Investigation on Properties of Cement Mortar Using Heat Treated Flue Gas Desulfurization Gypsum (열처리된 배연탈황석고를 혼입한 시멘트 모르타르의 물성 연구)

  • Flue gas desulfurization gypsum is produced from emission process of fossil fuel power plant to remove sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) from exhaust gas. Production of flue gas desulfurization gypsum in Republic of Korea has been increasing due to the enforced regulations by government agency. Since flue gas desulfurization gypsum has characteristic that is similar to that of natural gypsum, there is a strong possibility for flue gas desulfurization gypsum to replace the role of natural gypsum. However, consumption of such material is still limited, only used for agricultural purposes or to make gypsum boards, it is necessary to expand the use of this material more aggressively. In this research, the chemical and mineralogical properties of flue gas desulfurization gypsum were investigated, and flue gas desulfurization gypsum with heat treatment was used to make cement paste. According to the results, it was found that flue gas desulfurization gypsum used in this experiment was a very high purity gypsum, and shown to have similar property to that of natural gypsum. Heat treating flue gas desulfurization gypsum above $100^{\circ}C$ was shown to bring beneficial effect on both compressive strength and drying shrinkage

Investigation of Catalytic Deactivation by Small Content Oxygen Contained in Regeneration Gas Influenced on DSRP (직접 황 회수 공정으로 유입되는 재생가스에 함유된 미량산소의 촉매활성저하 원인 규명)

  • In order to regenerate the sulfidated desulfurization sorbent, oxygen is used as the oxidant agent on the regeneration process. The small amount of oxygen un-reacted in regeneration process is flowed into direct sulfur recovery process. However, the reactivity for $SO_2$ reduction can be deteriorated with the un-reacted oxygen by various reasons. In this study, the deactivation effects of un-reacted oxygen contained in the off-gas of regeneration process flowed into direct sulfur recovery process of hot gas desulfurization system were investigated. Sn-Zr based catalysts were used as the catalyst for $SO_2$ reduction. The contents of $SO_2$ and $O_2$ contained in the regenerator off-gas used as the reactants were fixed to 5.0 vol% and 4.0 vol%, respectively. The catalytic activity tests with a Sn-Zr based catalyst were for $SO_2$ reduction performed at $300-450^{\circ}C$ and 1-20 atm. The un-reacted oxygen oxidized the elemental sulfur produced by $SO_2$ catalytic reduction and the conversion of $SO_2$ was reduced due to the production of $SO_2$. However, the temperature for the oxidation of elemental sulfur increased with increasing pressure in the catalytic reactor. Therefore, it was concluded that the decrease of reactivity at high pressure is occurred by catalytic deactivation, which is the re-oxidation of lattice oxygen vacancy in Sn-Zr based catalyst with the un-reacted oxygen on the catalysis by redox mechanism. Meanwhile the un-reacted oxygen oxidized CO supplied as the reducing agent and the temperature in the catalyst packed bed also increased due to the combustion of CO. It was concluded that the rapidly increasing temperature in the packed bed can induce the catalytic deactivation such as the sintering of active components.

  • The aim of this study is to produce cokes which can be used for the production of ferroalloy, for this purpose, domestic anthracite mixed with plastic was sintered at various condition. The combustion and physical properties of anthracite and plastic, coal separation, and the influence of factors on the strength of coke were investigated. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The three kinds of anthracite from the Samcheok region contained 25 to 30% ash of $100{\mu}m$ over size, and have the caloric value of 5,205 cal/g(TaeAn), 4,893 cal/g(JangSung), 4,873cal/g(KyongDong). 2. The recommendable conditions for heavy-fluid separation of the Samcheok coal are to set the specific gravity of heavy fluid to 2.4 and control the size of coal to $35{\sim}140mesh$. 3. It is concluded that phenolic resin powder, liquefied phenolic resin, SAN, and melamine resin can be used as a binder for the anthracite cokes, from the thermal analysis of various plastics. Especially, the liquefied phenolic resin was considered as the most suitable binder as it would simplify the process.

  • As the demand for eco-friendly energy increases to overcome the energy shortage and environmental pollution crisis, hydrogen economy has been proposed as a potential solution. Accordingly, an economical and efficient hydrogen production is considered to be an essential industrial process. Research on applying hydrogen separation membranes for H2/CO2 separation to the production of highly concentrated hydrogen by purifying H2 and capturing CO2 simultaneously from synthetic gas produced by gasification is in progress nowadays. In high temperature environments, the membrane separation process using glassy polymeric membrane with H2 selectivity has the potential for CO2 capture performance, and is an energy and cost effective system since polybenzimicazole (PBI)-based separators show excellent chemical and mechanical stability under high-temperature operation conditions. Thus, the development of high-performance PBI hydrogen separators has been rapidly progressing in recent years. This overview focuses on the recent developments of PBI-based membranes including structure modified, cross-linked, blended and carbonized membranes for applications to the industrial hydrogen separation process.

Characteristics of Heat Recovery Rate and Fouling according to Structures and Materials in Heat Exchangers (열교환장치의 구조 및 재질에 따른 열회수율과 파울링의 발생 특성)

  • We researched characteristics of heat recovery rate and fouling according to structures and materials in heat exchangers like water preheater and air preheater. Economizer and air preheater have used in thermal electric power plant. we made small incinerator and heat exchangers to carry out simulated experiment. We observed fouling formation and change of heat recovery rate, combusting powdered coal for 24 hr. In economizer, fin tube type had the largest amount of fouling formation, followed by tube line type > pipe type > auto washing type according to structures. As heat recovery rate, fin tube showed highest recovery rate, followed by auto washing type > pipe type > tube line type. In air preheater, fin tube type had the largest amount of fouling formation, followed by fin plate type > pipe type > pipe type coated by teflon > pipe type coated by ceramic according to structures. And then, heat recovery rate showed the same oder.

  • '공포의 값비싼 대가(The High Cost of Fear)'는 공개된 자료 중 동료 평가를 마친 최신의 자료와 간단한 계산 방법을 통해 한국의 탈원전 정책이 가져올 경제적, 환경적 영향을 분석한 보고서이다. 우리는 탈원전 정책이 다음과 같은 영향을 미칠 것으로 예측한다. ${\cdot}$천연가스 구매에만 최소 매년 100억 달러의 비용이 들 것이다. 이는 한국 평균임금인 연소득 29,125달러를 받는 일자리 343,000개에 해당하는 금액이다. ${\cdot}$비용의 대부분은 연료 수입에 사용될 것이며, 한국의 무역 수지가 악화될 것이다. ${\cdot}$한국의 부족한 재생에너지 자원을 고려할 때, 상당한 양의 화석 연료를 추가로 사용하게 될 것이다. ${\cdot}$LNG 발전소가 석탄 발전소를 대체하지 못하고 원자력발전소를 대체하면서 대기 오염으로 인한 조기 사망자 수가 증가할 것이다. ${\cdot}$한국의 전도유망한 원전 수출 산업이 아예 붕괴되거나 큰 타격을 입을 것이다. ${\cdot}$평균적 미국 자동차의 연간 주행거리를 기준으로 150만대에서 270만대의 미국 자동차가 배출하는 배기가스의 양만큼 연간 탄소 배출이 증가할 것이고, 한국은 파리기후협정에서 약속한 탄소 배출 감축 목표를 달성할 수 없게 된다. 본 보고서는 현재 계획된 탈원전 정책의 역사적 사회적 배경을 분석하여 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. ${\cdot}$'그린피스(Greenpeace)', '지구의 친구들(Friends for the Earth)' 등 막대한 자금 지원을 받는 해외 환경단체들은 탈원전 거짓 정보의 근원이며, 이들은 저렴하고 풍부한 에너지라는 개념을 반대한다. ${\cdot}$후쿠시마 원전 사고와 그 여파의 주된 원인은 일본 원자력산업계의 오만과 원자력에 대한 과장된 집단 공포이다. ${\cdot}$반핵 진영의 논리에는 산업계와 정부에 대한 불신과 원자력, 방사선에 대한 몰이해가 반영되어 있다. ${\cdot}$반핵 진영은 후쿠시마 사고를 2014년 한수원 납품 비리 사태의 심각성을 과장하는 데 사용하고 있다. 2014년의 비리 사태는 한국 원자력 규제기관의 독립성을 증명했으며, 2016년의 경주 지진은 2011년 후쿠시마에서 쓰나미와 노심 용융을 초래한 동일본 대지진의 1/350,000의 크기밖에 되지 않는다. 본 보고서는 한국과 타국가의 반핵 운동이 주는 교훈을 다음과 같이 정리하였다. ${\cdot}$어떠한 국가도 에너지 자원 최빈국인 프랑스나 한국 같은 국가조차도 탈원전 '전쟁'에서 자유롭지 않으며, 이는 전 세계적으로 원자력산업이 쇠퇴하는 원인이다. ${\cdot}$원자력산업계, 정부, IAEA 등은 한국과 세계 여러 국가에서- 문화적, 제도적, 재정적 원인으로 원자력산업의 보호와 확대라는 목표를 달성할 수 없다. ${\cdot}$원자력산업을 구하기 위해서는 새로운 비전과 새로운 제도, 그리고 새로운 리더십이 필요하다. ${\cdot}$원자력의 근원적이고 혁신적인 비전 원자력 인본주의(atomic humanism)에 대한 재조명이 필요하다. ${\cdot}$원자력을 지키고 대중과 소통하기 위해 과학 연구단체, 대학교, 사단법인, NGO 등의 새로운 기관들을 후원해야 한다. ${\cdot}$공포를 조장하는 반원전 세력에 맞서 공포를 극복해야 하고, 대중의 공포를 극복해왔던 다른 기술들의 사례에서 교훈을 얻어야 한다.

Vertical Distribution of PAHs Concentrations in the Aerosol (대기 연직별 에어로졸 내 PAHs 농도분포 특성)

  • Air samples were collected at various altitudes (from 165 to 1153 m) to observe vertical distribution of particulate PAHs concentrations using a very compact and light particle sampling package developed by Eun et al.(2013). TD-GC-MS developed by Hwang et al.(2014) was applied to PAHs analysis for effective analysis of PAHs contained trace amounts in the samples. The ranges of total PAHs concentrations were from 6.95 to $96.0ng\;m^{-3}$ on the ground and from 3.75 to $21.74ng\;m^{-3}$ at high altitude, respectively. All of particulate PAHs concentrations measured on the ground were higher than those measured at high altitude, while, the profile of individual PAH compounds between the ground and high altitude samples were similar. It means the distribution of particulate PAHs concentrations at high altitude were affected by the emission of PAHs emitted from ground.

  • Emission of heavy metals as hazardous air pollutants has been focused with tightening regulatory limits due to their hazardousness. Measurements and characteristic investigations of heavy metals emitted from a commercial power plant burning anthracite coal have been carried out. The plant consists of a circulating fluidized bed combustor, a cyclone, a boiler and an electrostatic precipitator(ESP) in series. Dust and gaseous samples were collected to measure main heavy metals including gaseous mercury before ESP and at stack. Dust emissions as total particulate matter (TPM), PM-10 and PM-2.5 at inlet of ESP were very high with 23,274, 9,555 and $7,790mg/Sm^3$, respectively, as expected, which is much higher than those from pulverized coal power plants. However TPM at stack was less than $0.16mg/Sm^3$, due to high dust removal efficiency by ESP. Similarly heavy metals emission showed high collection efficiency across ESP. From particle size distribution and metal enrichment in sizes, several metal concentrations could be correlated with particle size showing more enrichment in smaller particles. Mercury unlike other solid metals behaved differently by emitting as gaseous state due to high volatility. Removal of mercury was quite less than other metals due to it's volatility, which was 68% only. Across ESP, speciation change of mercury from elemental to oxidized was clearly shown so that elemental mercury was half of total mercury at stack unlike other coal power plants which equipped wet a scrubber.

  • Low-temperature carbon dioxide stripping by a vacuum membrane stripping technology was studied as a substitute for the stripping process in a conventional aqueous amine process. Composite membranes with $5{\mu}m$ thickness of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) dense layer on a PE (polyethylene) support layer were prepared by a casting method and used as a membrane contactor for $CO_2$ stripping. Aqueous amine solutions of 30 wt% MEA (monoethanolamine) were used as absorbents. $CO_2$ flux was examined under various operating conditions by varying the vacuum pressure (60~360 mmHg (abs.)), stripping temperature ($25{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), $CO_2$ loading (0.5~0.7). $CO_2$ stripping flux increased with increasing temperature and $CO_2$ loading as well as decreasing vacuum pressure. PDMS-PE composite membrane has stability for vacuum stripping process compared with PTFE porous membrane.

  • The GTL(Gas to Liquids) technology, manufacturing synthesized oil from natural gas, had been developed about 1920 for the military purpose by Fischer and Tropsch, German scientists. And 1960, Sasol company had started commercializing the FT(Fischer-Tropsch) synthesis technology, for the transport fuel in South Africa. Until a recent date, the commercialization of GTL technology had been delayed by low oil price. But concern about depletion of petroleum resources, and development in synthesizing technology lead to spotlight on the GTL businesses. Especially, Qatar, which has rich natural gas fields, aims at utilizing natural gas like conventional oil resources. Therefore, around this nation, GTL plants construction has been promoted. There are mainly 3 processes to make GTL products(Diesel, Naphtha, lube oil, etc) from natural gas. The first is synthesis gas generation unit reforming hydrogen and carbomonoxide from natural gas. The second is FT synthesis unit converting synthesized gas to polymeric chain-hydrocarbon. The third is product upgrading unit making oil products from the FT synthesized oil. There are quite a little sulfur, nitrogen, and aromatic compounds in GTL products. GTL product has environmental premium in discharging less harmful particles than refinery oil products from crude to the human body. In short, the GTL is a clean technology, easier transportation mean, and has higher stability comparing to LNG works.
