How to Measure Daytime Population in Urban Streets?: Case of Seoul Pedestrian Flow Survey (도시 거리의 주간활동인구 측정과 해석: 서울시 유동인구 조사 사례)

  • It is increasingly important to estimate daytime population for the sake of urban administration and urban economy. The estimation of daytime population using a census data on commute, however, has its own limits, particularly when applying to the metropolis such as Seoul which is dominated by the service industry. This study suggests a pedestrian flow as another estimate of daytime population and presents a methodology of Seoul Pedestrian Flow Survey. The data of pedestrian flow gives us a view into hourly and spatial distribution of daytime population, which cannot be provided by the use of census data. In addition, comparing with a census-based daytime population on the borough level show some features of a pedestrian flow as another estimate of daytime population.

Analyzing Pedestrian Characteristics Using the Seoul Floating Population Survey: Focusing on 5 Urban Communities in Seoul (서울시 유동인구조사자료를 활용한 보행특성 분석: 서울시 5개 생활권역을 중심으로)

  • This paper analyzes and compares the pedestrian characteristics of 5 urban communities with 2012 Seoul floating population survey data. First of all, differences in total pedestrian volumes and time distribution of the volumes are compared across the 5 urban communities and the effects of pedestrian road properties are investigated. Then, we conduct a regression analysis to find factors influencing pedestrian volume according to the type of urban community and day of week. As results, the urban community had the greatest volume and the volume increased significantly at lunch time. Center bus lane, bus stop, and crosswalk lead to more trips in the urban community, while opposite patterns occurred in the other communities. Less slopes and commercial region areas caused more trips in all communities. Regression analysis results showed that a variety of variables including demographic indices, land use type and pedestrian road properties differently affect pedestrian volumes in individual urban communities. The research can be used as basic data to establish polices for pedestrian environment improvement.

  • The paper analyzes factors to affect pedestrian volumes by land-use type using 2012 Seoul Pedestrian Survey. First of all, five groups were classified based on land-use types around survey points such as residential, commercial, industrial and green uses, using k-average cluster analysis. Then, differences in average pedestrian volumes by group were compared for a day and time of day. In addition, multiple regression analysis was employed to identify factors to affect pedestrian volumes, considering physical features, land use types, public transportation accessibility, and socio-economic indices as independent variables by spatial hierarchy. Model results show that the walkway width positively influenced on pedestrian volumes for all groups, whereas other variables differently affected by group. Our results can be used as basic data for establishing polices with respect to pedestrian road design and improvement as well as estimating pedestrian demand by land-use type.

Geographically Weighted Regression on the Characteristics of Land Use and Spatial Patterns of Floating Population in Seoul City (서울시 유동인구 분포의 공간 패턴과 토지이용 특성에 관한 지리가중 회귀분석)

  • The key objective of this research is to review the effectiveness of spatial regression to identify the influencing factors of spatial distribution patterns of floating population. To this end, global and local spatial autocorrelation test were performed using seoul floating population survey(2014) data. The result of Moran's I and Getis-Ord $Gi^*$ as used in the analysis derived spatial heterogeneity and spatial similarities of floating population patterns in a statistically significant range. Accordingly, Geographically Weighted Regression was applied to identify the relationship between land use attributes and population floating. Urbanization area, green tract of land of micro land cover data were aggregated in to $400m{\times}400m$ grid boundary of Seoul. Additionally public transportation variables such as intersection density transit accessibility, road density and pedestrian passage density were adopted as transit environmental factors. As a result, the GWR model derived more improved results than Ordinary Least Square(OLS) regression model. Furthermore, the spatial variation of applied local effect of independent variables for the floating population distributions.

  • The floating population that is index to figure out dynamic activities in urban area will be important in urban railway planning, but it is not useful because it is collected by posterior method. This study aims to investigate factors influencing floating population. The floating population data that was collected in Seoul for a month in December 2013 is used as dependent variable, and the negative binomial regression analysis is used in modelling. The number of households, number of employees, number of subway stations, and number of bus lines variables are statistically significant in predicting floating population.

  • The ATVM(Automatic Ticket Vending Machine) of Seoul Metropolitan is a Kiosk which is called Ticket Vending and Reload Device at the subway station. It is implemented for integrating transportation card system which is separated from a paper subway ticket and replacing ticket selling employees. However, since the automatic ticket vending machine was accepted in 2009, there has been confusion of purchasing a ticket. Therefore, it requires improvement of usability. This study, conducts a literature search. Also, the interface of ATVM is analyzed. Finally user observation proceeded at Sinnonhyeon Station of Seoul Metro line 9. The results show that selecting a destination and section fares is confusing process for user. Based on this survey the improvements of UI are proposed to expect advanced directions of the ATVM.

Spatial Information Application Case for Appropriate Location Assessment of PM10 Observation Network in Seoul City (서울시 미세먼지 관측망 위치 적정성 평가를 위한 공간정보 활용방안)

  • Recently, PM10 is becoming a main issue in Korea because it causes a variety of diseases, such as respiratory and ophthalmologic diseases. This research studied to spatial information application cases for evaluating the feasibility of the location for PM10 observation stations utilizing Geogrphic Information System(GIS) spatial analysis. The spatial Information application cases for optimal location assessment were investigated to properly manage PM10 observation stations which are closely related with public spatial data and health care. There are 31 PM10 observation stations in Seoul city and the observed PM10 data at these stations were utilized to understand the overall assessment of PM10 stations to properly manage using interpolation methods. The estimated PM10 using Inverse Distance Weighted(IDW) and Kriging techniques and the map of PM10 concentrations of monitoring stations in Seoul city were compared with public spatial data such as precipitation, floating population, elementary school location. On the basis of yearly, seasonal and daily PM10 concentrations were used to evaluate the feasibility analysis and the location of current PM10 monitoring stations. The estimated PM10 concentrations were compared with floating population and calculated 2015 PM10 distribution data using zonal statistical methods. The national spatial data could be used to analyze the PM10 pollution distribution and additional determination of PM10 monitoring sites. It is further suggested that the spatial evaluation of national spatial data can be used to determine new location of PM10 monitoring stations.

A Study on Enhancement Methods of Level of Service Analysis for Pedestrian Sidewalks (보행자도로 서비스 수준 분석방법 개선 연구)

  • Currently, level of service(LOS) analysis methods for pedestrian sidewalks are provided in Korean Highway Capacity Manual(KHCM, 2013). However, conventional methods provided in the KHCM produce most of pedestrian sidewalks' LOS as level A, indicating that existing analysis methods are unable to reflect realistic pedestrian sidewalks' LOS. The objectives of this research are to identify the suitability of current LOS criteria and to propose improved LOS evaluation criteria and methods with pedestrian volume data carried out for 10,000 sites in 2009. This research proposes new criteria by using the qualitative definition of LOS proposed by Fruin and Hall, new standard Korean human scale and new criteria of pedestrian occupancy space. Application results of new criteria show that more realistic results can be achieved than the existing methods. It is expected that applying the newly developed criteria and methods can make planning, design and construction of pedestrian sidewalks more realistic and various.

The Effect of the Urban and Architectural Form Factors on Pedestrian Volume (미시공간에서 도시·건축형태요소가 보행량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the correlation between microscopic factors and pedestrian volume in an urban environment, focusing on the microscopic factors that stimulate the pedestrian volume, such as density, diversity, network structure, accessibility, and the form of lots and buildings. In particular, factors already known to boost the pedestrian volume include density, diversity and accessibility, which are three variables strongly related to the concept of the 3Ds (Density, Diversity, Design) proposed by Cervero and Kockelman (1997) and the additional 2Ds (Distance to Transit, Destination Accessibility) suggested by Ewing et al. (2008). The analysis in this study was based on the 2010 survey of the floating population in Seoul, particularly on the data from Jongro-gu and Jung-gu in Gangbuk area. Data were established by analyzing the microscopic factors within a 500m radius around each of the 1,028 spots from which the pedestrian volume in Jongro-gu and Jung-gu was measured. The analysis showed that density, diversity and accessibility, three factors that were already known to be effective in increasing pedestrian volume, also have the same effect in Jongro-gu and Jung-gu.
