  • The synergistic effects in mechanical mixture catalysts of Mo-V-O and metal oxide were investigated for the selective oxidation of acrolein. The metal oxides used are $SnO_2$, ${\alpha}-Sb_2O_4$, $WO_3$, ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, CuO, $MnO_2$, $Cu_2O$, MgO, CoO, and ZnO. Mechanical mixtures of Mo-V-O plus $SnO_2$ or ${\alpha}-Sb_2O_4$ had resulted in higher conversion of acrolein and higher yield of acrylic acid than Mo-V-O. The origin of the synergy is attributed to the cooperation of Mo-V-O and $SnO_2$ or ${\alpha}-Sb_2O_4$, in which $SnO_2$ or ${\alpha}-Sb_2O_4$ forms dissociated oxygens at their oxygen vacancies and transports them to Mo-V-O. $Cu_2O$, MgO, CuO, and $MnO_2$, increased conversion of acrolein but decreased yield of acrylic acid. CoO and ZnO inhibited the catalytic performance of Mo-V-O. The different role of these metal oxides is explained in terms of their oxidation-reduction properties.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the optimum conditions of operational parameters using factorial design for phenol degradation in photocatalytic oxidation reactors. Factorial design is widely used to select the dominant factors and their ranges in experiments involving several factors where it is necessary to study the effect of factors on a response. The effects of initial concentration of phenol, intensity of UV light and surface area of catalyst on phenol degradation were investigated. Two levels were considered in this study so that the experiment was a $2^3$ factorial design with three replicates. The experimental results show that an increase in initial concentration of phenol from 5 to 50 mg/L intensity of UV light from 5,000 to $20,000\;{\mu}W/cm^2$, and surface area of catalyst from 740 to $2,105\;cm^2$ enhanced the phenol degradation rate by an average of 1.86, 1.79, and 2.10 mg/L hr, respectively. Interaction effects do not appear to be as large on the phenol degradation rate as the main effects of single factors. The optimum working condition for photocatalytic oxidation reactors, despite the higher three factors the better removal rate, is the highest surface area or catalyst.

  • Heterogeneously-catalyzed oxidation of aqueous phase trichloroethylene (TCE) over supported metal oxides has been conducted to establish an approach to eliminate ppm levels of organic compounds in water. A continuous flow reactor system was designed to effect predominant reaction parameters in determining catalytic activity of the catalysts for wet TCE decomposition as a model reaction. 5 wt.% $CoO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst exhibited a transient period in activity vs. on-stream time behavior, suggesting that the surface structure of the $CoO_x$ might be altered with on-stream hours; regardless, it is probable to be the most promising catalyst. Not only could the bare support be inactive for the wet decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, but no TCE removal also occurred by the process of adsorption on $TiO_2$ surface. The catalytic activity was independent of all particle sizes used, thereby representing no mass transfer limitation in intraparticle diffusion. Very low TCE conversion appeared for $TiO_2$-supported $NiO_x$ and $CrO_x$ catalysts. Wet oxidation performance of supported Cu and Fe catalysts, obtained through an incipient wetness and ion exchange technique, was dependent primarily on the kinds of the metal oxides, in addition to the acidic solid supports and the preparation routes. 5 wt.% $FeO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst gave no activity in the oxidation reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, while 1.2 wt.% Fe-MFI was active for the wet decomposition depending on time on-stream. The noticeable difference in activity of the both catalysts suggests that the Fe oxidation states involved to catalytic redox cycle during the course of reaction play a significant role in catalyzing the wet decomposition as well as in maintaining the time on-stream activity. Based on the results of different $CoO_x$ loadings and reaction temperatures for the decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$ with $CoO_x/TiO_2$, the catalyst possessed an optimal $CoO_x$ amount at which higher reaction temperatures facilitated the catalytic TCE conversion. Small amounts of the active ingredient could be dissolved by acidic leaching but such a process gave no appreciable activity loss of the $CoO_x$ catalyst.

  • Iron oxides ($Fe_3O_4$) are metabolically secreted after endocytosed by cells, indicating no cytotoxicity. Therefore, they are widely used as a contrast agent before photographing of magnetic resonance imaging. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles are synthesized by the co-precipitation method and subsequently immobilized with a homing peptide (AP), which specifically interacts with interleukin-4 receptor located on the membrane of endothelial and bladder cancer cells. The size of AP-immobilized iron oxide particle is about 39 nm. Intracellular uptake of the AP-immobilized iron oxide nanoparticles was investigated using bladder cancer cells and fibroblasts as the control. As the result, the nanoparticles are specificially uptaken by bladder cancer cells. However, the nanoparticles are not specificially uptaken by fibroblast. It could be said that the AP-immobilized iron oxide nanoparticles have a potential to be used as a contrast agent for early diagnosis of cancer.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal condition for the hydrogen-rich gas production and the CO removal by reforming of gliding arc plasma reforming system using biogas. The parametric screening studies were carried out according to changes of steam feed amount, catalyst bed temperature in water gas reactor and catalyst bed temperature, input air flow rate in preferential oxidation reactor. The standard condition is as follows. The steam/carbon ratio, catalyst bed temperature, total gas flow rate, input electric power and biogas composition rate ($CH_4$ : $CO_2$) were fixed 3, $700^{\circ}C$, 16 L/min, 2.4 kW and 6 : 4, respectively. The results are as follow, HTS optimum operating conditions were S/C ratio of 3 and reactor temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. LTS were S/C ratio of 2.9 and temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. Also, PROX I optimum conditions were input air flow rate of 300 mL/min and reactor temperature of $190^{\circ}C$. PROX II were 200 mL/min and $190^{\circ}C$ respectively. After having passed through each reactor, the results were as follows: 55% of $H_{2}$ yield, 0% of CO selectivity, 99% of $CH_4$ conversion rate, 27% of $CO_2$ conversion rate, respectively.

  • Water leaching of tungsten(W) and vanadium(V) was researched from their oxides through mechanochemical (MC) reaction with alkali compounds. Intensive grinding for the mixture of tungsten/vanadium oxide and alkali compounds (NaOH, $Na2CO_3$) was carried out with change of their mixing ratios and grinding duration. Water soluble compounds, $Na_2WO_4$ and $NaVO_3$, were synthesized through MC reaction and their solubilities increased in proportion to the mixing ratio of sodium compound and grinding times. Whereas vanadium leachability was less affected by the mixting ratio and grinding times. The leachabilities of 99.0% were accomplished by a short period of MC treatment, W (30 min.) and V (5 min.). This process enable us to extract W and V from their oxides via a water leaching, and can be applied to the selective recovery of W and V from $DeNO_x$ spent catalysts.

  • Ethylphenyl carbarmate(EPC) was synthesized by oxidative CO carbonylation of aniline in the presence of transition metal catalysts and alkali metal halide cocatalysts at $120^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 79atm. Oxygen gas was used for oxidizing agent. Kinetics of the reaction was studied and activation energies with different catalysts were estimated. About 100% conversion to EPC and 95% selectivity was obtained in 5 hour reaction. 5% Pd/C was more effective than 5% Rh/C. Effectiveness of cocatalysts was in the order of KI>KBr>KCl. As the temperature increased from $75^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$, the conversion rate increased. The reaction was apparent first order and the activation energies with 5% Pd/C and 5% Rh/C were 5.647 and 5.780 kcal/mol, respectively.

  • The policy-making and technological development of eco-friendly automobiles designed to increase their supply is ongoing, but the internal combustion engine still accounts for approximately 95% of automobiles in use. To meet the stricter emission regulations of internal combustion engines based on fossil fuels, the proportion of after-treatments for vehicles and (ocean going) vessels is increasing continuously. As diesel engines have high power and good fuel economy in addition to less CO2 emissions, their market share is increasing not only in commercial vehicles, but also in passenger cars. Because of the characteristics of the diesel combustion, however, NOx is generated in localized high-temperature combustion regions, and particulates are formed in the zones of diffusion combustion. LNT and urea-SCR catalysts have been developed for the after-treatment of exhaust gas to reduce NOx in diesel vehicles. This study examined the effect of a containing promoter on SCR catalysts to cope with the severe exhaust gas regulation. The de-NOx performance of the Mn-SCR catalyst was the best, and the de-NOx performance was improved as the ion exchange rate between Mn ion and Zeolyst was good and the activation energy was low. The de-NOx performance of the 7Cu-15Ba/78Zeoyst catalyst was 32% at $200^{\circ}C$ and 30% at $500^{\circ}C$, and showed the highest performance. The NOx storage material of BaO loaded as a promoter was well dispersed in the Cu-SCR catalyst and the additional de-NOx performance of BaO was affected by the reduction reaction of the Cu-SCR catalyst. Among the three catalysts, the 7Cu-15Ba/Zeolyst SCR catalyst was resistant to thermal degradation. The same type of CuO due to thermal degradation migrates and agglomerates because BaO reduces the agglomeration of the main catalyst CuO particles.

  • Tetradentate Schiff base Cobalt(II)(3MeOSED)$(H_2O)_2$ complexe was synthesized and allowed to react with dry oxygen to form oxygen adducts of Cobalt(III) complexes such as ${\mu}$-peroxo type [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(DMF)]$_2O_2$ and [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(DMSO)]$_2O_2$in DMF and DMSO or superoxo type [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(Py)]$O_2$ in pyridine. The oxygen adducted complex was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and DPP method with glassy carbon electrode in 0.1M TEAP-DMF (-DMSO,-Py) as supporting electrolyte solution. As a result the reduction reaction process occurred to four steps including prewave Of $O_2^-$in 1 : 1 oxygen adducted superoxo type [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(Py)]$O_2$complex and three steps not including prewave of $O_2^-$ in 1 : 2 oxygen adducted ${\mu}$-peroxo type [Co(III)-(3MeOSED)(DMF)]$_2O_2$ and [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(DMSO)]$_2O_2$. A superoxo type [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(L)]$O_2\;(L: CH_3OH)$ was generated with oxygen in methanol. Selectively oxidized hydrazobenzene $(H_2AB)$ to trans-azobenzene(t-AB) and the rate constant k for oxidation reaction of the following equation is $(2.96 {\pm} 0.2)$${\times}$ $10^{-1}$M/sec. $H_2AB$ + Co (II)(3MeOSED)$(L_2)+O_2\;{\rightleftarrow^K}$ [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(L)]$O_2{\cdot}H_2AB{\longrightarrow^K}$ Co(II(3MeOSED)$(L)_2$+t-AB+$H_2O_2 $.

  • The Co and Ni catalysts supported on $Al_2O_3$ for partial oxidation of methane producing hydrogen were synthesized using impregnation to incipient wetness. And the promotion effects of metals such as Mg, Ce, La and Sr in partial oxidation of methane over these $Co/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ were investigated. Reaction activity of these catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane was investigated in the temperature range of 450~$650^{\circ}C$ at 1 atm and $CH_2/O_2$ = 2.0. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD and SEM/EDX. The results indicated that the catalytic performance of these catalysts was improved with the addition of 0.2 wt% metal promoter. The Mg promoted $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed the highest $CH_4$ conversion and hydrogen selectivity at higher temperature than $500^{\circ}C$. The Ce and Sr promoted Ni catalysts superior to Co-based catalysts in the low temperature range. The addition of metal promoter to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts increased the surface area.
