  • This study was conducted to investigate relationships among cow daily milk yield, calf body weight at birth and 3 month of age and calf preweaning daily gain. Cow daily milk yield(DMILK) of 90 days after postpartum measured by weigh-suckle-weight method, calf birth weight(BW), calf body weight at 3 month of age(WT3), and calf preweaning daily gain from birth to 3 month of age(PDG) were collected from June to November on 2002 and April to November on 2003. All traits studied were considered as cow traits and analysed by WOMBAT packages to obtain A-I REML(average information restricted maximum likelihood) estimates. Heritability estimate of daily milk yield uncorrected for cow-calf separation time(DMILK) was 0.39, which was not differ from 0.36 of heritability estimate corrected on the basis of 24 hour cow-calf separation time(CMILK). Heritability estimates for maternal genetic effects of BW, WT3 and PDG were respectively 0.28, 0.17 and 0.18. Genetic correlations between DMILK and maternal effect of BW, WT3 and PDG were respectively 0.59, 0.79 and 0.68. High genetic correlation coefficients of DMILK with WT3 and PDG indicate that selections for maternal breeding value for WT3 or PDG may be effective to enhance the cow’s milk production ability in Hanwoo.

  • This study was performed to investigate the relation between birth weight and survivability on the production of cloned Hanwoo calves. The 580 cloned embryos were transferred into the 293 recipients. The pregnancy rate of the cloned embryos was 72.3% at 50 days after embryo transfer, and then the rate was dramatically decreased. The mean gestation lengths were 287 days in both clone (range of$279{\sim}295$ days) and artificial insemination (AI, range of $255{\sim}293$ days) calves, respectively. The mean birth weight of cloned calves (30.3kg) was significantly higher compared to that of AI calves (23.7kg) (p<0.05). Among the cloned calves, the birth weight was not different in both normal delivery (n=17, 29.9kg) and caesarean section (n=14, 32.3kg). The weight, however, was significantly higher in the clones (n=18, 32.8kg) dead within 175 days than that of the clones (n=11, 28.3kg) alive more than 175 days after birth (p<0.05). Interestingly, all cloned calves weighed <15kg (n=5) or >35kg (n=9) at birth have been dead within 175 days from the date of birth. The causes of death in the cloned calves were premature birth (n=2, 10.0%), abnormal function of lung and liver (n=2, 10.0%), abnormal function of lung (n=4, 20.0%), malformation (n=4, 20.0%), unknown (n=4, 20.0%), and sudden death syndrome (n=4, 20.0%), respectively. Our findings suggest that normal birth weight is one of the most important factors to survive more than 6 months in cloned calves.

  • This study was conducted from 1974 to 1977 at Chedong Animal Farm in Che-Ju to determine the effect of sex of calves, birth year and season, breeds and crossing methods on the birth weight of cattle. A total of 1020 calves from Angus, Charolais, Hereford breeds and their crossbred were used for the study and least square methods was applied to analysis the data. Birth weight of male calves was 1kg heavier than that of female. Highly significant differences were obtained in the effects of birthyear on the birth weight, i.e. the cattle born in 1976 and 1977 was 0.9 and 0.2kg heavier in birth weight than those born in 1975. The cattle born in 1974, when the farm was established, was 1.7kg lighter than those in 1975. The calves born in the spring and the summer was 0.6 and 0.3kg heavier in birth weight than those born in the winter. The calves born in the fall was 0.9kg lighter than the calves born in the winter. In birth weight, Charolais breed were 0.4kg heavier than those from Hereford breed. Angus breed were 1.1kg lighter than Hereford. The crossbred between Charolais and Hereford breed were 1.5kg heavier than the Hereford. The birth weight of calves from Angus and Hereford crossbred and Angus and Charolais crossbred were 0.6 and 0.4kg lighter, than Hereford breed respectively.

  • The study was conducted to obtain some genetic information for breeding of mice. Average performance, heterosis and genetic variance were estimated with 362 progenies from a full diallel cross of four lines of mice (BALB/c, CBA, C3H and C57BL). The progenies were reared at the Experimental Animal Farm. College of Agriculture, Kyungpook National University from November, 1984 to February, 1985. Data for litter size. sex ratio, body weight and weaning rate were analyzed into heterosis effects, and genetic variance with Hayman's model. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Average performance was 7.54 in litter size, 53.20 % in sex ratio, 1.55 g in birth weight, 10.45 g in weaning weight and 94.13 % in weaning rate. 2. The estimated heterois was 6.97% in litter size, 7.26 % in sex ratio, 6.08% in birth weight, 3.54% in weaning weight and 2.05% in weaning rate, respectively. 3. Additive gene effects were not observed in litter size, sex ratio, birth weight, weaning weight and weaning rate. In litter size and weaning weight, dominance effects were observed, which were shown due to individual crosses in litter size and were shown mean dominance effects of parental line in weaning weight. Mat-Maternal effects appeared in birth weight and weaning weight, and reciprocal effects were observed in weaning weight.

  • Data were collected from 1996 through 2000 on Korean Native Goats by the National Livestock Research Institute of Korea were used to estimate genetic parameters for birth, 3 month, and 6 month body weights. Estimates were obtained with MTDFREML. Model included animal and maternal genetic and residual effects. The model included sex, birth year-season, and feeding type as fixed factors. Average body weights and standard deviation were 1.78${\pm}$0.32 at birth of age, 7.99${\pm}$2.66 at 3 month of age, and 12.08${\pm}$3.20 kg at 6 month of age, respectively. Average body measurements were 36.46cm for withers height, 38.06cm for body length, and 45.56cm for heart girth at 3 month of age, and were 40.27cm for withers height, 42.01cm for body length, and 51.07cm for heart girth at 6 month of age, respectively. Estimates of heritability were 0.66 for birth weight, 0.34 for 3 month body weight, and 0.27 for 6 month body weight, respectively. Maternal effects would be important for birth and 3 month body weights and may not be needed in a model for 6 month body weight.

  • This study evaluated the effect of recipient's breed on the gestation length and birth weight of Hanwoo calves produced by Hanwoo ovum pick up (OPU) derived embryos. Embryos of OPU derived Hanwoo cows were transferred into the Hanwoo and Holstein recipients at 6~7 days of estrus cycle. Gestation length was expressed in days from the day of embryo transfer to the birth day of offspring, and birth weight of offspring was recorded within 24 h of birth. Breed of recipient cows (Hanwoo and Holstein) has no effect on overall gestation length ($280.9{\pm}6.2$ vs. $284.4{\pm}9.8$ days) and birth weight of calves ($23.56{\pm}3.75$ vs. $27.70{\pm}7.92\;kg$). The gestation length was higher (p<0.05) for male calves than female calves in both Hanwoo ($283.8{\pm}6.7$ vs. $277.3{\pm}3.3$ days) and Holstein ($287.3{\pm}8.9$ vs. $280.1{\pm}9.1$ days) recipient cows. Birth weight of Hanwoo calves did not differ when Hanwoo recipients ($26.5{\pm}1.3$ vs. $23.3{\pm}1.2\;kg$) were used for embryo transfer. However, male calves were heavier (p<0.05) at birth than that of female calves when embryos were transferred into the Holstein cow ($33.5{\pm}4.9$ vs. $27.8{\pm}4.9\;kg$). In conclusion, the present results demonstrated that breed of recipient cows have no effect on gestation length and birth weight of OPU derived Hanwoo calves. However, gestation length and birth weight of male calves were higher in both Hanwoo and Holstein recipient cows.
