This paper proposes a novel normalization scheme in the state metric calculation unit for the Block-wise MAP Turbo decoder. The proposed scheme subtracts one of four metrics from the state metrics in a trellis stage and shifts, if necessary, those metrics for normalization. The proposed architecture can reduce power consumption and memory requirement by reducing the number of the state metrics by one in a trellis stage in the Block-wise MAP decoder which requires an intensive state metric calculations. Simulation results show that dynamic power has been reduced by 17.9% and area has been reduced by 6.6% in the Turbo decoder employing the proposed normalization scheme, when compared to the conventional Block-wise MAP Turbo decoders.

The turbulent mixing of a kerosene/liquid oxygen coaxial swirl injector under supercritical pressures have been numerically investigated. Kerosene surrogate models are proposed for the kerosene thermodynamic properties. Turbulent numerical model is based on LES(Large Eddy Simulation) with real-fluid transport and thermodynamics over the entire pressure range; Soave modification of Redlich-Kwong equation of state, Chung's model for viscosity/conductivity, and Fuller's theorem for diffusivity to take account Takahashi's compressible effect. The effect of operating pressure on thermodynamic properties and mixing dynamics inside an injector and a combustion chamber are investigated. Power spectral densities of pressure fluctuations in the injector under various chamber pressure are analyzed.

In general, various modeling and estimation techniques have been proposed to extract the tropospheric and ionospheric delays from the GPS CORS. In this study, Kalman filter approach is adopted to estimate the tropospheric and ionospheric delays and the proper modeling for the state vector and the variance-covariance matrix for the process noises are performed. The coordinates of reference stations and the zenith wet delays are estimated with the assumption of random walk stochastic process. Also, the first-order Gauss-Markov stochastic process is applied to compute the ionospheric effects. For the evaluation of the proposed modeling technique, Kalman filter algorithm is implemented and the numerical test is performed with the CORS data. The results show that the atmospheric effects can be estimated successfully and, as a consequence, can be used for the generation of VRS data.
Hidden Markov Models (HMM's) with explicit state duration density (HMM/SD) can represent the time-varying characteristics of speech signals more accurately. However, such an advantage is reduced in relatively smooth state duration densities or ling bounded duration. To solve this problem, we propose HMM's with global path constraint (HMM/GPC) where the transition between states occur only within prescribed time slots. HMM/GPC explicitly limits state durations and accurately describes the temproal structure of speech simply and efficiently. HMM's formed by combining HMM/GPC with HMM/SD are also presented (HMM/SD+GPC) and performances are compared. HMM/GPC can be implemented with slight modifications to the conventional Viterbi algorithm. HMM/GPC and HMM/SD_GPC not only show superior performance than the conventional HMM and HMM/SD but also require much less computation. In the speaket independent isolated word recognition experiments, the minimum recognition eror rate of HMM/GPC(1.6%) is 1.1% lower than the conventional HMM's and the required computation decreased about 57%.

A constitutive model, which can simulate the effect of principal stress rotation associated with direct simple shear test, is proposed in this study. The model is based on two mobilized planes. The plastic strains occur from the two mobilized planes, and depend on stress state, and they are added. The first plane is a plane of maximum shear stress, which rotates about the horizontal axis, and the second plane is a horizontal plane which is spatially fixed. The second plane is used to consider the effect of principal stress rotation on simple shear tests under different stress states. The soil skeleton behavior observed in drained simple shear tests is captured in the model. This constitutive model is incorporated into the dynamic coupled stress-flow finite difference program FLAC. The model is first calibrated with drained simple shear tests on loose Fraser River sand. The measured shear stress and volume change are partially induced by principal stress rotation and compared with model calculations. The model is verified by comparing predicted and measured settlements due to rigid footing resting on loose sands. Settlements predicted by the proposed model were very similar to measured settlements. Mohr-Coulomb model can not consider the effect of principal stress rotation and its prediction was only 20% of measured settlements.

Many engineering problems often require the large amount of computing resources for iterative simulations of problems treating many parameters and input files. In order to overcome the situation, this paper proposes an e-Science based computational system. The system exploits the Grid computing technology to establish an integrated web service environment which supports distributed high throughput computational simulations and remote executions. The proposed system provides an easy-to-use parametric study service where a computational service includes real time monitoring. To verify usability of the proposed system, two kinds of applications were introduced. The first application is an Aerospace Integrated Research System (e-AIRS). The e-AIRS adapts the proposed computational system to solve CFD problems. The second one is design and optimization of protein 3-dimensional structures in structural biology.
