  • The randomness in the strength of a RC member is caused mainly by the variability of the mechanical properties of concrete and steel, the dimensions of concrete cross sections, and the placement of reinforcing bars and so on . Among those variations, the randomness and uncertainty of mechanical properties of concrete, such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and elastic modulus give the most significant influences and show relatively large statistical variations. In Korea, there has been little effort for the construction of its own statistical models for mechanical properties of concrete and steel, thus the foreign data have been utilized till now. In this paper, variability of compressive strength, tensile strength and elastic modulus of normal-weight structural concrete with various specified design compressive strength levels are examined based on the data obtained from a number of published and unpublished sources in this country and additional laboratory tests done by the authors. The inherent probabilistic models for compressive and tensile strength of normal-weight concrete are proposed as Gaussian distribution. Also, the relationships between compressive and splitting tensile strength and between compressive strength and elastic modulus in current KCI Code are verified and new ones are suggested based on local data.

  • The direct strength method (DSM) has been adopted by the NAS (2004) and AS/NZS 4600 (2005) for the design of cold-formed steel members. The method can be successfully applied to the design of welded steel members. This paper reviews the development of the DSM for welded steel structural members. The design strength formulae for welded section columns and beams for the DSM are based on the test results performed on welded H-section, C-section, circular and rectangular hollow section columns, plate girders and stiffened plates. The comparison between the design strength of welded sections predicted by the DSM and that estimated by existing specifications is also provided. The comparison verifies that the DSM can properly predict the compressive, flexural and shear strength of welded section columns and beams with the interaction between local and overall buckling.

  • In this study, inelastic buckling strength of HSA800 steel columns were tested to investigate the applicability of current column curve (KBC2009, 2010 AISC-LRFD) to HSA800 steel. Key test variables included width-thickness ratio, plate-edge restraints, and column slenderness ratio. Specimens made of ordinary steel (SM490) were also tested for comparison purposes. All the concentrically loaded HSA800 specimens exhibited sufficient buckling strength compared to the current column curve, but some of SM490 specimens showed understrength. This difference can be explained by the lower residual stress present in HSA800 specimens.

  • The RC buildings which are constructed on the seaside are followed by KBC(2016) to achieve the minimization of durability damage. To control the corrosion of the reinforcing steel bar by salt attack, W/C should be under 0.4 and specified concrete strength is higher than 35MPa in the concrete/building construction standard specification. Even though it has been proved that the concrete mixed with mineral admixture such as blast furnace slag and fly ash etc. have high strength and durability in previous researches, the beneficial informations are not applied to the codes. Ready-mixed concretes which usually include the admixtures in Busan were tested to certify the salt attack durability. In the same specified concrete strength, remarkable salt attack durability was evaluated in comparison to OPC. For economical and reliable durability design, chloride ion diffusivity should be measured before applying to new building construction.

  • In this study, stub columns subjected to concentrical and eccentrical loads were tested to check the applicability of the current local stability criteria (KBC2009, AISC2005) to 800MPa high-strength steel (HSA800). The key test variables in the concentrically loaded tests included the plate-edge restraints and the width-to-thickness ratio normalized by the yield strength of steel. Specimens made of ordinary steel (SM490) were also tested for comparative purposes. Eccentrically loaded stub column tests were conducted for a range of the P-M combinations by controlling the loading eccentricity. All the concentrically loaded specimens with non-compact and slender sections developed sufficient strengths according to the current local stability criteria. All the eccentrically loaded specimens with non-compact H sections also exhibited a sufficient P-M interaction strength that was even higher than that of compact H- section counterparts. Residual stresses were also measured by using the non-destructive indentation method to demonstrate their dependency or independency on the steel material's yield strength. The measured results of this study also indicated that the magnitude of residual stresses bears no strong relation to the yield strength of the steel material.

  • Compression splices are required for all compression members in almost all of the floors in high-rise buildings. Therefore, a clear understanding of the behavior of compression splices can provide a rational design of compression splices. Tests of compression splices with bearing only and bond only cases were conducted to investigate the component resistance characteristics of compression splices. Test results showed that the circumferential tensile stresses induced by bearing and bond overlapped at the end of the splice length deterred bond and bearing splices from developing target splicing strength when both normal bond and bearing splices were used. In particular, the bearing strength was more significantly reduced than the bond strength since the bearing relied on the limited area near the end of the splice length. However, the strength of the normal splice was always higher than the strength of the bond only or the bearing only case. Consequently, the study results showed that splice strength in compression cannot be improved by means of removing bond or bearing. In addition, the bond strength in bond only splices was nearly same as the bond strength in tension splices and the strength increase of compression splice is attributed to end bearing only characteristic.

  • In the present study, an improved design method was developed for the punching shear strength of interior slabcolumn connections and column footings with and without shear reinforcement. In the evaluation of the punching shear strength, the possible failure mechanisms of the connections and column footings were considered. The considered failures modes were inclined tensile cracking of concrete, yielding of shear re-bars, and concrete crushing of compression zone/strut. The punching shear applied to the concrete critical section was assumed to be resisted mainly by the compression zone. The punching shear strength of the concrete compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of the concrete subjected to the compressive normal stress and shear stress. For verification of the proposed design method, its prediction was compared with the existing test results. The result showed that the proposed method predicted the strengths of the test specimens better than the current design methods of the KCI code for both the shear reinforced and unreinforced cases.

  • A compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete according to current design codes. New criteria for the compression lap splice including the effects of concrete strength are required for practical purpose of ultra-high strength concrete. Characteristics of compression lap splice have been extensively investigated and main parameters are derived. In addition, an experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 40 and 60 MPa. The strength of the compression lap splice consists of bond and end bearing and two contributors are combined. Therefore, combined action of bond and end bearing should be assessed. Compared with tension splices, concrete strength significantly affects the strength of compression splices due to short splice length and existence of end bearing. Test results show that the splice strength can be evaluated to be proportional to square root of compressive strength of concrete. The stress states of concrete surrounding spliced bars govern the strengths of bond and end bearing. Because the axial stress of the concrete is relatively high, the splice strength is not dependent on clear spacing. End bearing strength is not affected by splice length and clear spacing and is expressed with a function of the square root of concrete strength. The failure mode of specimens is similar to side-face blowout of pullout test of anchors and the strength of end bearing can be evaluated using the equation of side-face blowout strength. Because the stresses developed by bond in compression splices are nearly identical to those in tension splices, strength increment of compression splices is attributed to end bearing only.

  • Five concrete compressive stress-strain models have been analyzed to check the validity of the strength method for determining the nominal moment of strengthened members using commercially available computer language. The results show that the concrete stress-strain models do not influence on the flexural analysis. The moment of a strengthened member obtained from the flexural analysis at concrete compressive strain reaching 0.003 is well agreed with nominal moment using the strength method. The flexural analysis results show that when the steel reinforcement, FRP ratio, FRP failure strain, and concrete failure compressive strain are relatively lower, the strength method overestimates the flexural capacity of the strengthened members.
