  • A general and systematic method of organizing two-dimensional flexible cellular array which is capable of reclizing arbitrary combinational switching function is developed. A set of n functions of n variables is transformed to revalued functions of one variable. This set of functions form a semigroup under the normal operation which is defined in this paper. A systematic method of generating any functions using three base functions is presented. Three basic networks which are capable of realizing three base functions are designed using only one one-dimensional array. The algorithm is presented for lealizing arbitrary combinational switching functions by organizing this basic array in two.dimensional cellular array and by appropriately setting the parameters or the edge of the array.

  • The estimation of the angular rate of a satellite has been discussed. A nonlinear observer has been proposed based on the state-dependent Riccati equation method. A sufficient stability condition for the convergence of estimation error has been presented. This condition is related to a state-dependent algebraic Riccati equation. It has been derived by transforming nonlinear error dynamics into a Lipschitz nonlinearity. An observer gain is obtained from this condition. Numerical simulations are presented to verify the proposed method.

  • We analyze the robustness of the existing predictor feedback controller for discrete-time linear systems with constant input delays against the structured model uncertainty. By modeling the constant input delay with a first-order PdE (Partial difference Equation), we replace the input delay with the PdE states. By applying a backstepping transformation, we build a target system that enables to construct an explicit Lyapunov function. Constructing the explicit Lyapunov function that covers the entire state variables, we prove the existence of an allowable maximum size of the structured model uncertainty to maintain stability and establish the robustness of the predictor feedback controller. The numerical example demonstrates that the stability of closed-loop system is maintained in the presence of the structured model uncertainty, and verifies the robustness of the predictor feedback controller.

  • In this paper, we present an approach for facial expression recognition using Active Shape Models(ASM) and a state-based model in image sequences. Given an image frame, we use ASM to obtain the shape parameter vector of the model while we locate facial feature points. Then, we can obtain the shape parameter vector set for all the frames of an image sequence. This vector set is converted into a state vector which is one of the three states by the state-based model. In the classification step, we use the k-NN with the proposed similarity measure that is motivated on the observation that the variation-regions of an expression sequence are different from those of other expression sequences. In the experiment with the public database KCFD, we demonstrate that the proposed measure slightly outperforms the binary measure in which the recognition performance of the k-NN with the proposed measure and the existing binary measure show 89.1% and 86.2% respectively when k is 1.

  • The effects of Asaddition in amorphous selenium(a-Se) films for digital X-ray conversion material have been studied using the moving photocarrier grating(MPG) technique. This method utilizes the moving interference pattern generated by the superposition of the two frequency shifted laser beams for the illumination of the sample. This moving intensity grating induces a short circuit current, j$_{sc}$ in a-Se:As film. The transport parameters of the sample are extracted from the grating-velocity dependent short circuit current induced in the sample along the modulation direction. The electron and hole mobility, and recombination lifetime of a-Se films with arsenic(As) additions have been obtained. We have found an Increase in hole drift mobility and recombination lifetime, especially when 0.3% As is added into a-Se film, whereas electron mobility decreases with As addition due to the defect density. The transport properties for As doped a-Se films obtained by using MPG technique have been compared with X-ray sensitivity for a-Se:As device. The fabricated a-Se(0.3% As) device film exhibited the highest X-ray sensitivity out of 5 samples.

  • Mechanical structures are composed of substructures connected by joints and boundary elements. While the finite element representation of plain substructures is well developed and reliable, joints have a lot of uncertainties in being accurately modelled and affect dynamic behavior of a total system. In order to improve the accuracy of a finite element model, a new method is proposed, in which reduced finite element model is combined with a system identification technique. After substructures except joints are modelled with finite element method and joint properties are represented by parameter states, non-linear state equation is derived in which parameter states are multiplied by physical states such as displacements and velocities. So the joint parameter identification is transformed into non-linear state estimation problem. The methods are tested and discussed numerically and the feasibility for physical application has been demonstrated through two example structures.

  • Video segmentation is a fundamental task in video indexing and it includes two kinds of shot change detections such as the abrupt transition and the gradual transition. The abrupt shot boundaries are detected by computing the image-based distance between adjacent frames and comparing this distance with a pre-determined threshold value. However, the gradual shot boundaries are difficult to detect with this approach. To overcome this difficulty, we propose the method that detects gradual transition in the MPEG compressed video using the HMM (Hidden Markov Model). We take two different HMMs such as a discrete HMM and a continuous HMM with a Gaussian mixture model. As image features for HMM's observations, we use two distinct features such as the difference of histogram of DC images between two adjacent frames and the difference of each individual macroblock's deviations at the corresponding macroblock's between two adjacent frames, where deviation means an arithmetic difference of each macroblock's DC value from the mean of DC values in the given frame. Furthermore, we obtain the DC sequences of P and B frame by the first order approximation for a fast and effective computation. Experiment results show that we obtain the best detection and classification performance of gradual transitions when a continuous HMM with one Gaussian model is taken and two image features are used together.

  • The transient response of a three-dimensional straight fin of constant cross sectional area and perimeter with unequal top, bottom, left, right and tip surface convection coefficients is analyzed using separation variables and Laplace transforms when the fin base is subjected to a step change in temperature. The three-dimensional effects of fin dimensions and unequal fin surface convection coefficients on the fin performance which is expressed in terms of the heat flowrates through the fin base are investigated, and errors in one-dimensions and unequal fin surface coefficients. Typical results are represented in tabular and graphical forms.

  • In this study, we have evaluated the effect of amplitude and frequency perturbation of EGG signal for single vowels associated with laryngeal pathology. The normal EGG signal was properly characterized by an autoregressive model which has an optimal order of ninth using the parametric method. This can be analyzed by determining the transfer function. Perturbations in the fundamental pitch and in the peak amplitude of EGG signal measured with a four-electrode system using the modulation/demodulation techniques were investigated for the purpose of developing a decision criteria for the laryngeal function analysis. The abnormal EGG signal has nonperiodic and unstable characteristics. It can be discriminated by the calculation of opening and closing time of glottis using the EGG signal. In case of normal and abnormal subjects, m$\pm$0.5*sd was discriminating line for frequency perturbation and m$\pm$2*sd for normal amplitude perturbations, respectively. Also, The normal and abnormal cases of the subjects can be discriminated effectively using the pattern of attractor derived with Hilbert transform of EGG signal.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for obtaining 2-state switching failure function and a terminal pair reliability evaluation method in a communication network are proposed. The communication network is modeled by a graph. By using the sequence of matrix transformations for the graph, minimal cut-set matrix representing all minimal cut-sets which completely interrupt the communication path is determined and 2-state switching failure function is then obtained from the minimal cut-set matrix. The terminal pari reliability of the communication network is evaluated by corresponding the random variables to 2-state switching failure function. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the algorithm. A computer program evaluating the terminal pair reliability in a complex and large network has also been developed.
