  • We study low-complexity graph sampling which selects a subset of nodes from graph nodes so as to reconstruct the original signal from the sampled one. To achieve complexity reduction, we propose a graph sampling algorithm with thresholding which selects a node with a cost lower than a given threshold at each step without fully searching all of the remaining nodes to find one with the minimum cost. Since it is important to find the threshold as close to a minimum cost as possible to avoid degradation of the reconstruction performance, we present a mathematical expression to compute the threshold at each step. We investigate the performance of the different sampling methods for various graphs, showing that the proposed algorithm runs 1.3 times faster than the previous method while maintaining the reconstruction performance.

  • Borehole radar is a radar used for underground resources and geological exploration purposes. It needs a high-speed sampler to transmit electromagnetic waves with a pulse width of several ns and to receive reflected waves of several tens to several hundreds of MHz reflected from the object to be surveyed. ETS (Equivalent-Time Sampling), which can achieve sampling performance of several GHz with a sampling frequency of several tens of MHz, is suitable for use as a sampler of a borehole radar receiver. In this paper, we propose a method to control the sampling clock delay, which is the most important factor in ETS sampler design, using four clocks with phase difference of $90^{\circ}$ for one clock source. The proposed method can reduce the time required to acquire the data within the set interval by 1/25 than the conventional method using the delay generator. When the implemented sampler is applied to the receiver of existing borehole radar, it is possible to accumulate 58 additional times due to the shortened sampling time. In addition, by using one delay control logic compared with the conventional method using several sampling clock delay control logic in order to satisfy the target sampling range, it is possible to omit the correction process which was necessary in the past. As a result, the structure of the system can be simplified and a uniform sampler can be realized.

  • Background subtraction is one of the key techniques for automatic video content analysis, especially in the tasks of visual detection and tracking of moving object. In this paper, we present a new sample-based technique for background extraction that provides background image as well as background model. To handle both high-frequency and low-frequency events at the same time, multiple interval background models are adopted. The main innovation concerns the use of a confidence factor to select the best model from the multiple interval background models. To our knowledge, it is the first time that a confidence factor is used for merging several background models in the field of background extraction. Experimental results revealed that our approach based on multiple interval sampling works well in complicated situations containing various speed moving objects with environmental changes.

  • We address the sampling set selection problem for arbitrary graph signals such that the original graph signal is reconstructed from the signal values on the nodes in the sampling set. We introduce a variation difference as a new indirect metric that measures the error of signal variations caused by sampling process without resorting to the eigen-decomposition which requires a huge computational cost. Instead of directly minimizing the reconstruction error, we propose a simple and fast greedy selection algorithm that minimizes the variation differences at each iteration and justify the proposed reasoning by showing that the principle used in the proposed process is similar to that in the previous novel technique. We run experiments to show that the proposed method yields a competitive reconstruction performance with a substantially reduced complexity for various graphs as compared with the previous selection methods.

  • This paper presents a novel on-line trajectory optimization framework based on automatic time warping, which performs the time warping of a reference motion while optimizing character motion control. Unlike existing physics-based character animation methods where sampling times for a reference motion are uniform or fixed during optimization in general, our method considers the change of sampling times on top of the dynamics of character motion in the same optimization, which allows the character to effectively respond to external pushes with optimal time warping. In order to do so, we formulate an optimal control problem which takes into account both the full-body dynamics and the change of sampling time for a reference motion, and present a model predictive control framework that produces an optimal control policy for character motion and sampling time by repeatedly solving the problem for a fixed-span time window while shifting it along the time axis. Our experimental results show the robustness of our framework to external perturbations and the effectiveness on rhythmic motion synthesis in accordance with a given piece of background music.

  • Ray tracing-based rendering creates by far more realistic images than the traditional rasterization-based rendering. However, it is still burdensome when implemented for a Head-Mounted Display (HMD) system that demands a wide field of view and a high display refresh rate. Furthermore, for presenting high-quality images on the HMD screen, a sufficient number of ray sampling should be carried out per pixel to alleviate visually annoying spatial and temporal aliases. In this paper, we extend the recent selective foveated ray tracing technique by Kim et al. [1], and propose an improved real-time rendering technique that realizes the rendering effect of the classic Whitted-style ray tracing on the HMD system. In particular, by combining the ray tracing hardware-based acceleration technique and time-constrained rendering scheme, we show that fast HMD ray tracing is possible that is well suited to human visual systems.

  • In order to quantify nonpoint source pollution, it was proposed to sample at regular intervals of 1 hour for the first 24 hours of storm runoff process by National Institute of Environmental Research for the mixed landuse watershed. However, high frequency sampling requires intensive laboratory analysis and labor costs. In order to investigate the effect of longer sampling interval on the load estimation compared to the 1 hour sampling method, analysis was conducted using monitoring data from rural subwatershed, urban subwatershed, and outlet of the Pungyeongjeongcheon watershed. Statistical analysis revealed that mean of load estimation was not significantly different up to 4 hour sampling frequency. However, 3 hour sampling interval was found to be appropriate for the BOD and TP when it is judged that 10% or less of the difference in loading amount between the 1 hour and other sampling interval is reasonable. The results of this study can be used to conduct an effective monitoring system.

  • Monte Carlo ray tracing has been widely used for simulating a diverse set of photo-realistic effects. However, this technique typically produces noise when insufficient numbers of samples are used. As the number of samples allocated per pixel is increased, the rendered images converge. However, this approach of generating sufficient numbers of samples, requires prohibitive rendering time. To solve this problem, image filtering can be applied to rendered images, by filtering the noisy image rendered using low sample counts and acquiring smoothed images, instead of naively generating additional rays. In this paper, we proposed a Stein's Unbiased Risk Estimator (SURE) based $\grave{A}$-Trous wavelet to filter the noise in rendered images in a near-interactive rate. Based on SURE, we can estimate filtering errors associated with $\grave{A}$-Trous wavelet, and identify wavelet coefficients reducing filtering errors. Our approach showed improvement, up to 6:1, over the original $\grave{A}$-Trous filter on various regions in the image, while maintaining a minor computational overhead. We have integrated our propsed filtering method with the recent interactive ray tracing system, Embree, and demonstrated its benefits.

  • There are many irregularly-sampled time series in the manufacturing data which are collected from manufacturing facilities by short intervals. Those time series often have large variance. In this paper, we propose irregularly-sampled time series correction method based on simple moving average. This method corrects time intervals between neighboring values in time series regularly and reduces the variance of the values at the same time. We examine that this method improves performance of anomaly detection in manufacturing facility.
