  • This study was conducted to reveal the relationship between physiological characteristics and growth by family for open-pollinated progeny stand of Korean white pine in Gapyung site. Average growth performance of total 25 families for 18 years old progeny stand in this study site showed 5.9m in mean height, 8.9cm in mean DBH, $12.0m^2$ in basal area per hectare and $46.5m^3$ in volume per hectare, respectively. By the analysis result of growth performance for all 25 families, family No. 20 showed the most excellent growth and middle in family No. 10. On the other hand, family No. 3 represented the worst growth among the 25 families. The change of seasonal photosynthesis rate by increasing luminous intensity was the same tendency as the growth pattern of all 25 families and showed the same results in all four seasons. In the seasonal analysis, the photosynthesis rate was increased as the season has changed from winter to summer. Chlorophyll contents was also increased from winter to summer. Especially, family No. 20 which is the best in growth performance has more chlorophyll contents than the others. In addition, family No. 20 was also better than other families in the weight of assimilation tissue(g), length of needle(cm), width of needle(cm), and number of Stoma. However, in water utilization rate, family No. 3 which is the worst in the growth performance showed the best result that is reverse tendency compared with the photosynthesis rate. The changes of water utilization rate represented to be increased as the season has changed from winter to summer.

  • Five local cultivars of northern type garlics (Allium sativum L.) and one of southern type were collected, and their growth and developmental characteristics and productivity were investigated to select a well adaptable cultivar in Euiseong region. Local cultivars used in this experiment were 'Euiseong', 'Yeochun', 'Danyang', 'Jungsun', and 'Yongin' as northern type and 'Namdo' as southern one. The growth characteristic of local garlic cultivars were differed with their ecotypes and 'Namdo', a southern type cultivar, showed higher growth rate at the early growing stage than northern types. However, no clear differences were observed among northern types. Incidence of bolting was low in 'Jungsun' and 'Yongin', while high in 'Euiseong' and 'Yeochun'. In the case of incomplete bolting, however, an opposite trend was showed, thus, high in 'Jungsun' and low in 'Euiseong' and 'Yeochun'. Secondary growth was remarkably low in 'Euiseong'. Considering yield factors, 'Yeochun' seemed to be most promising northern type cultivar in Euiseong region, which showed highest bulb weight and largest cloves with high growth rate at the maximum growing stage. 'Danyang', 'Jungsun', and 'Yongin' seemed to have relatively low productivity in Euiseong region.

  • This study has been undertaken to research the characteristics of growth of Pinus thunbergii Parl., which were planted in Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk, Coast Disaster Prevention Forest. The total amount of 3600 trees of 9 sand dune stabilizing hedges were monitored in the past 4 years. The relationship between tree growth with environmental factors such as wind speed, soil conditions and sand-accumulation fences has been compared and investigated. To increase the growth increment of coastal disaster prevention forests, the development of sand-accumulating fences is the most important factor in controlling wind speed effectively. The monitoring for the maximizing wind-break effect of the sand-accumulating fences should be investigated when building coastal disaster prevention forests.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the growth characteristics and aboveground carbon storage for old growth Zelkova serrata artificial forests (site1: age class IX, site2: age class VIII) in Gwangneung Experimental Forest. The trees were classified by crown classes for analyzing forest stand structure. The growth characteristics were analized through ringwidth increment by crown classes and stem analysis of dominant trees. There were a wide range of DBH (site1: 8~62 cm, site2: 14~40 cm) and height (site1: 8~26 m, site2: 12~26 m) distributions and revealed different growth characteristics by crown classes in both sites. The mean annual increment (MAI) of ringwidth for the last 5 years of dominant trees for site1 (3.3 mm) was higher than MAI of ringwidth of total growth period (2.3 mm) and MAI of ringwidth for the last 5 years of dominant trees for site2 (2.2 mm) was equal to MAI of ringwidth of total growth period (2.2 mm). Also, the growth increment of ringwidth by crown classes had significant differences between dominant tree and the others crown classes (p<0.01) in both sites. As a results of stem analysis of dominant trees in both sites, there were similar to their volume between site1 (1.106 $m^3$) and site2 (1.035 $m^3$). In spite of old age, the annual increment of volume has been increasing steadily until recent year. Meanwhile, total aboveground carbon storage of site1 (65.6 Mg C $ha^{-1}$) was higher than that of site2 (56.1 Mg C $ha^{-1}$). The proportion of dominant and co-dominant trees to total aboveground carbon storage was more than 90% and the greatest individual aboveground carbon storage by crown classes was dominant tree in all both sites. However, individual aboveground carbon storage of dominant tree in site1 had 0.054 Mg C $tree^{-1}$ more than site2 owing to the differences from average DBH of dominant trees by sites. We think that these results will contribute to the forest practice for Zelkova serrata artificial forests as a basic information.

  • The growth performance of eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) was studied with six provenances originated from U.S. in a Hwasong plantation. Height and diameter growth were significantly different among provenances. In general, the growth of southern provenances were larger than that of northern provenances. Georgia and North Carolina provenances proved to be appropriate ones in our plantation, while Minnesota was worst in growth. Annual height growth was still increased at age 27, whereas annual diameter growth was highest at age 11, after that growth rate was gradually decreased. Pearson's correlation among ages was highly positively correlated. The rank of growth has not almost been changed from juvenile stages to at age 27.

  • This study was carried out to select the utilizable plants for the slope revegetation in dams, lakes and streams. In this study, 4 Iris species were investigated for their survival and growth characteristics in the complete and partly flooding condition with various flooding periods. The results are as followings; Iris pseudoacorus showed the highest flooding tolerance based on survival rate and growth condition. Iris ensata var. spotanea, I. setosa and I. nertschinskia followed after Iris pseudoacorus in the order of flooding tolerance. When I. pseudoacorus were completely submerged in the water, their growth was disturbed but they did not die up to 120 days. On the other hand, I. nertschinskia, I. setosa and I. ensata var. spotanea showed a significant growth disturbance in the complete water submergence and died in 90 days. This explained that they were relatively strong in flooding tolerance. They are considered to grow back to normal with some changes of water level.

  • Two nitrite oxidizing bacteria, NOB1 and NOB2, were isolated from anaerobic digester liquer of food wastewater and analyzed for their growth characteristics and the ability to oxidize nitrite under different temperature, pH, and DO( dissolved oxygen) concentrations. Both of the isolated strains have shown the best growth at pH 7.0 and at $35^{\circ}C$, and also shown higher growth rate with the increasing dissolved oxygen concentrations. As the factors to restrict the growth of these strains, parameters such as pH and DO were found to be effective ones, by increasing (up to 9.0) or decreasing pH (up to 5.0), or lowing DO below 1.0 ppm. Especially, the ability to oxidize nitrite in both strains was about 50% lower in below 1.0 ppm of DO than above of 1.0 ppm. NOB2 was found to be two times greater in both the growth rate and the nitrite-oxidizing ability than NOB1.
