  • Recently demands for marine development are increasing due to limitation of land-based resources, occurrence of the demands for the new materials and the increase of marine transportation among nations. Development activities in marine area give rise to external dis-economic effects to marine species and their habitats. Marine Spatial Planning(MSP) is a system devised to seek sustainable use of marine ecosystem, and to overcome conflicts between conservation and development This paper 1) analysed the effects of MSP in three aspects: economic, ecological and political effects, 2) explained reasons why MSP is necessary in the Korean marine policy and 3) suggested the prerequisites for successful adaptation of MSP in Korea.

  • This study is aimed to build an effective information management system for natural ecosystem in local Kang-wha area. We analyze the management strategies for the information related to environment ecosystem and natural ecosystem. A prototype is applied to equip search functions for related-agency information, natural environmental information, spatial information, and ecosystem information. It is also capable of editing the information for related-agency information and natural environmental information. Developed various for future study, a prototype of natural eco-information management system will be operated, which discovers and selves potential problems. It is, in turn, utilited for environmental management system of water quality, air quality and waste management. As the final goal, it is expected to build a total environment information management system by integrating those different environmental information systems.

  • Human beings at the beginning of the world have tried to gain mental and physical satisfaction from nature. However, as it became difficult to find such satisfaction in nature, an advanced civilization was created that confronted nature by developing a unique environment. In this process of confrontation, an ecological crisis occurred. As an alternative to solve this problem, there began interest in the ecological paradigm of many fields, and the domain of space design for living became the center of attention. Korean traditional architecture has ecological characteristics suitable for Koreas nature and climate. When discussing Korean traditional architecture from the viewpoint of an ecological paradigm, studies have been based on the understanding that it is the entire combination of structures existing with and as a part of a natural ecosystem rather than the use of independent and individual structures like that of Western architecture. In particular, Korean traditional windows and doors are examples of maintaining an ecological essence by accepting natural surroundings and have important meaning in the subject of ecological space design, but its unfortunate that theyre not utilized in contemporary Korean architecture. Focusing on these discrepancies, this study aims to make traditional windows and doors native to Korea the subject of discussion and to expand the area of study in Korean traditional architecture.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate landscape characteristics of watersheds in the Nakdong River Basin for identifying the groups of watershed with similar landcover patterns by using Geographic Information System and statistical technique. According to the results based on the cluster analysis using cluster analysis tool in the ArcGIS 8.3 program, 22 sub-watersheds were classified into three types; "Forest watershed", "Agriculture watershed", and "Urban watershed". In the forest watershed that has the least potential of ecological disturbances by human, a forest management approach based on geographic conditions and coverage types, etc., should be developed to sustain the ecological and environmental functions of forest. For the agriculture watershed, environmental-friendly agricultural techniques should be performed in the particular enhancement of riparian buffer zone to the prevent direct inflow of soils, fertilizers, and other chemicals into the stream network. Finally, in the urban watershed, an environmental-friendly plan that may increase the ratio of pervious surface and amount of green-space to should be reserved.

  • Based on the characteristics of cultural expressions, this paper compares and analyzes the cases of representative commercial architectural spaces of six largest cities in China. In order to promoting the sustainable development of the indoor space culture of modern commercial buildings in China.Six cases were analyzed from the viewpoints of cultural tradition, locality, popularity, technology, and ecology. The results are as follows. First, the tradition of culture requires the emphasis on the traditional elements of specific areas in the interior space of commercial architecture.Second, the regional character of culture is closely related to the social and natural environment factors such as the economic development of the interior space of commercial architecture, historical intrinsic space, geographical environmental conditions, and climate.Fourth, the technicality of culture is to integrate construction method, structure form, and material with local culture into commercial architecture interior space.Fifth, cultural ecology places attention to placing plants in the interior space of commercial architecture and creating a healthy, pleasant and safe environment.

  • The ordinary least square (OLS) regression model is assumed that the relationship between distribution of longevity population and environmental factors to be identical. Therefore, the OLS regression analysis can't explain sufficiently the spatial characteristics of longevity phenomenon and related variables. The geographically weighted regression (GWR) model can be representing the spatial relationship of adjacent area using geographically weighted function. It also characterized which can locally explain the spatial variation of distribution of longevity population by environmental characteristics. From this point of view, this study was performed the comparative analysis between OLS and GWR model for ecological factors of longevity existing studies. In the results, GWR model has higher corresponded to model than OLS model and can be accounting for spatial variability about effect of specific environmental variables.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand and develop various environmental designs to play a key roles in urban design, so that public green spaces remain vital with future changes. Variability in space, ecology, and society were analyzed based on research of variable environmental spaces in 11 selected studies conducted locally and abroad since the 2010s. Moreover, landscape characteristics, design methods, and design strategies were analyzed accordingly for each case. The results of the study showed that variability in landscapes provided various possibilities for spatial change and satisfied people's functional needs for spatial use. In addition, variable environmental design greatly compensated for the defects by solving the issues associated with fixed landscapes by increasing the flexibility of use and adaptability to the environment. This study showed that variable design is applicable to public green spaces; environmental stress; and variability in architecture, the environment, and landscaping, and it contributes to enhancing the sustainability and resilience of the environment.
