  • Various methodologies have been proposed in discussions of sustainability to meet the needs and sustenance of both civilization and the ecosystem. Among them, the modern concept of biomimicry is emerging as a way to meet both the concepts of sustainable 'development' and 'society', due to its philosophical position encompassing the human-centered world view and the non-human-centered view of ecocentrism. Therefore, in the field of design in which it is necessary to take responsibility for environmental and social problems, this could be a good way to solve these issues. Biomimicry design can generally be divided into three stages: form, function, and ecosystem. From the point of view of ecological sustainability, ecosystem imitation is the most advanced and appropriate design approach that can solve the problems or even prevent them. Accordingly, this study derived a biomimicry design approach in the ecosystem imitation stage based on the concepts of biomimicry, ecological sustainability, and ecological aesthetics. The detailed approaches are 'imitation of the natural providence', 'imitation of the ecosystem's creation process', and 'imitation of the ecological cycle'. This study investigated and presented cases, such as the design imitating the ecological mechanism of microorganisms and the work using mark-making based on the derived design approach, because it could be too conceptual and idealistic by itself. Through this, we explored a method of applying and visualizing the concept of biomimicry in textile design at the ecosystem imitation level and showed its feasibility, although it still has difficulties in practical use.

  • Recently, researches on resource allocation algorithms operating in a distributed way are widely conducted because of the increasing number of network nodes and the rapidly changing the network environment. In this paper, we propose Multi-Hop DESYNC(MH DESYNC), that is bio-inspired TDMA-based resource allocation scheme operating in a distributed manner in multi-hop networks. In this paper, we define a frame structure for the proposed MH DESYNC algorithm and firing message structure which is a reference for resource allocation and propose the related operating procedures. We show that MH DSYNC can resolve the hidden-node problem effectively and verify that each node shares resources fairly among its neighboring nodes. Through simulation evaluations, it is shown that MH DESYNC algorithm works well in a multi-hop networks. Furthermore, results show that MH DESYNC algorithm achieves better performance than CSMA/CA algorithm in terms of throughput.

  • In this paper, we propose an energy efficient and delay guaranteed node scheduling scheme inspired by biological systems, which have gained considerable attention as a computing and problem solving technique. With the identification of analogies between cellular signaling systems and WSN systems, we formulate a new mathematical model that considers the networking challenges of WSNs. The proposed bio-inspired algorithm determines the state of the sensor node, as required by each application and as determined by the local environmental conditions and the states of the adjacent nodes. A control analysis shows that the proposed bio-inspired scheme guarantees the system stability by controlling the parameters of each node. Simulation results also indicate that the proposed scheme provides significant energy savings, as well as reliable delay guarantees by controlling the states of the sensor nodes.

  • An analysis and design method for reducing aerodynamic noise in high-speed trains based on biomimetics of noiseless flight of owl is proposed. Wind tunnel testing and numerical CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation for the basic inter-coach spacing model are carried out, and their results compared. To determine the effect of scaling of the owl's flight feather on the noise reduction, two-fold and a four-fold scaled up model of the feather are constructed, and the numerical simulations are carried out to obtain the aerodynamic noise levels for each scale. Original model is found to reduce the noise level by 10 dB, while two-fold increase in length dimensions reduces the noise by 12 dB. Validation of numerical solution using wind tunnel experimental measurements are presented as well.

  • Today, high-speed trains enjoy wide acceptance as fast, convenient and environment-friendly means of transportation. However, increase in the speed of the train entails a concomitant increase in the aerodynamic noise, adversely affecting the passenger comfort. At the train speed exceeding 300 km/h, the effects of turbulent flows and vortex sheddding are greatly amplified, contributing to a significant increase in the aerodynamic noise. Drawing a biomimetic analogy from low-noise flight of owl, a method to reduce aerodynamic noise at inter-coach space of high-speed trains is investigated. The proposed method attempts to achieve the noise reduction by modifying the turbulent flow and vortex shedding characteristics at the inter-coach space. To determine the aerodynamic noise at various train speeds, wind tunnel testing and numerical CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation for the basic inter-coach spacing model are carried out, and their results compared. The simulation and experimental results reveal that there are discrete frequency components associated with turbulent air flow at constant intervals in the frequency domain

  • In this study, the flexural performance of Highly Ductile Cement Composites(HDCC) mimicking boundary conditions of shellfish skin layer was evaluated. To improve ductility by mimicking the boundary skin layer structure of shellfish, the method of stratification by charging between precast panels using HDCC and the method of distributing PE-mesh to the interface surface were applied. Evaluation of flexural performance of layered cement composite materials mimicking boundary conditions of shellfish skin layer resulted in increased ductility of all test specimens applied with stratified cross-section compared to typical bending test specimens. The layered method by inserting PE-mesh showed excellent ductility. This is most likely because the inserted PE-mesh made an interface for separating the layers while the HDCC pillars in the PE-mesh gave adhesion between layers.

  • Birds and insect in nature morph their mean camberline shapes to obtain both lift and thrust simultaneously. Previous unsteady thin airfoil theories were derived mainly for a rigid flapping airfoil. An extended unsteady thin airfoil theory for a deformable airfoil is required to analyze the unsteady two-dimensional aerodynamic characteristics of a biomorphing wing. Theodorsen's approach is extended to calculate the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of a biomorphing airfoil. The mean camberline of the airfoil is represented as a polynomial. The unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the morphing airfoil are represented as noncirculatory and circulatory terms. Present theory can be applied to the unsteady aerodynamic analysis of a flapping biomorphing airfoil and the aeroelastic analysis of a morphing wing.
