  • AIS(Automatic Identification System) is a radionavigation equipment for exchanging safety related information between ships as well as ship and shore station, introduced by SOLAS convention and widely used especially in vessel traffic service. The dynamic data of AIS is transmitted at intervals of 2 second to 3 minutes depending on ship's navigational status and speed. However, so often times it happens that some AIS data can not be received due to increasing AIS traffic and it's time slot confliction. In this paper, a revised reporting intervals of AIS dynamic data is proposed in order to decrease AIS data link load.

  • The current maritime data communications mainly depend on radio and satellite which have restrictions on data rate and cost. That leads to needs of novel relatively-high-speed data communication systems at sea just like on land. This paper proposes a routing protocol (MWR) for newly designed model of ship-to-ship communication networks at sea. The MWR protocol finds out an optimal route by selecting an optimal network for each specific application from overlapped networks of available wireless media at sea.

  • Ad Hoc Self-Organizing TDMA (ASO-TDMA) has been proposed as a specification to support the multi-hop data communication service for ships over VHF band. It allows for organizing a multi-hop ad-hoc network in a distributed manner by sharing the radio resources among the ships navigating along the route. In this paper, Markov chain analysis is given to provide the average throughput performance for ASO-TDMA protocol Furthermore, the analytical results are verified with computer simulation, which shows that there exists the optimal transmission rate to maximize the average throughput as the subframe size and the number of ships are varying in each hop region.

  • IoT (Internet of Things) is connected to all things Internet-based people and things, things and objects that communicate information between said intelligent technologies and services. Shipping each of a variety of devices that act independently from each other, but, it is actively interlock with each other is not easy practically days. Ship it within the means of communication, the communication between the ship, the communication between ship and shore configuration, SAN (Ship Area Network), RFID/USN, broadband communications, satellite communications and IT technology to a variety of marine environments for the safe navigation the ship's safety management system for the configuration you want to discuss the plan.

  • Additional frequencies are allocated in maritime digital data exchange to alleviate overload of the VHF data link. The shipborne ad-hoc network (SANET) for this frequencies was subsequently proposed, which provides various IP-based services to ships on behalf of satellite communications. In SANET, a ship should determine its own IP address to achieve IP connectivity to the shore. Accordingly, this paper proposes a SANET configuration (SANETconf) protocol as an IP configuration protocol. SANETconf propagates non-overlapping IP addresses across the network from the shore to ships. A ship obtains its IP address by exchanging Request and Response messages with its neighbors. Therefore, SANETconf eliminates the process of DAD and managing the movement of ships. Extensive simulations were performed to verify the applicability of SANETconf. Based on results, 85% of the ships can determine their own IP address within one frame. Also, SANETconf has a high resource efficiency by using 0.024 percent of resources for IP configuration.

  • Cyber attacks can be caused by all equipment that perform communication functions, and the link between ship and land due to the development of communication technology means that the ship sector as well as the land sector can be easily exposed to cyber threat vulnerability. In this paper, we analyze cyber threat trend changes to identify cyber security vulnerabilities in the maritime sector and propose measures to enhance cyber security through other industry case studies.

  • A marine environmental information system (MEIS) useful for optimal route planning of ships running in the ocean was developed. Utilizing the simulated marine environmental data produced by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts based on global environmental data observed by satellites, the real-time forecast and long-term statistics of marine environments around planned and probable ship routes are provided. The MEIS consists of a land-based data acquisition and analysis system(MEIS-Center) and a onboard information display system(MEIS-Ship) for graphic description of marine information and optimal route planning of ships. Also, it uses of satellite communication system for data transfer. The marine environmental components of winds, waves, air pressures and storms are provided, in which winds are described by speed and direction and waves are expressed in terms of height, direction and period for both of wind waves and swells. The real-time information is characterized by 0.5° resolution, 10 day forecast in 6 hour interval and daily update. The statistic information of monthly average and maximum value expected for a return period is featured by 1.5° resolution and based on 15 year database. The MEIS-Ship include an editing tool for route simulation and the forecasting and statistic information on planned routes can be displayed in graph or table. The MEIS enables for navigators to design an optimal navigational route that minimizes probable risk and operational cost.

  • As a method to come up with the low competence of responsible officers, an integrated system providing watch officers with information on navigation obtained on board and on land as well is needed to secure the safety of navigation. Therefore as an approach to improve the function for safe navigation, this paper is to develop, efficiently and economically, an integrated system of ship's information.
