  • Using the Duff and Noland's method, the annual ring growth patterns of the red pine in the natural stands were examined at two locations; Seocheon, Chungnam-do where the stand had been infested with the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis, during the years from 1975 to 1978, and Hongsong, Chungnam-do where had been no incidence of the insect damage. The results obtained are as follows: 1) With the normal red pine of 13 year old, the growth pattern in the oblique sequence indicates that the annual growth rates are maximum at the few terminal internodes, and decrease gradually with the downward internodes. Such characteristic of the growth pattern is not clear in the horizontal sequence of annual rings. 2) The indications of the radial growth reduction of the pine tree due to the pine gall midge infestation could be examined with any of three series at the crown level internodes; horizontal, vertical and oblique series. For the basal internodes, however, the horizontal series appeared to be inadequate for the analysis of the damage impact because it seemed to be masked by various factors other than direct effects of the damage. 3) Of the three ways of radial growth analyses, oblique sequence seems to be the most usefull, especially for the detection of the impact on growth caused by incipient or light infestation.

  • To produce γ-linolenic acid (GLA) by cell cultures of Lithospermum erythrorhizon, we optimized medium compositions including carbon sources, nitrogen sources and growth regulators. MS basal medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L 2, 4-D was effective for callus induction from mesophyll tissue. Addition of sucrose at 88mM concentration induced active proliferation of suspension cells and increased GLA content. Increased supplement of potassium nitrate as nitrogen source resulted in proliferous cell growth and increased total fatty acid content Abscisic acid increased cell growth and fatty acid content in callus culture, whereas as it had an inhibitory effect in suspension cell culture.

  • Late blight, one of the most important disease in many agricultural crops, is caused by Phytophthora infestans. Fusarium wilt is a vascular disease of many plants caused by Fusarium oxysporum. Some bacteria isolated from rhizosphere were screened for their ability to inhibit the growth of F. oxysporum and P. infestans. Productions of siderophore, β1,3-glucanase, hydrogen cyanide and chitinase by 4 isolated strains were examined. Among them, Bacillus sp. RFO41 most effectively inhibited the growth of F. oxysporum. The highest productions of siderophore and βl,3-glucanase were shown in the culture of Bacillus sp. RFO41. Bacillus strain PS2 was most effective against P. infestans. PS2 showed the highest production of chitinase and hydrogen cyanide. A significant relationship was shown between the antagonistic effects of isolates against F. oxysporum and P. infestans and their production level of siderophore, β1,3-glucanase, hydrogen cyanide, and chitinase.

  • This experiment was carried out to elucidate the biological activity and absorption characteristics of flavonoids in Rhizobium and Bradyrhizobium and to obtain basic information on host specific nodulation by flavonoids in rhizobium-legume symbiosis. The purpose of the present study was to explore the biological activity and the flavonoid absorption indicates that host-specificity is induced by flavonoids in symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Biological activity increased by daidzein and genistein treatment on B. japonicum KCTC 1539 whereas decreased by luteolin treatment but increased by luteolin treatment on R. meliloti whereas decreased by daidzein and genistein treatment. Daidzein and genistein are absorbed by B. japonicum, KCTC 1539 at higher rate than other flavonoids. Especially, luteolin was absorbed at a least rate. Luteolin are absorbed by R. meliloti KCTC 2353 at higher rate than other flavonoids. Especially, daidzein and genistein was absorbed at a least rate.

  • We analyzed the patterns of mineral ions and growth responses among symbiotic nitrogen fixing legumes by external nitrogen applications under salt gradients. Glycine max, Phaseolus angularis and Albizzia julibrissin showed remarkable growth inhibition above 40 mM NaCl treatments, but Cassia tora did not exhibit any visible injury symptom up to 100 mM NaCl treatments. As to ionic pattern, the Na+ and Clcontents in leaves of G. max, P. angularis and A. julibrissin progressively increased with higher contents of external salinity. Compared to other plants, C. tora excluded Na+more efficiently and maintained rather constant ionic contents in spite of high salt levels. With a few exception, these 4 legume plants exhibited better growth by the external nitrogen supply rather than the contribution of symbiotic nitrogen fixation only under saline condition.

  • This study aims to reveal the relationship between major climatic factors and radial growth in Siu-ri, NamYangJuSi, Kyeonggido. To identify tree growth responses to climatic variation, we used correlation analysis after standardization and cross-dating of tree ring growth. We use the climatic data(monthly mean, minimum, maximum temperature and precipitation) from September of previous year to August of current year. In terms of relationship between mean, minimum, maximum temperature and tree ring growth, negative correlations were observed in September and October of the previous year. In case of Quercus mongolica, negative relationship were appeared in December of the previous year, January and February of present year. When it comes monthly maximum temperature, August and September of present year was negatively correlated with radial growth in the case of Pinus densiflora. We can conclude that reduced soil moisture due to high temperatures causes a water stress that stunts tree growth. In contrast, there are positive correlations in March of present year. These results suggest that high temperatures in March appear to prolong the growing season. Growth was positively correlated with precipitation from October to December of previous year and from May to September of present year. The results suggest that the smooth water supply from precipitation can promote the tree growth.

  • Algae are vital in the primary production of the aquatic ecosystem, having been considered as good indicators of the bioactivity of pesticides. Algae have short life cycle, respond quickly to environmental change and their diversity and density can indicate the quality of their habitat. The purpose of the study was to determine the growth inhibition effects of butachlor (Tech. 93.4%) and K2Cr2O7 (Tech. 99.5%) in Selenastrum capriconutum, Scenedesmus subspicatus, Chlorella vulgaris and Nitzschia palea during and exposure period of 72 hours. The toxicological responses of S. capriconutum, S. subspicatus, C. vulgaris and N. Palea to butachlor, expressed in individual ErC50 values were 0.0022, 0.019, 8.67 and 4.94mgL1, respectively. NOEC values were 0.0008, 0.0016, 5.34 and 2.92mgL1, respectively. S. capriconutum was more sensitive than the other algae species. The toxicological responses of S. capriconutum, S. subspicatus, C. vulgaris and N. palea to K2Cr2O7 expressed as ErC50 values were 0.91, 0.78, 0.85 and 0.57mgL1, respectively. NOEC values were 0.2, 0.2, 0.2 and 0.18mgL1, respectively. Growth inhibition of S. capriconutum, S. subspicatus, C. vulgaris and N. palea from PEC of butachlor were 100, 75, 0 and 0%, respectively.

  • The damage by the black-tipped sawfly, Acantholyda posticalis posticalis Matsumura, has been increasing at several locations in central part of the Korean peninsula. This study was undertaken at selected plots in Kapyung-gun, Kyunggi Province and Hongchon-gun, Kangwon Province from 1984 to 1987. The purpose of this study was to provide basic information for integrated control of this pest and to determine the economic threshold by investigating the pest host interactions with special reference to damage analysis. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The damage was more severe at upper part than at lower part of the crown. The vertical distribution of dry weight of damaged trees above ground showed L-type distribution, whereas that of healthy trees showed C-type distribution. 2. The needle loss by sawfly reduced both of height and the diameter growth of the main stem. The growth reduction occurs when the needle loss is 50% or higher. About 10% of tree growth was reduced at 50% of needle loss. 3. The reduction of diameter growth was more severe at upper part than at lower part of the main stem. 4. Volume growth was reduced when more than 50% of the needles were damaged after three years of the sawfly infestation. Reductions of total volume increment at the levels 70% and 90% of needle damage were 9% and 20%, respectively.
