  • This study was conducted to evaluate the adequacy of an alternative a.m. - p.m. testing scheme for milk yield in comparison with the official test method based on weighing two milkings within 24 h. A total of 8,309 p.m. milking weights and 6,767 am. milking weights from 72 Holstein cows raised at N.L.R.I. were collected between October 2000 and November 2001. Seven statistical models were fitted to the data to derive formulas for estimating daily milk yields from morning or evening yields. In general, use of evening milkings less accurately estimated than did use morning rnilkings. Although the models do not differ much in the correlations between estimated and true daily milk yields, systematic under- and overestimation of daily milk yields were observed in all models with the exception of model 7, which accounted for heterogeneous variances by parity class, milking interval class, and lactation stage by fitting separate regression formulas within each combination of three factors.

  • We measured net primary productivity, annual accumulation of organic carbon and leaf decomposition of Salix community in the flood plain of the Han River and the Nakdong River. Net primary productivity, annual accumulation of organic carbon of the Salix community were 22.5ton/ha/yr(16.7ton/ha/yr-31.2ton/ha/yr) and 9.7ton C/ha/yr(7.5ton C/ha/yr-14.0ton C/ha/yr) respectively, which showed the highest values among the woody plant communities reported in the Korea. It means that planting Salix in the flood plain of the river is the best way to remove carbon dioxides. The faster leaf decomposition occurred around, under and the herb of Salix community in order. Leaf decomposition rate of Salix was higher than that of mesophytes, but lower than that of hydrophytes.

  • MAPP a computer program provides an estimate of the annual production of macroalgae. The calculation of the annual production is based on the Photosynthesis-Irradiance relationship under different temperature conditions and annual changes of algal biomass. The production in a given time was obtained from the multiplication of biomass by the production rate measured by in situ experiments. The annual production, $P_{yr}$, is calculated from $P_{yr}{\;}={\;}{\int}B_t{\cdot}P_r{\;}dt$, where, $P_t$ = f(T,L)and T, L = f(t). The program is written in Pascal language to facilitate the usage with personal computers. The data of the photosynthetic rates and biomass of Sargassum confusum measured at Ohori, on the east coast of Korea, was used for an example.

  • Net community production (NCP), defined as the difference between net primary production and respiration of heterotrophs, has been used as a measure of oceanic biological carbon pump. This paper summarizes the theoretical background and experimental methods for the estimation of NCP based on $O_2/Ar$ measurements ($O_2/Ar-NCP$). The high frequency measurements of $O_2/Ar-NCP$ (<1 min) is a significant enhancement over the conventional measures of biological pump, such as new production and export production. This paper also introduces some of important works as to the comparison between $O_2/Ar-NCP$ and other measures of biological pump, the distributions of $O_2/Ar-NCP$ in the oceans, and the correlation of $O_2/Ar-NCP$ with various oceanic parameters, including community structures.

  • Recently, with the development of IoT technology, the number of farms using smart farms is increasing. Smart farms monitor the environment and optimise internal environment automatically to improve crop yield and quality. For optimized crop cultivation, researches on predict crop productivity are actively studied, by using collected agricultural digital data. However, most of the existing studies are based on statistical models based on existing statistical data, and thus there is a problem with low prediction accuracy. In this paper, we use various predition models for predicting the production and sales profits, and compare the performance results through models by using the agricultural digital data collected in the facility horticultural smart farm. The models that compared the performance are multiple linear regression, support vector machine, artificial neural network, recurrent neural network, LSTM, and ConvLSTM. As a result of performance comparison, ConvLSTM showed the best performance in R2 value and RMSE value.

  • In this study, we investigated the applicability and optimal operating strategy of a closed-loop pressure retarded membrane distillation (PRMD) for brackish water desalination. For effective operation with net power generation, high temperature of heat source over 90 ℃ and feed flow rate at 0.6 kg/s are recommended. At 3 g/L of feed concentration, the average permeate flux and net energy density showed 8.04 kg/m2/hr and 2.56 W/m2, respectively. The average permeate flux and net energy density were almost constant in the range of feed concentration from 1 to 3 g/L. Compared to the case with seawater feed, the PRMD with brackish water feed showed higher average permeate flux and net energy density. Thus, PRMD application using brackish water feed can be more effective than that using seawater feed in terms of power generation.

  • K company produces semiconductor package products under the make-to-order policy to supply for domestic and foreign semiconductor manufacturing companies. Its production process is a machine-paced assembly line type, which consists of die sawing, assembly, and test. This paper suggests three plans to increase process throughput based on the process analysis of K company and evaluates them via a simulation model using a real data collected. The three plans are line balancing by adding machines to the bottleneck process, product group scheduling, and reallocation of the operators in non-bottleneck processes. The evaluation result shows the highest daily throughput increase of 17.3% with an effect of 2.8% reduction of due date violation when the three plans are applied together. Payback period for the mixed application of the three plans is obtained as 1.37 years.

  • Various studies to enhance the accuracy of rice production forecasting are focused on improving the accuracy of the models. In contrast, there is a relative lack of research regarding the data itself, which the prediction models are applied to. When applying the same dependent variable and prediction model to two different sets of rice production data composed of distinct features, discrepancies in results can occur. It is challenging to determine which dataset yields superior results under such circumstances. To address this issue, by identifying potential influential features within the data before applying the prediction model and centering the modeling around these, it is possible to achieve stable prediction results regardless of the composition of the data. In this study, we propose a method to adjust the composition of the data's features in order to select optimal base variables, aiding in achieving stable and consistent predictions for rice production. This method makes use of the Korea Meteorological Administration's ASOS data. The findings of this study are expected to make a substantial contribution towards enhancing the utility of performance evaluations in future research endeavors.

  • We analyzed the effects of spatio-temporal variation in the leaf production of oaks on the density and species richness of herbivores, as well as the consumption by herbivores in the east coastal region of Korea, which is an area that has been damaged by forest fires. The main herbivore that feeds on oak leaves was moth larvae. In mid-August the insect larvae showed the highest density and species richness. Approximately 60.5% of total plant-eating insect larvae were present from August to September 2011. Oak leaf production was at its peak from July to August, and the peak damage caused by herbivores was from August to September. Depending on the investigation timing and site of the survey, oak leaf production, larval densities, and species richness showed large variations. The average production of oak leaves between July and August was estimated to be $0.96ton\;ha^{-1}$. The production of oak leaves during this period also showed spatial variations ranging from 0.34 to $1.89ton\;ha^{-1}$. In August, the consumption of oak leaves by the herbivores showed spatial variations ranging from 0.15 to $1.51ton\;ha^{-1}$. Where oak leaves had a higher yield, they tended to increase in density and species richness of the herbivores. As the production of oak leaves increased, so did the overall consumption and consumption rate by the herbivores. This means that the production of oak leaves is highly related to time and space, and there is a concentration response in which the new individuals gather. Research into the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of the food sources and their effects on the higher levels of the food web can help us quantitatively understand and evaluate the structure and functions of the burnt ecosystem that is caused by forest fires.
