This experiment was carried out to compare growth and fruit setting characteristics in ten winter-planted paprika (Capsicim annuum L.) cultivars. Five red line paprika cultivars ('Maduro', 'Maranello', 'Nagano', 'Sirocco' and 'Special') and five yellow line paprika cultivars ('Coletti', 'Sven', 'Thialf', 'Volante' and 'Zagato') were used for this study. The experiment was performed for 42 weeks, from winter of 2013 to autumn of 2014. Based on the growth stages of paprika, growth characteristics were investigated six times, and each investigation was categorized from group 1 through group 6. The relative internode ratio showed a normal range at the early growth stage, but tended to gradually decline as growth progressed. This trend was greater in red line paprika than in yellow line paprika. Among the cultivars used for this experiment, 'Special' and 'Zagato' showed growth inhibition, whereas 'Maranello' and 'Volante' kept a balanced growth during summer cultivation. The fruit set percentage in yellow paprika was 10.8% higher than in red paprika, while the number of branches in yellow paprika was 4.1% less than in red paprika. When measured after the full fruiting age, from June to July, the number of fruit set in group 4 was much lower in 'Sirocco' and 'Coletti' than in any of the other cultivars, indicating that they were more sensitive to the growth environment during the rainy season. These findings suggest that 'Maranello', 'Nagano', 'Sven', 'Thialf', and 'Volante' could be effectively used for summer cultivation in a high-plastic-film greenhouse, and 'Maranello', 'Special', 'Volante', and 'Zagato' could be good candidates for a low-plastic-film greenhouse.
Main lactic acid bacteria fermenting “Baechu Kimchi” and” “Dongchim”, which are indigenous fermented food in Korea, were isolated at optimum fermentation period and identified. The three groups of food preservatives-sorbic acid, p-hydroxybutyl benzoate (POBB), p-hydroxypropyl benzoate (POPB), and sorbic acid-POBB were prepared, and the effect of the food preservatives and various salt concentrations on those lactic acid bacteria was examined. The results obatined are as follows; 1. Lactic acid bacteria were isolated from “Baechu Kimchi” and “Dongchimi”and identifed as Leuconostoc mesonteriodse, Lactobacillus plantatum, Lactobacillus brevis, Streptococcus faecalis, and Pedicoccus pentosaceus. 2. Lactic acid bacteria were grown much better at 0.5-2% NaCl level than 0% NaCl level. 3. Among the isolated lactic acid bactera, Lactobacillus plantarum showed the highest acid producibility. The lower the concentration of NaCl, the higher the acid producibility by Leuconostoc mesentroides, and the other bacteria produced a large amount of acid at 0.5-2.5% NaCl level. 4. Both the sorbic acid (0.05-0.1%) and sorbic (0.05%)-POBB (0.004%) groups showed the highest preservatives effect. In contrast, however, POPB (0.01% ) Group showed the lowest effect, and the preservatives effect was enhanced by the addition of NaCl. Lactobacillus plantarum was least affected by all preservatives, whereas Leuconostoc mesentroides was most affected by them.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the addition level (0 ppm, 400 ppm, 800 ppm, and 1,200 ppm) of green tea extract on the lactic acid bacteria, oxidative stability, and aroma in kimchi-fermented sausage. The sample sausages were fermented at $24^{\circ}C/RH$ 89% until attained to a pH value of 4.9 (for 17 h), and then dried at $10^{\circ}C/RH$ 75-80% for 6 d. The lactic acid bacteria count and pH value were 7.5-7.7 Log CFU/g sausage and 4.30-4.33, respectively, at 6 d of ripening. The results of those did not show significant differences among all treatments. The formation of TBARS (2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) was significantly lowered by increasing the addition level of green tea extract. During ripening periods, the CIE $L^*$ and $a^*$ values decreased; however, the $b^*$ value increased due to the addition of green tea extract. Utilizing an electric nose, the aroma pattern was clearly discriminated between green tea extract treatments and the control. Therefore, in kimchi-fermented sausages, the high addition level of green tea extract improved the lipid oxidation stability. In addition, regardless of the addition level, green tea extract changed the aroma while reducing the color stability. Moreover, it did not have any effect on the growth of lactic acid bacteria.
In order to develop a new starter for fermented milk, Lactobacillus plantarum M23 was isolated from raw milk and investigated for physiological characteristics. It showed good tyrosinase inhibitory activity compared with commercial lactic acid bacteria. The optimum growth temperature of Lactobacillus plantarum M23 was $40^{\circ}C$ and cultures took 17 hr to reach pH 4.3. Lactobacillus plantarum M23 showed more sensitivity to Penicillin-G, Oxacillin, Novobiocin, Chloramphenicol in a comparison of 12 different antibiotics, and showed most resistance to Vancomycin. It showed higher leucine arylamidase and ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activities compared to 16 other enzymes. It was comparatively tolerant to bile juice and able to survive at pH 2 for 3 hours. It showed high resistance to Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus with rates of 77.8%, 86.5% and 83.8%, respectively. Based on these and previous results, Lactobacillus plantarum M23 could be an excellent starter culture for fermented milk with high resistance to melanin.
Germination percentage of Korean native lily seeds was high at $20-25^{\circ}C$. It was almost 100% in L. cernuum, L. callosum, L. amabile, and L. concolor, 88.0% in L. lancifolium, and 73.0% in L. maximowitzii, respectively. Meanwhile, it was low rate of 34.0%-54.0% in L. distichum, L. hansonii, and L. tsingtauense. Germination was mostly delayed of $15^{\circ}C$ and days to germination were more shortened in species with higher germination percentage. Even though the effect of daylength was not considerable in germination rate, it was promoted in L. maximowitzii but it was delyed in L. hansonii under long day. The effect of soaking in hot PGRs solution in L. callosum, L. cernuum, L. amabile, L. lancifolium, and L. concolor did not show any difference in comparison with non-treatment. However, it was improved by BA in L. maximowitzii. Longer period of cold wet storage resulted in improved germination percentage in L. maximowitzii and L. lancifolium, while it affected decreased percentage in L. distichum and L. hansonii. Days to germination were shortened by longer period of cold wet storage regardless of species. Germination percentage in dry storage was higher under cold temperature than room temperature and under desiccator storage than outside desiccator, it was highest under desiccator storage at $4^{\circ}C$. It was drastically reduced by the non-use desiccator storage at room temperature L. concolor, however it was improved only by the use of desiccator L. maximowitzii for a long time.

A new spray chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar, 'Dimple' was developed from a cross between 'champy' and 'SP05-135', by selection of seedlings and lines at the Flower Research Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 2005 to 2009. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2007 to 2009 under condition of forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Dimple' was October 24th, and year-round production was possible by day-length control. This cultivar has single type flowers with bright yellow ray floret and green center. The plant is very vigorous and very stable in the color of petals when it is cultivated even under high temperature condition in summer. Its flower was 4.7 cm in diameter, and it had 20.3 flowers per stem in autumn. The days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 50 in spring season, and 'Dimple' showed the vase life of 21.3 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for the protection in 2009.

In March of 2004, gray snow mold (Typhula blight) caused by Typhula spp. occurred on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poo pratensis L.) at MuJu golf courses in Jeonbuk Province. Leaves in the affected areas were matted together and frequently covered with white to grayish mycelia. Sclerotia were formed on the leaf blade, leaf sheath, or crown regions. The fungus isolated from the diseased leaf formed whitish mycelium, clamp connections, and light pink to brown, irregular-shaped small sclerotia of less than 1.4 mm in diameter, which are characteristic to Typhula incarnata. Optimum temperature ranges for mycelial growth were $5^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. The causal organism was confirmed to be T. incarnata as the partial sequence of its ribosomal RNA ITS1 (internal transcribed spacer) region was 91% homologous to those of T. incarnata in GenBank database. Out of the 14 fungicides tested fur antifungal activity in vitro, 10 fungicides including iprodione, tebuconazole, polyoxin D, flutolanil, hexaconazole, tolclofos-methyl, fosetyl-Al, mepronil, pencycuron+tebuconazole, and fenarimol completely inhibited fungal growth at their recommended concentrations. In the field test, these fungicides and others such as thifluzamide and thiram effectively controlled the gray snow mold of turfgrass with some variable degrees of control efficacies.

We decided the efficient application timings of organo-synthetic insecticides for controlling the first generation larvae of O. furnacalis through investigations of insect stage-specific densities, damage aspects in maize, and effects of insecticides. A waxy maize cultivar, Ilmichal, was cultivated from April 20 (sowing) to July 26 (harvest, dough stage of maize) in Suwon, 2016. The maximum and 50% cumulative catch dates of the overwintering generation adults in the sex pheromone trapping were May 29 and May 31, respectively. Most of the first generation larvae finished their occurrence till the early reproductive stage of maize. The first generation larvae fed on leaves inside the whorl leaves before tassel and stem development of maize, sequentially moved to tassel and stem, and then moved finally to stem and ear parts. In the results of insecticide applications at different dates, the 9-11 leaf stage (June 10~17) and the 6-7 leaf stage (June 3) of maize were the most efficient application timings for direct spray of Etofenprox EC to maize, and for application of Carbofuran granules onto soil surface, respectively, which resulted in suppression of tunnelling damages. The timings for the two insecticides were 12-19 days and 5 days after the adult maximum catch date, respectively. Those timings after the 50% cumulative adult catch date were advanced 2 days.

Elsholtzia byeonsanensis is a Korean native plant of the Lamiaceae family, and was first introduced in the Korean Journal of Plant Taxonomy. This plant has a short plant length of 20-35 cm, with leathery and glossy leaves. The purple flowers bloom in November, so they are highly useful as potted or ground cover ornamental plants. In this study, tray cell size (128, 162, and 200-cell trays), soil composition [horticultural soil (HS): decomposed granite (DG) 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4 (v:v)], seeding rate (1, 2, and 3 seeds per cell) and additional fertilizer concentrations (0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/L Hyponex) were tested to find out the optimum seedling growth conditions. As a result of the study, E. byeonsanensis growth increased proportionally as the cell size of the tray increased. The growth was inhibited as the percentage of DG increased. As for the growth according to the seeding rate, plant height, plant width, leaf length, and leaf width decreased as the seeding rate increased, but there was no difference in the number of leaves, stem diameter, and root length. There was an increasing trend in seedling growth as the additional fertilizer concentration increased. Therefore, for producing E. byeonsanensis seedling, it is most effective to fill HS or HS:DG 1:1 in 128-cell trays, sow one seed per cell, and spray the seedling at 1000 mg/L for additional fertilizer.

The objective of this study was to achieve biological control of green mold disease in Pyogo mushrooms using antagonistic microorganisms. Bacillus subtilis BSM320 cells inhibited mycelial growth by 48-60% against three Trichodermaisolates including T. hazianumisolated from the substrates of Lentinula edodes, showing their antifungal activity. The bacteria were cultured to a high density of 4.2 × 109±113.7 cfu/mlin aqueous extract of composted spent mushroom substrates of L. edodes containing 1% glucose and showed a higher growth rate than that observed when using the commercial medium, Luria-Bertani broth. The bacterial culture showed a 75% protective effect without damaging the mushroom fruiting bodies. These results suggest that B. subtilis BSM320culture is suitable for biological control of green mold disease during mushroom cultivation.
