  • We have been noticing the unstable phenomena of measured data which may give a bad influence on the prediction of powering performance characteristics. In this paper, ununiformity of water temperature according to the water depth in towing tank, variation of water temperature between summer and winter, effect of turbulence stimulator and double line phenomena in the resistance test are investigated. And circulating the tank water, heating the towing tank, degassing the tank water and improving the turbulence stimulator are proposed as it's solutions.

  • Dynamic measurements are used rather sparingly to determine the elastic modull of rock cores and modulus values are not much utilized in design practice. The reason seems to result from the general perception that values obtained by dynamic measurement are much higher (about 10 times) than those determined statically. This paper presents results from dynamic and static tests on rock cores. The findings are: 1) elastic modull can be consistently determined by laboratory seismic testing. 2) nonlinear deformation characteristics of rock cores was tentatively proposed with variation in elastic modulus with strain.

  • In this study, conceptual design of the fore-body hull form of catamaran type dredging vessel was performed that can effectively remove the contaminated sediments in coastal seabed. The hull form was simpled for the easy hull construction and the resistance performance was investigated to find out the effect of hull form parameters between variation of waterline and angle of entrance, etc. The relation between resistance performance and characteristics of free surface flows according to variation of bow forms was investigated by model testing in the circulating water channel and using Ansys CFX. The improvement of ship resistance performance to the wave resistance decrease due to improved wave pattern has been verified according to move the stem and the volume of the shoulder to the fore part of the vessel.

  • The failure mechanism and failure morphology of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) tubing under hydrostatic pressure were investigated. Microscopic observations using video microscope and scanning electron microscope indicate that the failure mode is a brittle fracture including cracks propagated from inner wall to outer wall. In addition, oxidation induction time and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results show the presence of exothermic peak and the increase in carbonyl index on the surface of fractured LLDPE tubing, due to thermal-degradation. An accelerated life test methodology and testing system for LLDPE tubing are developed using the relationship between stresses and life characteristics by means of thermal acceleration. Statistical approaches using the Arrhenius model and Weibull distribution are implemented to estimate the long-term life time of LLDPE tubing under hydrostatic pressure. Consequently, the long-term life time of LLDPE tubing at the operating temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ could be predicted and also be analyzed.

  • In the case of composite material, a variety of characteristics were expressed depending on the materials that were composed of. In this study, the materials showing non-linear shear behavior were investigated among FRP composite. Each specimen was designed and analyzed according to ASTM D4255 method: regulations on the 2-rail. The dependent variables included in this experiment were a variety of fiber, fiber volume ratio, fiber array direction, temperature, material homogeneity. For determination of characteristics based on the fiber array, fiber array direction of 0, 30, 45, and 60 degrees were selected for test specimen. Temperature of 25, 40, 60, and $80^{\circ}C$ were considered for investigation of FRP materials'shear behavior based on the external temperature. Nonlinear shear behavior was observed throughout the FRP composite material in this study. Also, using vinyl ester resins, high fiber volume ratio, and fiber array direction of 45 degree appeared to show the most prominent nonlinear shear behavior. As for the findings related to the temperature change, non-linear behavior was decreased as the external temperature increased. For factory manufactured product, non-linear behavior was relatively at parity in comparison to the behavior found in the hand lay-up FRP composite specimen.

  • In this study, the motion control techniques allied to the test ship NARAE are summarized and the results of sea trials are resented. NARAE adopted a hybrid hull form with lower hull and submerged foils. This type of ship has a substantial instability in heave, pitch and roll modes at the foil-borne stage due to little restoring force, so an active control is indispensable to keep the stability. 4-hydraulic actuators with servo valves were installed to drive foils, and several sensors were used to measure the motion of the ship. PID controller was adopted as a motion controller, and for the real-time control, Pentium-class industrial PC was used. Sea trials including take-off, landing, and banked turn maneuvering were carried out for a period of over 3 months and quite satisfactory results were obtained.
