  • On the background of general idea and technique of bioscience, medicine and engineering, tissue engineering aim at maintenance, improvement and repair of human body function through manufacturing and transplantation of artificial tissue and organ exchangeable human body. Basic material used in the area is scaffold that aid tissue and organ formation. Making scaffold, solvent-casting and particulate leaching technique is widely used in manufacturing of porous polymer scaffold. There are many types of particle including salt and gelatin. Salt is a most commonly used particulate because it is easily available and very easy to handle and gelatin particle is another candidate for this method because it is known as a material, which enhances cell attachment and proliferation. But there is no comparative study of two kinds of materials. In this study we compared the biocompatibility of the two scaffolds made from salt(salt scaffold) and gelatin particle (gelatin scaffold). These results demonstrated that gelatin scaffold showed better attachment of cells at the initial stage and better proliferation of cells. The better performance of gelatin scaffold is contributed to the better connection of pores in the same porosity.

  • In order to use a low cost polymer valve in our total artificial heart and ventricular assist device, we have developed a slit-type bileaflet polymer valve[BPV 1. The aim of this study is to determine the hydrodynamic effectiveness of the newly-designed BPV and its feasibility for temporary use in the blood pumps. For hydrodynamic comparison, we investigated in-vitro the pressure drop across the valve, the leakage volume, the flow rate and the flow pattern of the BPV, two mechanical valves and a trileaflet polymer valve. We employed the ventriculo-pulmonary bypassing method for in-vivo tests of the BPV's together vilh our electrohydraulic left venIn ricular assist device in mongrel dogs. The BPV showed adquate gydrodynamic performances and in the preliminary animal bests, there was no xvi dence of thrombus formation on the valve leaflets and around the struts. Detailed results obtained from the animal tests will be separately reported. This report involves the design criteria, fabrication and hydrodynamic charateristics of she BPV, and the basic merits and demerits of the valve are dis- cussed from the hydrodynamic point of view.

  • The objective of this paper is to suggest a nonlinear analysis process to predict the structural behavior and strength of composite basement wall member combined with H-Pile. Therefore, the structural behavior of composite basement wall is studied and the special nonlinear characteristics of each elements such as H-Pile, concrete wall, and shear connectors are idealized using ATENA program. Finally, the result is compared with previous test result. Research result shows that there is a good co-relation between analysis and test results even if analysis result has little bit higher initial stiffness than test result. It can be concluded that the nonlinear behavior of composite basement wall is suitably predicted by using the contact element model in ATENA program as shear connector element.

  • Four RC shear wall specimens with a/d of 2.2 are designed. And a flexural retrofitting is performed for one specimen by both enlarging wall section and adding additional vertical reinforcements. Also the effectivity of jaketting wall sides is evaluated for the two methods using only steel plate or welded wire mesh with enlargement of section. Cyclic loads are applied to the retrofitted specimens according to the loading history proposed by ACI under constant axial force. Test result showed that the strength and ductility of specimen were improved where the section was enlarged after the installation of additional vertical reinforcements. Confining the ends of wall by U shape W.W.F. with enlargement of section showed most excellent structural capacity regarding to the strength and ductility. Retrofitting by using steel plate was much effective not only to protect the abrupt decrease of strength after yield but also to improve the deformation capacity.

  • Multipurpose Floor Level Joint(MFLJ) is a new construction technology system which was developed in domestic. By using this system, it is possible not only to absorb the deformation at expansion joint due to shrinkages of concrete but also to make ease the floor leveling during the concrete casting at floor. The system consists of two elements, supporting devices and rails. Their structural capacities were verified through several experimental programs, such as compressive strength test of support and bending test of rail. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the deformation absorbing capacity of the floor level joint. An experimental work was carried out to simulate the deformation condition at the joint and the test result was analyzed and evaluated. In addition, FEM analysis for expansion joint of typical building was also performed to predict the real behavior of MFLJ. The test results showed that MFLJ has sufficient deformation capacity required to act as expansion joint.

  • The purpose of this research was to find out what is the dominant factor determining the $H_{ex}$ and the $H_C$ of Mn-Ir/Ni-Fe multilayers with different buffer layers. Regardless of (111) texture of Mn-Ir layer, all samples showed over the $H_{ex}$ of 155 Oe. We found out the $H_{ex}$ and the $H_C$ of Mn-Ir/Ni-Fe multilayers depend on interface morphology and grain size of Mn-Ir layer at the interface between Mn-Ir and Ni-Fe layers. The dependence of magnetroesistance ratio and coupling field on the thickness of ferromagnetic layer, thickness of Cu layer and different buffer layers have been studied. Maximum magnetoresistance ratio appeared for the sample Ta(5 nm)/Mn-Ir(10 nm)/Ni-Fe(7.5 nm)/Cu(2 nm)/Ni-Fe(6 nm)/Ta(5 nm)/Si. Magnetoresistance ratio may be related to grain of ferromagnetic layer. Coupling field may be related to the roughness and the grain size of ferromagnetic layer in the spin-valve multilayers.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of composite basement wall in which H-pile and reinforced concrete wall are combined using shear connector Twelve specimens are tested to evaluate the shear capacity of the wall. Main variables in the test are composite ratio, distribution of shear connector, thickness of wall, shear-span ratio, and shear reinforcement. Test results indicate that the shear capacity of test specimens varies with the foregoing variables except the composite ratio. The results are compared with strengths predicted using the equations of ACI 318-99, Zsutty, and Bazant. Based on this investigation, a method for predicting the shear strength of composite basement walls is proposed.

  • In recent years, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been widely used for repairing and/or strengthening structural elements in concrete. Not enough test data, however, are available to predict the long-term performance of the repaired and improved structures exposed to weathering. The objective of this research is to study the effect of freeze-thaw cycling on the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in shear with carbon fiber sheet. Six small-scale RC beams (100mm${\times]$100mm${\times]$400mm) were strengthened with CFRP in shear, subjected to up to 400 cycles freeze-thawing from -17${\sim}4^{\circ}C$, and tested to failure in four-point bending. Test result, there was no significant damage to carbon fiber sheet strengthened concrete beams had been suffered 30 cycles of freeze-thawing, and more over 60 cycles of freezing-thawing brought about a reduction in resistance of only 25% of the initial level.

  • Objective: This study was designed to compare construction types and seasonal radon concentrations in dwellings in Jeollabuk-do Province in Korea. Methods: The measurement of indoor radon concentrations in 79 dwellings using alpha-track detectors was performed every three months (seasonally) over one year between 2015 and 2016. Also, Radon concentrations in soil were measured in spring to investigate the correlations between the concentrations in soil and indoor air. Results: The annual average concentration of indoor radon for dwellings was 89.7±72.1(GM: 72.4) Bq/㎥, with a range (min-max) of 17.2 to 505.4 Bq/㎥. The highest indoor radon concentration was measured in winter and the lowest was shown in summer. The geometric mean of radon concentration in winter was 1.03-2.58 times higher than other seasons. Radon concentrations in soil were investigated at the depth of 1 m, and the concentrations ranged from 1,780 Bq/㎥ to 123,264 Bq/㎥. This showed low correlations with indoor radon concentrations.
