This study was conducted to determine the effects of alternating planting systems of soybean and tillering hybrid corn on yield of both crops. The planting systems included monocultures of both crops. 1 to 1 row ratio, 1 to 2 row ratio, 1 to 3 row ratio, 2 to 1 row ratio, 2 to 3 row ratio, 3 to 1 row ratio, 3 to 2 row ratio and 3 to 3 row ratio of soybean and corn. The results obtained are summarized as follows : The plant height of soybean was increased as the number of planting rows of corn increased. But the plant, height of soybean was quite stabilized when the ratio of soybean planting rows increased. When the plant height of soybean was increased due to the increased row number of corn, the branch number and diameter of soybean decreased and lodging ratio increased. Total fresh weight of soybean per 10a was decreased as the ratio of soybean planting decreased and it was increased when the ratio of soybean planting increased over monoculture of soybean. Dry weight of soybean per 10a showed the same tendency of the fresh weight. But the highest grain yield of soybean was obtained in the monoculture of soybean and it was 276 kg/10a. Comparatively high yield of soybean was obtained in the systems of 2 to 1 and 3 to 3 ratios. The plant height, number of tillers and number of ears per plant of tillering corn were greatly affected by the alternating planting of soybean and they were 208.9cm, 2.1 and 4 per plant, respectively. The fresh and dry weights and yield of corn per 10a showed significant differences among systems. The average fresh and dry weight of corn in the systems of 3 to 1 and 2 to 1 were 1000 kg and 100 kg higher than those of monoculture of corn. The kernel yields of corn per 10a were 438 kg in the monoculture system and 530 kg in the systems of 3 to 2 and 2 to 1. The total fresh weights of corn and soybean in systems of 3 to 1, 3 to 2 and 2 to 1 were higher than 5721 kg of soybean and 4358 kg of corn in the monoculture. Combined dry weight was high in the order of monoculture, 2 to 1 and 3 to 1 row ratios. Combined grain yield was high in the systems of 2 to 1 and 3 to 1 row ratios and it was over 430 kg per 10a.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of concentration of NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ , $K^{+}$ and $Ca^{++}$ in nutrient solution on the seedlings growth of ‘Mudeungsan’watermelon. Seeds were sown on March 16, 1997. NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ , $K^{+}$ and $Ca^{++}$ was treated with three different levels, respectively, NO$_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ = 106, 206, 406ppm; $K^{+}$ = 150, 200, 400 ppm; $Ca^{++}$ = 150, 200, 400 ppm. Plant growth was investigated at four-days interval in 10 days after treatment. Increasing N concentration in the nutrient solution increased the plant height, leaf area, number of leaves, fresh and dry weight of shoot while high concentration of K and Ca in the nutrient solution decreased the seedling growth in terms of leaf area, leaf dry weight. The uptake of N, K and Mg in petiole sap was positively affected by the adding of 206 ppm of nitrate, 150 ppm of potassium and 200 ppm of calcium levels, respectively. The P and Ca uptake in petiole sap was not affected by the N and K concentrations in the nutrient solution while K concentration above 200 ppm decreased the N and Mg content in petiole sap. High concentration of Ca in the nutrient solution increased the Ca content in petiole sap while Ca concentration above 200 ppm decreased the N content.
To obtain the basic information about the translocation of seed reserves of soybean[Glycine max(L.) Merrill] cultivars, 'Hill', 'Paldalkong' and 'Jangyeobkong' , the dry matter changes of emerging organs during the germination and seedling development were observed at the research farm of College of Natural Resources, Korea University, on May 26, June 5 and June 14. Mean fresh weight, dry weight and moisture content of three soybean cultivars were increased until the V2 stage in all seedling parts except cotyledons. Cotyledon dry weight was continuously decreased and the decreased amount at the V2 stage was about 80% of the cotyledon dry weight at the germination stage. Structural component of cotyledons was 22.2% of the cotyledon dry weight at the germination stage. Metabolic components of cotyledons were markedly decreased until V2 stage, and about 91% of cotyledon metabolic components at germination stage was utilized. However, those of whole seedling were increased after the V1 stage. Therefore, it appeared that role of cotyledons as nutrient supplier for germination and seedling growth was important until the V1 stage especially.
This study was carried out to find the botanical characters and effect of weed control for herbicides treatment after barley sowing. Barley variety used in study was "Yuyeon", hood-type awn for whole crop forage use, which developed at RDA in 2004. Sowing date was on 10th October, 2007, and was drilled as $60{\times}20cm$. Herbicides were treated on 2th day after barley sowing. Measured items were number and kinds of weeds at each treatment and growth characteristics and grain yield in barley. Cerastium holosteoides var. hallaisanense among weeds surveyed at tillering stages in Butachlor treatment were highly appeared, but Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis did not appeared while Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis was 39 plants and Capeslla bursa-pastoris was 37 plants in check. Occurrence of the Capeslla bursa-pastoris at primary survey and Cerastium holosteoides var. hallaisanense in ripening stage were high, while Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis did not emerged. Botanical characteristics of barley each as plant height, number of tillers and spiklets per plant. surveyed at ripening stage were higher than check. Grain yield per 10a was the highest at Alachlor among treatments, while dry matter of leaf and culm were similar among treatments. Therefore, effect of yield increasing of barley by herbicide after sowing was reconfirmed through this study. Especially, effect of Alachlor was lightly high compared with others.
Objective of this research was to determine the influence of physico.chemical properties of root substrates on growth of daughter plants that were developed through plastic bag cultivation of mother plants in 'Seolhyang' strawberry propagation. Six different formulations of root substrates for daughter plant cultivation were peatmoss + vermiculite (5:5, A), peatmoss + perlite (7:3, B), coir dust + perlite (7:3, C), coir dust + peatmoss + perlite (3.5:3.5:3.0, D), rice-hull + coir dust + perlite (2:7:1, E), and rice hull + coir dust (3:7, F). The 10 cm plastic pots filled with formulated substrates were located near the plastic bag where mother plants were growing. Then the runners and daughter plants originated from mother plants were fixed on each root substrate filled into 10 cm plastic pot and daughter plants were grown in the plastic pots. The container capacity and air space showed big differences among substrates tested. The substrates E and F had the less container capacity and the higher air space than other substrates tested. This indicates that the two substrates would have difficulties in water managements during the raising of daughter plants. The substrates of A, B, and D which contained peatmoss in formulation had higher nitrogen concentrations than those containing coir dust or rice hull. The substrates of E and F which contained rice hull had lower nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentrations than those that contained coir. The crown diameters of daughter plants grown in substrate A were around 13 mm which is thicker than those grown in other substrates. The fresh weights of daughter plants grown in A substrate were the heaviest followed by C, F, D, E, and B. The dry weight of daughter plants showed similar tendency to those of fresh weight. The daughter plants which had heavy fresh and dry weights and thick crown diameter are considered good seedlings. Based on this justification, the substrates of A, C and F are acceptable for daughter plant growth of 'Seolhyang' strawberry.
The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of Ca fertilizer on the growth of mother plants, physiological disorders, and occurrence of daughter plants in propagation of 'Seolhyang' strawberry through plastic bag cultivation. To achieve this, chemicals of 1.125 mM $Ca(OH)_2$, 0.375 mM $MgCl_2$, 1.250 mM KCl were blended and designated to combined fertilizer (CF). Then, the effect was compared to the treatment of no Ca application (control) and a commercial fertilizer, CalMag (13-0-1.9-16-6:N-$P_2O_5$-$K_2O$-CaO-MgO), when those were applied every two weeks with controlled electrical conductivity (EC) of solution such as 0.6 or 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The number of plants showing Ca deficiency symptoms was the highest in control treatment, but those decreased significantly in CF or CalMag treatments. The differences between CF and CalMag in appearance of Ca deficient plants were not significant when two fertilizers were applied with same EC. The fresh and dry weights of mother plants were the greater in the treatments of CF or CalMag than those of control treatment. The treatments of 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ of CF or CalMag were more effective than those of 0.6 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ on the fresh and dry weight of the mother plants. The runner lengths in the treatment of 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ of CF were the longest among the all treatments tested. The treatments of 1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ were more effective than those of 0.6 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ of CF or CalMag in lengths and fresh and dry weight of runners. The fresh and dry weights of daughter plants were heavier in the treatments of CF than those of CalMag. Based on the above results, we concluded that the Ca deficiency in raising 'Seolhyang' strawberry can be lessened by the application of Ca containing fertilizers, but combined application of Ca, K and Mg was more effective than that of Ca alone for seedling production.
The effects of sizes and densities of cells cultured, conditioned medium, and media pH on the somatic embryogenesis of carrot (Daucus carota L.) were examined. A large number of globular embryoids was formed after 4 days in cell culture, and later globular embryoids developed into heart and torpedo shape. High cell density resulted in higher number and better growth of embryos, especially on conditioned medium than Murashige-Skoog medium. The fresh weight and number of embryoids formed increased with the decrease in cell size. The significant reduction in fresh weight and number of embryoids was obtained when culturing cells with diameter of over 90 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Dry weight and number of embryoids were markedly reduced with medium pH of 4 or 7, but promoted with pH 6.0.

Growth characteristics according to mixture ratio of used-rockwool in pot nursery, in Pinus densiflora, Torreya nucifera, Quercus acutissina and Fraxinus mandshurica nursery, was investigated. The used-rockwool on mixture ratio between used-rockwool and control (peatmoss: pearlite=1:1, v/v) were 0%, 30%, 50% and 70%. Flesh weight, dry weight and height of tree, in Pinus densiflora nursery, increased much more in 50% and 70% media but trunk diameter of tree had no difference according to mixture ratio. In Torreya nucifera nursery, flesh weight and height of tree in 70% medium and trunk diameter and numbers of shoot of tree in 50% and 70% media increased. Flesh weight, height and trunk diameter of tree, and chlorophyll (SPAD) and photosynthesis rate, in Quercus acutissina nursery, increased much more in 50% and 70% media, but dry weight of tree had only difference between non-mixed and mixed with rockwool. In Fraxinus mandshurica nursery, flesh weight and photosynthesis rate of tree increased much more in 70% medium, height, trunk diameter and total chlorophyll of tree had difference according to non-mixed and mixed with rockwool or had no only difference according to mixture ratio, respectively.
This study was carried out to determine suitable in vitro culture conditions of new ever-bearing strawberry ($Fragaria$$ananassa$ Duch.), 'Goha'. Four-week old plantlets which were derived from the meristem culture were used in this study. Three different culture media including MS, Gamborg B5 and White medium were used for the plant culture and the medium concentrations were at the 5 levels of $1/3{\times}$, $1/2{\times}$, $1{\times}$, $2{\times}$ and $3{\times}$. Sucrose content ranged at four levels of 1, 3, 5 and 8% (w/v). Crown diameter on the MS medium was thicker (2.1 mm) than in other media. Fresh weight on the MS medium was 482 mg, which was heavier than 88 mg or 260 mg of Gamborg B5 or White medium, respectively. Particularly, 1/2MS medium was found to have higher growth rate than these in other treatments (fresh weight, dry weight and D/F rate). Shoot length in the treatment of 1% sucrose concentration was 3.6 cm which was the longest. Shoot length was in inverse proportion to the increasing concentration of sucrose. Fresh weight was increased up to 3% sucrose concentration, but decreased above 5% sucrose concentration. From the results, we found that the best condition for in vitro culture of new ever-bearing strawberry 'Goha' was 1/2MS medium supplemented with 1% sucrose concentration.

The nutrient and irrigation management of scion and rootstock can alleviate stress on grafted transplants after grafting and promote the growth. This study investigated the effects of nutrient and irrigation management of scion and rootstock on the graft-take and growth of grafted pepper transplants. Before grafting, the scions were subjected to different water potential regimes in media by controlling the irrigation frequency and time. The scions were subirrigated 0, 1(two days before grafting), 1(one days before grafting) or 2 times for five days before grafting. The irrigation frequency and time influenced the water potential of media and the growth of scion and grafted transplants. At 13 days after grafting, fresh and dry weight of transplants which were irrigated once at two days before grafting were greater by 29 and 34% than those without irrigation during five days before grafting. This suggests that mild water stress on scion prior to grafting by controlling water management alleviate water stress on grafted transplants after grafting and improve the growth. Before grafting, the rootstocks were subjected to different nutrient regimes by controlling nutrient solution application. The rootstocks were supplied with nutrient solution 0, 1, 2, or 4 times. The nutrient application frequency and time influenced the electrical conductivity (EC) and pH of media. Accordingly, the growth and mineral contents of rootstock and grafted transplants were also affected. At 13 days after grafting, fresh and dry weight of transplants with four times of nutrient application increased by 30 and 20%, respectively, than those without nutrient solution supply during seven days before grafting. Therefore, it is recommended that nutrient solution be supplied more than four times during seven days before grafting for the production of high quality transplants.
