preventing the cold-weather damage, when he served as Euiseong governor, and ; The folk tales of origins of the place name - Chimabawi Rockand Yeoheondae. shows the great scholar's liberal-hearted and generous personality. One day Jang Hyungwang looked shabby and a young person was quite rude to him. But Jang Hyungwang forgive him generously. Also Yeoheon teach him the thrift and modesty. described him as a governor filled with a love for the people. He tried to edify the people with the Confucian ethics and improve the life's work of the people. embodied him as a government official of high integrity. When his wife received the silk slip from the people, as farewell gift, he ordered his wife return that. and show the images of the Predicting the future and an extraordinary moralizer. Generally These folk tales are based on his personality, whereabouts and the real case. So we could find his images in the folk tales are close to his actual feature - thrift, modest, noble-minded, well-versed in Iching and practicing moral statesmanship.

Study on Digitalization of Cultural Archetype Based on the Tale of Cheoyong (처용설화의 문화원형 디지털콘텐츠화에 관한 연구)

  • Korean traditional culture has a long history and it is rooted in the deep down our national culture. It is like bread and pride for Korean people. The tale of Cheyong is a precious cultural heritage, which has existed in the public awareness of the Korean people since the period of unified Silla. Based on its mysterious and beautiful story, the value of traditional culture can be revealed through development of digital contents. With such precious cultural resource we can digitalize the fun contents which the general public can enjoy. Ways of digitalize of cultural archetype has been suggested by analyzing the content elements of the tale of Cheyong. Also, by making scientific approach to the development process of digitalization, the possibility of digitalization has been found through 3D animation restoration process for Cheyong Dance and the process of making the tale of Cheyong into animation. Through analyzing the contents development process of cultural archetype of the tale of Chetyong, a cultural archetype sourcehas been developed which has a great value as a contents product that can be developed and used as various cultural content art works. With studies on the theory of development method for digitalization of traditional culture, scientific studies and investigation have to be continuously carried out so the digitalization of Korean cultural heritage, which will shine in the world, can be continued as well.

A Study on the Modern Transformation of a Tale - A Focused comparison of case studies from China, Japan and India (설화 <호랑이 눈썹>의 현대적 변용 연구 - 중국, 일본, 인도 사례와의 비교를 중심으로 -)

  • The objective of this study is to compare the modern transformation of a folk tale in each country. A folk tale is a story about a man who obtained an ability to see the original look of humans with tiger's eyebrows successfully found a new wife suitable for him by using them. In Korea, China, Japan, and India, folk tales similar to have been transmitted. 'Tiger's Eyebrows' is differently shown in each country like 'Wolf's Eyebrows' in Japan, 'Tiger's Whisker' in China, and 'Vulture's Feather' in India. This paper looked for works that modernly transformed this folk tale in each country. In the results, there were diverse works in each country such as fairy tale book, musical, short story, and game in Korea, full-length novel in China, and fairy tale, animation, and cartoon in Japan. Meanwhile, in India, there was only a mention of the folk tale in a collection of papers. Among them, there were works showing the significance of modern transformation in the aspect of genre or contents like a short story of Korea, a full-length novel of China, and a cartoon of Japan. The Korean novel shows that human is a being with the animal's instinct while human tries to ignore it. On the other hand, the Chinese novel shows that humans are not much different from animals especially in case when facing pains or death. The Japanese cartoon shows that it is meaningless to feel shame as human in the world which is filled with monsters or animals. In India, there were no works modernly transformed because Indian folk tales might be stories based on the mythic belief rather than fun.

  • In the [Samguk sagi], is the origin story of , a Pansori novel from the late Joseon period. is derived from an Indian folktale. This article examines the narrative changes from the Indian folktale. Through this, I attempt to examine how the short fable developed into a fascinating story with numerous variants like . The five kinds of stories that I have observed all indicate the development of a common narrative. They also have a common character: terrestrial animals, deputy, and aquatic animals. However, in the original story, the more the character is brought up, the greater the persuasiveness of the action. In addition, the scale of the conflict expands due to the reorganization of the incident. Moreover, the theme of the narrative has diversified by utilizing the space as a contrast. Discussions reveal that a single story or storyteller does not create a fascinating story. The implication being that several narratives and numerous people together make the narrative changes.

A Study on the Differences between Jinmuk Tales in Buddhism and Daesoon Thought (불교와 대순사상에 나타난 진묵설화의 차이점)

  • In this paper, I will compare the Jinmuk tales from Korean Buddhism and those which appear in Daesoon Thought. Specifically, I will compare the Jinmuk tales from the Jinmukjosayujeokko (震黙祖師遺蹟攷, A Study on the Remains of Patriarch Jinmuk) and those from the Jeongyeong (典經), and then study the differences between the two sources. In chapter two, I approach Jinmuk's thought as conveyed in the Jinmukjosayujeokko by examining four points. The first point is that Jinmuk is a transformation-body (an incarnation) of Sakyamuni (釋迦牟尼) Buddha. In the preface of the Jinmukjosayujeokko, Choui (艸衣) says that Jinmuk is a transformation-body of Sakyamuni Buddha. The second point is the spirit of unobstructed action (無礙行), the third point is the spirit of the fundamental congruence between meditative and doctrinal approaches (禪敎一致), and the fourth is the spirit of the fundamental congruence between Confucianism and Buddhism (儒佛一致). In chapter three, I study on the viewpoints which can be derived from Jinmuk tales in Daesoon Thought, and compare the Jinmuk tales from the Jinmukjosayujeokko and the Jeongyeong. The Jinmuk tales from the Jeongyeong can be characterized by the Daesoon concepts 'Cheonji Gongsa (天地公事, The Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth)' and 'Haewon Sangsang (解冤相生, The Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficience)'. This is the key difference between the Jinmuk tales from Korean Buddhism and those from Daesoon Thought. If I compare the common subject matter of the Jinmuk tales in the Jinmukjosa yujeokko and the Jeongyeong, the Jinmuk tales from these two sources likewise contain differences. Why do these differences occur? I will explain these differences based on Mircea Eliade's approach to mythology. Eliadian theory posits that myths contain the desires of those who deliver the myths. If I explain the difference between the Jinmuk tales in the Jinmukjosayujeokko and the Jeongyeong based on Eliade's theory, Buddhism has Jinmuk tales composed to reflect Buddhist values, whereas Daesoon Thought has Jinmuk tales composed to reflect the values of Daesoon Thought. As Korean Buddhism and Daesoon Thought promote different values, they thereby have different Jinmuk tales.

  • This study attempted literary therapy approach to establish a healthy identity of Korean married immigrant women by using . The research suggests the difficulties of forming a healthy identity in the process of adaptation of Korean marriage imm6igrants to international marriage, and suggests a literary therapeutic alternative using the narrative structure of Ondal tales. In this study, we used the proven narrative, classical literature, to help the marriage migrant women to develop healthy self - narration, and furthermore, the possibility of reestablishing a healthy identity is centered on their human relations. The research suggests that self-narratives can provide a confidence that a happy life can be managed by providing a literary therapeutic alternative to establish a healthy identity. Through this study, it was positively pointed out that married immigrant women can utilize classical literature in their programs for establishing a healthy identity and that they can have an expected effect on their understanding of Korean culture and Korean language ability.
