The noise level of the navigation bridge as well as topside of the superstructure is dominated by the exhaust gas noise of the high-powered main engine and generator engine of special purpose vessels. In the case of the noise radiated from the top of the funnel. the exhaust pipe can be fitted with a silencer to reduce the propagated noise level. This paper is prepared based on an experimental performance test results of the silencers for generator-engine exhaust gas noise with consideration of air velocity. Two silencers were examined to check the performance of noise reduction in cases of air velocity 0m/s and 32m/s. In the sound reduction test, 400mm and 600mm diameter pipe ducts equipped with an axial fan were used as exhaust gas pipe system in the actual ship. The test procedure and results are presented in detail.

Connecting a synchronous generator to a power system is a dynamic process, requiring the coordinated operation of many components and systems. The goal is to connect the oncoming generator to the system smoothly i.e without causing any significant bumps, surges, or power swings, by closing the ACB when the oncoming generator matches the power system in voltage magnitude, phase angle, and frequency. If oncoming generator voltage is not matched to the power system voltage, reactive power will flow either into or out of the system at the instant of ACB closure. If this voltage difference is too great, the reactive power flow may result in high transient stresses that could damage the windings of the generator. Also, if oncoming generator frequency is not matched to the power system frequency, transient power will flow between generator and power system. If the frequency difference is too great, the transient power flow is reflected into the prime mover shaft, and this may result in excessive shaft or coupling stress. This paper tries to prove the necessity of correct synchronization for ship generators through a transient phenomenon analysis.
This paper presents the power control for the hybrid electric propulsion system. In this paper, the hybrid propulsion system consists cf the generator and battery as power supply system in ship. The hybrid control system is designed with energy saving algorithm for decreasing the power consumption of power supply system. This paper suggests the method to increase efficiency of hybrid electric propulsion system by developing battery charging system. The performance of power control system is analyzed with the experiment equipment for hybrid propulsion system, and the results showed a good property.

Most current ships have adopted on-board diesel generators to produce electricity, but the overall efficiency of equipment is down to about 50% due to thermal losses from operations such as exhaust gas, jacket water cooler, scavenge air cooler, etc. Recently, fuel cells have been highlighted as a promising technology to reduce the effect on the environment and have a higher efficiency. Therefore, this paper suggested a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)-gas turbine (GT) using waste heat from a SOFC and SOFC-GT-steam turbine (ST) with Rankine cycle. To compare both configurations, the fuel flow rate, current density, cell voltage, electrical power, and overall efficiency were evaluated at different operating loads. The overall efficiency of both SOFC hybrid systems was higher than the conventional system.
This study experimentally investigates the effect of dimensionality reduction of vibration signal on fault diagnosis of a marine engine. By using the principal component analysis, a vibration signal having the dimension of 513 is converted into a low-dimensional signal having the dimension of 1 to 15, and the variation in fault diagnosis accuracy according to the dimensionality change is observed. The vibration signal measured from a full-scale marine generator diesel engine is used, and the contribution of the dimension-reduced signal is quantitatively evaluated using two kinds of variable importance analysis algorithms which are the integrated gradients and the feature permutation methods. As a result of experimental data analysis, the accuracy of the fault diagnosis is shown to improve as the number of dimensions used increases, and when the dimension approaches 10, near-perfect fault classification accuracy is achieved. This shows that the dimension of the vibration signal can be considerably reduced without degrading fault diagnosis accuracy. In the variable importance analysis, the dimension-reduced principal components show higher contribution than the conventional statistical features, which supports the effectiveness of the dimension-reduced signals on fault diagnosis.

Recently, power converters installed on the specialized vessels such as LNG Carrier and Icebreaker and offshore plants mainly use diode rectifier. However, such devices cause distortion of supply voltage waveform by involving much harmonics to input current of non linearity load in rectifying operation. Distortion of supply voltage waveform can be problems such as false operation of generator, transformer and load device and deterioration of power quality. This thesis is focusing with a view to producing accurate sinusoidal AC waveform with certain load through improvement of distortion of current waveform causing under operation of rectifier by using accurate circuit of DC shaping. The result of computer simulation proved that harmonics involved in current and voltage waveform of power system can be reduced.

Recently, around the world, active development of new renewable energy sources including solar power, waves, and fuel cells, etc. has taken place. Particularly, floating offshore wind farms have been developed for saving costs through large scale production, using high-quality wind power and minimizing noise damage in the ocean area. The development of floating wind farms requires an evaluation of the Maritime Safety Audit Scheme under the Maritime Safety Act in Korea. Floating wind farms shall be assessed by applying the line and area concept for systematic development, management and utilization of specified sea water. The development of appropriate evaluation methods and standards is also required. In this study, proper standards for marine traffic surveys and assessments were established and a systemic treatment was studied for assessing marine spatial area. First, a marine traffic data collector using AIS or radar was designed to conduct marine traffic surveys. In addition, assessment methods were proposed such as historical tracks, traffic density and marine traffic pattern analysis applying the line and area concept. Marine traffic density can be evaluated by spatial and temporal means, with an adjusted grid-cell scale. Marine traffic pattern analysis was proposed for assessing ship movement patterns for transit or work in sea areas. Finally, conceptual design of a Marine Traffic and Safety Assessment Solution (MaTSAS) was competed that can be analyzed automatically to collect and assess the marine traffic data. It could be possible to minimize inaccurate estimation due to human errors such as data omission or misprints through automated and systematic collection, analysis and retrieval of marine traffic data. This study could provides reliable assessment results, reflecting the line and area concept, according to sea area usage.

Many studies have been conducted to reduce environmental pollution by ships and reduce fuel consumption. As part of this effort, research on power conversion systems through DC distribution systems that link renewable energy with conventional power grids has been pursued as well. The diode rectifiers currently used include many lower harmonics in the input current of the load and distort supply voltage to lower the power quality of the whole system. This distortion of voltage waveforms causes the malfunctions of generators, load devices and inverter pole switching elements, resulting in a large number of switching losses. In this paper, a controller is presented to improve DC output waveforms, the input Power Factor and the THD of an AFE type PWM rectifier used for PLL. DC output voltage waveforms have been improved, and the input Power Factor can now be matched to the unit power factor. In addition, the THD of the input power supply has been proven by simulation to comply with the requirements of IEEE Std514-2014.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is known as a very efficient method to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) and the catalyst performs reduction from nitrogen oxides (NOx) to nitrogen (N2) and water vapor (H2O). The catalyst, which is one of the factors determining the performance of the nitrogen oxide (NOx) ruduction method, is known to increase catalyst efficiency as cell density increases. In this study, the reduction characteristics of nitrogen oxides (NOx) under various engine loads investigated. A 100CPSI(60Cell) catalysts was studied through a laboratory-sized simulating device that can simulate the exhaust gas conditions from the power generation engine installed in the training ship SEGERO. The effect of 100CPSI(60Cell) cell density was compared with that of 25.8CPSI(30Cell) cell density that already had NOx reduction data from the SCR manufacturing. The experimental catalysts were honeycomb type and its compositions and materials of V2O5-WO3-TiO2 were retained, with only change on cell density. As a result, the NOx concentration reduction rate from 100CPSI(60Cell) catalyst was 88.5%, and IMO specific NOx emission was 0.99g/kwh satisfying the IMO Tier III NOx emission requirement. The NOx concentration reduction rate from 25.8CPSI(30Cell) was 78%, and IMO specific NOx emission was 2.00g/kwh. Comparing the NOx concentration reduction rate and emission of 100CPSI(60Cell) and 25.8CPSI(30Cell) catalysts, notably, the NOx concentration reduction rate of 100CPSI(60Cell) catalyst was 10.5% higher and its IMO specific NOx emission was about twice less than that of the 25.8CPSI(30Cell) catalysts. Therefore, an efficient NOx reduction effect can be expected by increasing the cell density of catalysts. In other words, effects to production cost reduction, efficient arrangement of engine room and cargo space can be estimated from the reduced catalyst volume.
