Cobalt-chromium alloys are used to fabricate various dental prostheses, and have advantages of low cost and excellent mechanical properties compared to other alloys. Recently, selective laser melting, which is an additive manufacturing method, has been used to overcome the disadvantages of the conventional fabrication method. A local rapid heating and cooling process of selective laser melting induces fine microstructures, grain refinement, and reduction of porosities of the alloys. Therefore, it can improve mechanical properties compared to the alloys fabricated by the conventional method. On the other hand, layering process and rapid heating and cooling cause accumulation of a large amount of residual stresses that can adversely affect the mechanical properties. A heat treatment for removing residual stresses through recovery and recrystallization process caused complicated changes in mechanical properties induced by phase transformation, precipitate and homogenization of the microstructures. The purpose of this review was to compare the manufacturing methods of Co-Cr alloys and to investigate the characteristics of Co-Cr alloys fabricated by selective laser melting.

Selective laser melting(SLM) is one of the powder bed fusion(PBF) processes, which enables quicker production of nearly fully dense metal parts with a complex geometry at a moderate cost. However, the process still lacks knowledge and the experimental evaluation of possible process parameter sets is costly. Thus, this study presents a finite element analysis model of the SLM process to predict the melt pool characteristics. The physical phenomena including the phase transformation and the degree of consolidation are considered in the model with the effective method to model the volume shrinkage and the evaporated material removal. The proposed model is used to predict the melt pool dimensions and validated with the experimental results from single track scanning process of Ti-6Al-4V. The analysis result agrees with the measured data with a reasonable accuracy and the result is then used to evaluated each of the process parameter set.
The material of the dental prosthesis was required bio-compatibility for biological, chemical, and physical stabilities. This study was conducted the stability evaluation of mechanical, biological characteristics through comparing Co-Cr alloy(SC group), Ti alloy(ST group) made by the selective laser melting method with Co-Cr alloy(CC group), Ni-Cr alloy(CN group) made by the casting method. Modulus of elasticity for mechanical characteristic evaluation was measured by the tensile test. And we conducted the release material analysis using lactic acid-NaCl solution for the evaluation of biological stability and were observed cytotoxicity through the content of this release medium. Taking these results into account, the Co-Cr alloy made by the selective laser melting method was observed modulus of elasticity higher than he Co-Cr alloy made by the casting method. And the Co-Cr alloy made by the selective laser melting method had more superior biological stability than the other groups as the result of cytotoxicity evaluation through the release material analysis. By this results, we think that alloys made by the selective laser melting method can be applied as materials for making the dental prosthesis.

Investigations of process parameters are essential when fabricating high-quality parts using additive manufacturing. This study investigates the change in the mechanical characteristics of a SUS316L specimen fabricated using selective laser melting based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio. The SUS316L powder particles were spherical and 35 ㎛ in size. Single-bead and hexahedral shape deposition experiments were performed sequentially. A single bead experiment was performed to obtain the bead overlap ratios for different laser parameters utilizing laser power and scan speed as experimental parameters. A hexahedral shape deposition experiment was also performed to observe the difference in mechanical properties, such as the internal porosity, surface roughness, and hardness, based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio of the three-dimensional printed part. Laser power, scan speed, overlap ratio, and layer thickness were chosen as parameters for the hexahedral shape deposition experiment. Accordingly, the energy density applied for three-dimensional printing, and the experimental parameters were calculated, and the energy density and bead overlap ratio for fabricating parts with good properties have been suggested.

Selective Laser Melting is one of the representative 3D printing techniques for handling metal materials. The main factors influencing the characteristics of structures fabricated by the SLM method include the build-up angle of structures, laser power, laser scan speed, and scan spacing. In this study, the tensile properties of AlSi10Mg alloys were investigated by considering the build-up angle of tensile test specimens, laser scanning speed and scan spacing as variables. The yield stress, tensile strength, and elongation were considered as tensile properties. From the test results, it was confirmed that the yield stress values were lowered in the order of 0, 45, and 90 based on the manufacturing direction of the tensile specimen. The maximum yield stress value was obtained at 1870 mm / min based on the laser scan speed. The yield stress size decreased with decreasing scan speed. Based on the laser scan spacing, as the value increases, the yield stress increases, but the variation is smaller than the other test criteria. The tendency of the tensile strength and elongation variation depending on the test conditions was difficult to understand.

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology is state-of-the-art additive manufacturing process technology that produces a three-dimensional structure by irradiating a laser on a fine metal powder to perform the fusion of a specific area and repeat this process. Owing to the characteristics of the additive manufacturing process, the melting phenomenon of the metal material by the laser has directionality depending on the process conditions, such as the irradiation direction of the laser and the build-up direction. For this reason, the composition of the metal material in the structure exhibits non-uniform characteristics. In this study, aluminum (AlSi10Mg) specimens were manufactured by applying SLM technology, and the material composition characteristics of the specimen were analyzed. The specimens were manufactured as cylinders by the build-up orientation of 0°, 45°, and 90°. The surface morphology of the specimen plane was analyzed optically. TEM analysis was performed on the core and the interface of the melting-pool inside the specimen generated by laser irradiation. The analysis results confirmed that there was a difference between the nano cell structure of the core and the interface of the melting-pool, and that the composition ratio of Si appeared higher at the interface than at the core of the cell.

Selective laser melting (SLM) manufactures an alloy using laser as a heat source, and has recently been introduced in the dental industry. However, there is a lack of analytical research on metal-ceramic restorations achieved by SLM. This study evaluates and compares the metal-ceramic bond strength of Co-Cr alloys produced by selective laser melting and casting methods. Co-Cr samples required for this study were produced through the sintering process of ceramics, by applying the SLM and CAST methods. The metal-ceramic bond strength was measured by applying the shear bond strength test. In order to determine the area fraction of adherent ceramic, Si content of the specimen was measured using scanning electron microscopy SEM/ EDS. Results of the metal-ceramic bond strength and AFAC were analyzed by t-test (α = 0.05). No significant difference was observed comparing the bond strength of SLM and CAST Co-Cr alloys (P> 0.05). However, the SLM group had much better ceramic adherence than the CAST group (P < 0.001). Moreover, oxidation characteristics were similar for both SLM and CAST Co-Cr alloys, but metal structures were different. These results imply that although the bond of ceramic and Co-Cr alloy is not related to the manufacturing method, SLM alloys impart better ceramic adherence. This indicates that alloys made with SLM can be used to fabricate upper implant prostheses in the future. In particular, it is expected to overcome the shortcomings of the CAST method, and save time and cost.
Selective laser melting (SLM) is emerged as a new manufacturing technique to directly fabricate precise parts using metallic materials. The final characteristics of a component fabricated through the SLM process are strongly dependent upon various parameters such as laser power, scan rate and pulse duration, etc. This paper, therefore, focuses on the dimensional characteristics of melted $20{\mu}m$ Fe-Cr-Ni powder by fiber laser for the selective laser melting process. With energy density decrease, the height and depth were decreased. Although the conditions are of the same energy density, the shape is different by laser power and scan rate. The shapes at various laser parameters were divided into 3 groups based on depth over height. The smooth regular shape is obtained under the conditions of $50{\mu}m$ of powder height and $15-20{\mu}s$ of pulse duration. And the laser power influenced the variation of shape more significantly than the scan rate.

Recently, metal additive manufacturing (AM) is being investigated as a new manufacturing technology. In metal AM, powder bed fusion (PBF) is a promising technology that can be used to manufacture small and complex metallic components by selectively fusing each powder layer using an energy source such as laser or an electron beam. PBF includes selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM). SLM uses high power-density laser to melt and fuse metal powders. EBM is similar to SLM but melts metals using an electron beam. When these processes are applied, the mechanical properties and microstructures change due to the many parameters involved. Therefore, this study is conducted to investigate the effects of the parameters on the mechanical properties and microstructures such that the processes can be performed more economically and efficiently.

Compared to conventional method, if metal framework of removable partial denture is fabricated by selective laser melting, various laboratory works are omitted, saving time and simplifying the process. In addition, metal framework with homogeneous density can be obtained, expecting excellent mechanical properties, especially resistance to fatigue fracture. In these cases, impression were taken using conventional methods in partial edentulous patients, master casts were fabricated and scanned to obtain digital data. After designing the metal frameworks on the scanned data, removable partial dentures were fabricated using selective laser melting methods. Through these procedure, satisfactory outcomes were achieved both in functional and esthetic aspects.
