  • A simple kinematic model for the prediction of ship manoeuvres based on trial data is proposed in this study. The model consists of first order differential equations in surge, sway, and yaw directions which simulate the time series of each velocity component. Actually instead of sea trial data, dynamic model simulations are conducted with randomly varied control inputs such as propeller revolution rates and rudder angles. Based on learning of control inputs and velocity outputs of dynamic model simulations in sufficient time, kinematic model coefficients are optimized so that the kinematic model can be approximately reproduce the velocity outputs of dynamic model simulations with arbitrary control inputs. The resultant kinematic model is verified with new dynamic simulation sets.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic simulation method for analysis of driving characteristics of aircraft and towing vehicles (TUG) on carrier vessel in wave motions. For prompt deployment in a short period of time, optimization of the movement of carrier aircraft becomes a major issue. In this regards, strategy studies using real-time simulation technology and optimal decision-making technologies are being conducted. In the present work, the dynamic characteristics of carrier aircraft and TUG connected by towbar or towbarless mechanism were investigated by means of multi-body dynamics model. Meanwhile, for real-time simulation, Dugoff's model of tire loads calculation was adopted. Through comparative analysis it was confirmed that the similarity of results between the multi-body contact model and the tire load calculation model can be achieved by coefficients tuning.

  • The present study concerns a feasibility study for applying principal component analysis to ship dynamics in maneuver. Using the four degrees of freedom standard modular model for ship dynamics maneuver simulations of large angle zigzag tests with rudder deflection angle variations are conducted. The datasets of ship motion, hydrodynamic force, and moment during the maneuver are acquired to identify the principal modes. The covariance matrix of obtained ship dynamics variables shows a strong linear correlation between the motion, hydrodynamic force, and moment, except the surge force. Four eigenvectors of the covariance matrix are selected as the principal modes of ship dynamics. Using the principal modes, ship motion in turning circle and zigzag tests is reconstructed, showing good agreement with the original data.

  • Hydrogen embrittlement in metals has been a serious issue with regard to structural safety. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the aggregation of hydrogen atoms at the crack tips suppresses the dislocation emission and thus results in cleavage fracture. A series of molecular dynamics simulations were performed considering factors such as the concentration of hydrogen atoms, loading rate, and diffusion coefficient. We investigated the conditions that minimize hydrogen embrittlement. The simulation results were consistent with the experimental results and used to quantify hydrogen embrittlement.

  • In this study, the Eulerian/Lagrangian one-way coupling method is proposed to predict flow noise due to Blade-Tip Vortex Cavitation (BTVC). The proposed method consists of four sequential steps: flow field simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques, reconstruction of wing-tip vortex using vortex model, generation of BTVC using bubble dynamics model and acoustic wave prediction using the acoustic analogy. Because the CFD prediction of tip vortex structure generally suffers from severe under-prediction of its strength along the steamwise direction due to the intrinsic numerical damping of CFD schemes and excessive turbulence intensity, the wing-tip vortex along the freestream direction is regenerated by using the vortex modeling. Then, the bubble dynamics model based on the Rayleigh-Plesset equation was employed to simulate the generation and variation of BTVC. Finally, the flow noise due to BTVC is predicted by modeling each of spherical bubbles as a monople source whose strength is proportional to the rate of time-variation of bubble volume. The validity of the proposed numerical methods is confirmed by comparing the predicted results with the measured data.

  • Ship stability prediction is very complex in reality. In this paper, risk based approach is applied to predict the probability of a certified ship, which is effected by the forces of sea especially the wave loading. Safety assessment and risk analysis process are also applied for the probabilistic prediction of ship stability. The survival probability of ships encountering with different waves at sea is calculated by the existed statistics data and risk based models. Finally, ship capsizing probability is calculated according to single degree of freedom(SDF) rolling differential equation and basin erosion theory of nonlinear dynamics. Calculation results show that the survival probabilities of ship excited by the forces of the seas, especially in the beam seas status, can be predicted by the risk based method.

  • A wire rope is comprised of several metal wires which are wound together like a helix and it can resist relatively large axial loads, as compared with bending and torsional loads. A shipbuilding crane for erection such as a floating crane, a gantry crane, and a crawler crane hoists up and down heavy blocks by using these wire ropes. Thus, it is necessary to find dynamic properties of a wire rope in order to safely lift the blocks using the crane. In this study, a formula for calculating the tension and torsional moment acting on wire ropes of the crane was derived based on the existing study, and then dynamic simulation of the crane was performed based on the formula. The result shows that the dynamic simulation can be applied to find the safe method for block erection of shipyards.

  • This paper considers the development of safety operation guideline for onboard A-Frame system used to operate heavy-work ROV using dynamic simulation. Onboard A-Frame is affected by ship's behavior and large inertia by the marine environment. For this reason, safety operation guidelines are required for the safety of workers who operate ship-mounted equipment. In order to develop a guideline, it is necessary to evaluate the safety loads through real sea experiment. However, simulation method is used instead since it is difficult to conduct experiments in sea. Therefore, a procedure for safety operation analysis based on dynamic simulation that can consider ship behavior and marine environment and a safety operation table were proposed in this study. And the construction of safety operation table and guide for safety operation using the applied load and safety factor analysis results were considered.
