Study on Infrared Thermography (적외석 체열촬영에 관한 고찰)

  • Thermography is a diagnostic procedures that measures infrared energy emitted by the skin. Thermography detects body temperature change which are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. It does show the thermal dysfunction that correlates closely with pain syndromes as well as normalization when the healing process takes place. Experienced clinical interpretation of the thermal pattern is necessary to diagnose and establish causation. Thermography is useful in the diagnosis of painful conditions such as herniated disc diseases, myofascial syndrome, myositis, musculoligamentous injury, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, athretic injuries, vascular diseases, arthritis, inflammation and breast tumors.

  • 우울증은 동기, 의욕, 관심, 주의력, 정신기능 및 식욕의 감소를 특징으로 하는 일종의 기분 장애이다. 우울증은 유전적, 내분비 및 환경적 스트레스를 포함한 다양한 원인에 의해 발생하지만 가벼운 우울증은 식이요법으로 개선되는 것으로 보고되었다. 따라서 우울증 환자를 치료하기 위해서는 기능성 및 영양 보충제를 포함한 다양한 식품 공급원이 필요하다. 치즈에는 숙주 건강에 유익한 영향을 미치는 생리 활성 펩타이드가 포함되어 있다. 특히 저지(Jersey) 우유는 홀스타인(Holstein) 우유보다 고형분 함량이 높은 것으로 보고되었다. 이 연구는 저지(Jersey) 와 홀스타인(Holstein) 우유의 가우다 치즈(Gouda cheese)가 만성 스트레스(CUMS, chronic unpredictable mild stress)에 미치는 영향을 조사했다. 치즈를 먹인 만성 스트레스 마우스 모델의 개선적 변화는 젖소 종에 관계없이 통계적으로 유의미하게 효과적으로 나타났다. 흥미롭게도 PCR을 통한 분변 미생물 균총 분석에서 저지 치즈를 섭취함으로써 Bacteroidetes가 증가하고 Firmicutes가 유의적으로 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 종합하면, 본 연구는 치즈 섭취가 스트레스 개선 작용이 있음을 제시하며, 특히 장내 미생물 균총의 유익한 방향으로의 변화가 관찰되는데, 치즈의 생리활성물질 혹은 장내미생물 균총의 대사물질들이 이러한 행동·정신학적 개선 작용과의 연관성이 있음을 시사한다.

Optimization of Protocol for Injection of Iodinated Contrast Medium in Pediatric Thoracic CT Examination (소아 흉부 CT검사에서 조영제 주입에 관한 프로토콜의 최적화)

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a physiological injection protocol according to body weight, in order to minimize amount of contrast medium and optimize contrast enhancement in pediatric patients performing thoracic CT examinations. The 80 pediatric patients under the age of 10 were studied. Intravenous contrast material containing 300 mgI/ml was used. The group A injected with a capacity of 1.5 times its weight, and groups B, C and D added 5 to 15 ml of normal saline with a 10% decrease in each. The physiologic model which can be calculated by weight about amount of injection of contrast medium and normal saline, flow rate and delay time were applied. To assess image quality, measured average HU value and SNR of superior vena cava, pulmonary artery, ascending and descending aorta, right and left atrium, right and left ventricle. CT numbers of subclavian vein and superior vena cava were compared to identify the effects of reducing artifacts due to normal saline. Comparing SNR according to the contrast medium injection protocol, significant differences were found in superior vena cava and pulmonary artery, descending aorta, right and left ventricle, and CT numbers showed significant differences in all organs. In particular, B group with a 10% decrease in contrast medium and an additional injection of saline showed a low degree of contrast enhancement in groups with a decrease of more than 20%. In addition, the group injected with normal saline greatly reduced contrast enhancement of subclavian vein and superior vena cava, and the beam hardening artifact by contrast medium was significantly attenuated. In conclusion, the application of physiological protocol for injection of contrast medium in pediatric thoracic CT examinations was able to reduce artifacts by contrast medium, prevent unnecessary use of contrast medium and improve the effect of contrast enhancement.

  • In order to assess electrophysiological responses of fish, a recording of Electroretinogram (ERG) was made on the dark-adapted eyes of anesthetized jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus in the strobe-flash frequency range of 1.7~25 Hz and in the intensity range of 56~415 lx.s. The amplitude change of the ERG is highest at the moment when the strobe light is irradiated and becomes weakest soon after, then gradually increases and becomes stable. The amplitude of the ERG by strobe flash frequencies looked stable tendency after about 12~17 minutes elapsed. During the test duration of 30 minutes, the maximum of amplitude change and stimulation amount over all the tested frequencies was found at 10 Hz. The reduction of the flash intensity caused the decrease in the amplitude and stimulation amount.

  • Injury of articular cartilage can be classified into acute injury and chronic degenerative osteoarthritis Acute mechanical trauma on articular cartilage causes injuries that are divided into three distinct types based on the depth of injury: microdamage, chondral fracture, osteochondral fracture and each type has different potential of healing response and long-term prognosis. Articular cartilage undergoes degradation in response to a number of stimuli and eventually degenerative osteoarthritic changes will progress. The extent of initial injury to the articular cartilage is the most important factor affecting the long-term outcome of the healing response and other variables such as the size of lesion, site, age, activity level, obesity, limb alignment are also important factors. In this review, the pathophysiology that occurs within articular cartilage after different injuries and the effect of nonsurgical treatment mainly in physicochemical aspect and biological aspect will be discussed.

Effects on Lethal Concentration 50%, Hematological Parameters and Plasma Components of Mirror carp, Cyprinus carpio nudus Exposed to Waterborne Nitrate (수인성 질산 급성 노출에 의한 향어, Cyprinus carpio nudus의 반수치사농도, 혈액학적 성상 및 혈장성분에 미치는 독성 영향)

  • To determine the toxic effects of the mirror carp, Cyprinus carpio nudus on waterborne nitric acid exposure, they were exposed to waterborne nitric acid at 0, 4, 20, 100, 500, and 2,500 mg NO3-/L for 96 h. The semi-lethal concentration (LC50) of the scented fish by 96 hours of acute exposure to nitric acid was 1,433.54 mg NO3-/L. The physiological changes of waterborne nitric acid exposure on mirror carp were evaluated through hematologic properties, and RBC count showed a significantly decreased (p < 0.05). The change in the ion control ability of the mirror carp according to exposure to waterborne nitric acid was evaluated through the plasma inorganic component, and calcium and magnesium were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in the plasma inorganic component. The health and stress status of the mirror carp due to exposure to waterborne nitric acid were evaluated through plasma organic ingredients, and the plasma organic component glucose showed a significantly increase (p < 0.05). Changes in liver damage and enzyme activity due to waterborne nitric acid exposure were evaluated through plasma enzyme components, the enzymatic activities of plasma AST, ALT, and ALP were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) in high levels of waterborne nitric acid exposure. The results of the present study suggest that waterborne nitric acid exposure to C. carpio nudus can toxicly affect survival, hematologic properties, and plasma components.

Changes of Nutritional Characteristics and Serum Cholesterol in Rats by the Intake of Dietary Fiber Isolated from Ascidian (Halocynthia roretzi) Tunic (우렁쉥이 껍질로부터 정제한 식이섬유 급여 Rat의 영양학적 특성 및 혈청지질함량의 변화)

  • The effects of dietary fiber isolated from ascidian (Halocynthia roretzi) tunic on the changes of weight, total gut transit time, serum cholesterol and glucose level were investigated in rats. Twenty four male rats were divided into 4 groups and were fed a control diet and three fiber supplemented diets with 5,10 and 20% of ascidian insoluble cellulose for 4 weeks, respectively. Food intake was not affected by the supplemented diet of ascidian cellulose but the body weight gain and food efficiency ratio were reduced in proportion to a feeding amount of ascidian cellulose. The fecal output and fecal water content were increased, gut transit time was shortened, and length of gut was elongated in all dietary fiber groups. Serum cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, neutral lipid, phospho-lipid and serum glucose concentrations were lowered and HDL-cholesterol was increased in rats fed the ascidian insoluble cellulose diet in proportion to a feeding amount of ascidian cellulose.

  • Although physiological and ecological characteristics of cyanobacteria have been studied extensively for decades, unknown areas still remain greater than the already known. Recently, the development of omics techniques based on molecular biology has made it possible to view the ecosystem from a new and holistic perspective. The molecular mechanism of toxin production is being widely investigated, by comparative genomics and the transcriptomic studies. Biological interaction between bacteria and cyanobacteria is also explored: how their interactions and genetic biodiversity change depending on seasons and environmental factors, and how these interactions finally affect each component of ecosystem. Bioinformatics techniques have combined with ecoinformatics and omics data, enabling us to understand the underlying complex mechanisms of ecosystems. Particularly omics started to provide a whole picture of biological responses, occurring from all layers of hierarchical processes from DNA to metabolites. The expectation is growing further that algal blooms could be controlled more effectively in the near future. And an important insight for the successful bloom control would come from a novel blueprint drawn by omics studies.

  • This study investigated that exposure of male mice to estrogen receptor $\alpha$-selective agonist, 4,4',4"-(4-propyl-[1H]-pyrazole-1,3,5-triyl)tris-phenol (PPT) induce morphological changes of accessory genital glands. The male reproductive organs were fixed and processed for light microscopy. The PPT induced decreases of ventral prostates, seminal vesicles and preputial glands weights with experimental time. The glandular lumen of ventral prostate was atrophied compared with control group. Type of epithelial tissues in the prostate was changed from simple columnar epithelium to stratified cuboidal or squamous epithelium. Treated group with the agonist showed that increased connective tissue underlying epithelium in the prostate and seminal vesicle. Especially, the glandular lumen of the seminal vesicle was contracted when PPT-treated animals were compared with control group. Secretion cells of preputial gland were smaller than that of control group. On week 8, PPT treatment caused decrease of epithelial cell height lining the lumen of preputial gland. These results provide information useful in researching the physiological function of estrogen mediated by estrogen receptor $\alpha$ in male accessory genital gland.

Electrophysiological Analysis in Diabetic Patients with Abnormal Sensation and Pain (이상감각과 통증을 호소하는 당뇨병 환자의 전기생리학적 특징 분석)

  • Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus can complain of abnormal sensation and pain which derived from the peripheral nerve damage. Various words used to be describe abnormal sense and pain, such as sharp, hot, dull, cold, sensitive, and itch. To diagnose diabetic peripheral neuropathy, several screening instruments (Neuropathic Pain Scale, NPS; Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instruments, MNSI) and electrophysiological study can be used. In this study, we aim to analyze and compare the clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of 11 patients with diabetes mellitus and abnormal sense/pain (Disease Group, DG) and 10 patients with diabetes mellitus and normal sense (Control Group, CG). In addition, we aim to reveal correlation between NPS subscore and electrophysiological parameters. As a result, the scores of NPS and MNSI in DG were significantly higher. In nerve conduction study, median motor nerve and peroneal nerve showed significant functional change. Also, median motor nerve, posterior tibial nerve and sural nerve showed negative correlation as NPS subscore increased. These results mean increased pain can be associated with abnormal nerve function. It needs to be further explored for larger size of subjects to get confirmative results.
