  • A fundamental study on methane conversion for the collection organic wastes of agriculture, forestry and fishers was performed in a laboratory scale. As a result, selected Run B sample were obtained 18.41 C/N Ratio and 168.96 mg/L TCOD; Under the biochemical methane potential test, theoretical and actual methane generation was 313.6 mg/L VS added and 234.2 mg/L VS added, respectively; However, methane conversion from Run B were occurred 74% by anaerobic digestion. By the first order reaction kinetics, kinetic constant were $0.2476d^{-1}$ for Run B. Three steps fill-up filter reactor was evaluated methane content 16% up to promote than blank reactor; TCOD and SCOD have reduced 44.7% and 44.2%, respectively.

  • To obtain basic design criteria for underground anaerobic digestion and enhance biogas production from swine slurry, a $20m^3$ underground anaerobic digester (UGAD) was constructed and operated at mesophilic ($31{\sim}37^{\circ}C$) temperature with an organic loading rate (OLR) at $23.6kgVS/m^3/day$. The average biogas and $CH_4$ production rate were observed at 8.62 and $5.78m^3/day$, respectively. The mean percentile of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ were also observed at 67.5% and 19.6%. The relative biogas yield was explored at $733L/kg\;VS_{added}$ and $CH_4$ yield was at $495L/kg\;VS_{added}$ respectively. The removal rate of biochemical constituents and pathogens were noticed considerably at 68%, 74%, 79%, 86%, 89%, 81%, 55%, 79%, 98% and 100% on TS, VS, TSS, $BOD_5$, $TCOD_{cr}$, $SCOD_{cr}$, $NH_3-N$, available P, fecal coliforms and Salmonella, respectively. This study suggested that, the modified UGAD system is a greatly desirable for anaerobic digestion for swine slurry with regards to high methane yield and biodegradability.

  • Strain BCNU 2001 was isolated from soil samples collected from Tea-baek Mountain area. The biochemical characteristics and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences of the isolate revealed that the strain belonged to the Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The supernatants had an antimicrobial effect on various kind of bacteria and fungi. Especially BCNU 2001 was able to greatly inhibit the growth of Micrococcus luteus, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, and Aspergillus niger, and its inhibition zone was measured as 18.5 mm against Micrococcus luteus, 19.0mm against Proteus mirabilis, 17.0mm against Proteus vulgaris, and 13.5 mm against Aspergillus niger, respectively. Hexane and dichloromethane extracts of BCNU 2001 exhibited significant activity against bacteria, and dichloromethane and ethylacetate extracts showed significant activity against fungi. Pseudomonas strain BCNU 2001 was also determined to have antimicrobial peptide against various microorganisms including Gram positive bacteria, Gram negative bacteria and fungi. The obtained results may provide preliminary support for the usefulness of Pseudomonas strain BCNU 2001.
