  • A structural system reliability analysis is studied for the safety assessment of midship section. Probabilistically dominant collapse modes are generated by Element Replacement Method and Incrimental Load Method. In order to avoid generating the same modes repeatedly, it is branched at final plastic hinge. Using first and second order bound methods, system failure probability of midship section is computed and compared with deterministic load factor method to show the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • Flow field around the KRISO 3600TEU container ship is computed using a surface generated based on interpolations of station lines, which are given in a body plan of the ship, without using any CAD program. An interpolation method is suggested based on inscribed circles to generate curves between two neighboring station lines. The interpolated surface is saved in a STL format to use the snappyHexMesh utility of the openfoam. Computed resistance of the ship is compared with experimental and other computational results and the effects of the interpolation of neighboring station lines on the computed resistance are investigated. The suggested method is applied to calculate the flow field around a submarine with appendages. The surface triangulations for the hull and the appendages are generated without consideration of each other, then those surface triangulations are simply combined to provide a grid generator with the body boundary. The junctures of the hull and the appendages are identified automatically during the grid generation procedure. Tip vortex is captured, which travels downstream from the tip of the appendages.

  • Accurate estimation of shear flows in thin-walled beam section is the key issue to evaluate shear stress distribution of ship hull transverse section under the shear forces acting on hull girder. It is regarded that the method using the warping functions obtained by finite element formulation is the state of the art of this field. Recently, however, IACS took effect the new version of CSR in which direct calculation process of shear flow was suggested. In the direct calculation process, shear flow of ship hull section can be obtained by the addition of determinate and indeterminate shear flows calculated respectively. So, in this paper, the shear flow evaluation codes based on the process proposed by IACS CSR and warping function based method were developed respectively. The calculated results of shear flows for the several examples of ship sections were compared with each other and considered in detail.

  • The flow characteristics around KRISO 300K VLCC double-body model have been experimentally investigated in a closed-type subsonic wind tunnel. The local mean velocity and turbulence statistics including turbulent intensity. Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy were measured using a x-type hot-wire probe. The measurements were carried out at several transverse stations of the stern and near wake regions. The surface flow was visualized using on oil-film technique to see the flow pattern qualitatively. The flow in the stern and near wake region revealed complicated three-dimensional flow characteristics. The VLCC model shows a hook-shaped wake structure behind the propeller boss in the main longitudinal vortex region. The thin boundary layer at midship was increased gradually in thickness over the stern and evolved into a full three-dimensional turbulent wake.

  • An efficient preprocessor is developed for the finite element structural analysis of a ship's hull module. A hull module structure is divided into three groups for easy data handling : longitudinal members, transverse members, and transverse bulkheads. Based on the classification rules and design practices at shipyards, the preprocessor can create finite element nodes, elements, boundary conditions, and loadings automatically. By connecting the preprocessor with the ANSYS program, we can obtain the results of ship structureal analysis more efficiently. Applied to a typical double-hull oil tanker, the present preprocessor shows various advantages over conventional general-purpose preprocessors.

  • Ennin is a Japanese buddhist monk who traveled Tang from Jun. 13, 838 A D. to Dec. 14, 847 A D. in lunar's calender and wrote lengthy diary through the travel. This diary contained not only his wandering and triumphs but also politics, economy, social culture, religion, diplomatic policies, militaries, geography, transportations and administrations. Furthermore, the beginning of his diary dated Jun. 13, to July 3, 838 A. D. is recorded in the manner of ship's logbook entries. Many terms of navigation and naval architecture appears on it. It is very important to understand them for study ancient ship and its navigation skill. This Per aims to invest the meaning of “no-a” obviously refers to some part of hull of the ship upon first step to annotate the terms which are appeared in the diary.
