  • The properties, land use and genesis of the Jang-weon series, Planosol-like soils, distributed in Cheong-do area were investigated. Planosol-like soils in Korea have been believed unsuitable for perennial crops but 34.6% (594ha) of the Jang-weon soils in Cheongdo-gun are used for perennial crops such as apples, persimmons, peaches, mulberry etc. With productivity more or less equal to alluvial soils. The reason for high productivity and a working hypothesis for the genesis of the fragipan is suggested with discussion.

  • Experiments were carried out to make clear the relationships among some morphological characters of four-varieties of mulberry trees. Simple correlation coefficients and particial correlation coefficients were calcultated among the characters, namely branch length, branch diameter, leaf number per branch, leaf area per branch, node number per branch, total branch wt. branch weight except leaves and leaf weight per branch of the mulberry trees. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Variances of the characters and covariances between the each characters are shown in table 1, and simple correlation coefficients among various characters are shown in table 2. It was observed that there were close relationships between yield (leaf weight) and branch length, branch diameter, leaf number per branch, leaf are per branch, node number per branch, total branch weight and branch weight except leaves, respectively. 2. Partial correlation coefficients among some characters are shown in table 3. From this table, it was also observed that leaf yield of mulberry trees and leaf area are more closely related more than leaf yield and the other characters of mulberry trees in four different varieties. From the experimental studies, it was recognized that the four characters, namely branch length, branch diameter, leaf number and leaf area, should be very useful characters in the estimation of mulberry leaf yield as they could be measured. or counted easily before harvest of mulberry leaves, and are affected more in mulberry 1eaf yields than the other characters.

  • A 38-year-old woman presented with facial edema with neck vein engorgement for about 45 days. Chest roentgenography showed bulging soft tissue opacities in the right superoanterior mediastinum and a lobulated intraluminal mass was noted in the superior vena cava on the venacavogram. The superior vena cava was incised and the tumor located from the junction of the superior vena cava and internal jugular vein to the right atrial inlet was excised. Grossly, the tumor was myxoid or gelatinous in appearance. A combination of microscopic and immunohistochemical features showed myxoid leiomyosarcoma arising from the wall of the superior vena cava.

  • This review describes several kinds of emulsification methods for nanoemulsions and the application of nanoemulsions. Nanoemulsion droplet sizes fall typically in the range of 20 ~200 nm and show narrow size distributions. Although most of the publications on either oil-in-water (O/W) or water-in-oil (W/O) nanoemulsions have reported their formation by dispersion or high-energy emulsification methods, an increased interest is observed in the study of nano-emulsion formation by condensation or low-energy emulsification methods based on the phase transitions that take place during the emulsification process. Phase behaviour studies have shown that the size of the droplets is governed by the surfactant phase structure (bicontinuous microemulsion or lamellar) at the inversion point induced by either temperature or composition. Studies on nanoemulsion formation by the phase inversion temperature (PIT) method have shown a relation between minimum droplet size and complete solubilization of the oil in a microemulsion bicontinuous phase independently of whether the initial phase equilibrium is single or multiphase. Due to their small droplet size nanoemulsions possess stability against sedimentation or creaming with Ostwald ripening forming the main mechanism of nanoemulsion breakdown. An application of nanoemulsions is the preparation of nanoparticles using a polymerizable monomer as the disperse phase where nanoemulsion droplets act as nanoreactors, cosmetics and controlled drug delivery. In this review, we mainly focus on the cosmetics.

  • Phase equilibrium and dynamic behavior studies were performed in systems containing $C_{12}E_5$ nonionic surfactant solution and nonpolar hydrocarbon oil. The phase behavior result showed an oil-in-water(O/W) microemulsion(${\mu}E$) in equilibrium with excess oil phase at low temperatures and a water-in-oil(W/O) ${\mu}E$ in equilibrium with excess water phase at high temperatures. For intermediate temperatures a 3 phase region containing excess water, excess oil, and a middle-phase microemulsion was observed and the transition temperature was found to increase with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil. Dynamic behavior at low temperatures showed that an oil drop size decreased linearly with time due to solubilization into micelles and the solubilization rate decreased with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil. On the other hand, both spontaneous emulsification of water into oil phase and expansion of oil drop with time were observed because of diffusion of surfactant and water into oil phase. Under conditions of a 3 phase region including a middle-phase ${\mu}E$, both rapid solubilization and emulsification of oil into aqueous surfactant solution were found mainly due to the existence of ultra-low interfacial tension. Interfacial tensions were measured as a function of time for n-decane oil drops brought into contact with 1 wt% surfactant solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Both equilibrium interfacial tension and equilibration time were found to increase with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil.

  • Single crystals, SbSI : V, SbSeI : V, BiSI : V, BiSeI : V, SbSI : Cr, SbSeI : Cr, BiSI : Cr, BiSeI : Cr, SbSI : Ni, SbSeI : Ni, BiSI : Ni, and BiSeI : Ni were grown by the vertical Bridgman method. It is found that the grown single crystals have an orthorhombic structure and the indirect optical transitions. The temperature dependence of energy gap shows the two reflection point related with the phase transitions and is well fitted with Varshni equation in the continuous region. The optical absorption peaks due to the doped impurities (V, Cr and Ni) are respectively attributed to the electron transitions between the split energy levels of $V^{+2}$, $Cr^{+2}$ and $Ni^{+2}$ ions sited at $T_d$ symmetry of the host lattice.

  • The survey was carried out in the Goryeong area in Gyeongbug province to point out the hinderances of grave increment on the development of hilly to mountainous area and to give basic data to improve the entombment custom. The total extent of gravesite in the area was mapped 148ha which were 0.4% of total area and 1.8% of arableland respectively. Scattering of graves might be hindered utilization of the mountainous area. Out of the total gravesite, about 60% was situated on the areas of 30-60% slopes, and the occupation extent in average was about $89m^2$ per grave which was wider than that of the national average $52m^2$. The soils occupied by gravas ware characterizod by having recommendable properties about 73% for grassland, about 17% for woodland and 8% for orchards.

  • For fine control of operating temperature of shape memory alloy, we investigated the effect of thermal teratment of shape memory alloy with the impurity kind. The martensitic transformation temperature in a Cu-17.25Zn-15Al and Cu-17.25Zn-15Al-1Ag/Fe was measured using electrical resistivity as a function of quenching temperature. Order-disorder phase transition temperatures in parent phase were measured and kind of transition were distinguised by DSC(differential scanning calorimeter) with heating rate variation. And structual changes were studied with XRD. For the Cu-17.25Zn-15Al shape memory alloy, the order-disorder phase transition temperature, $T_{B2}$ and $T_{L21}$ was 809K and 610K and for the Cu-17.25Zn-15Al-1Ag and Cu-17.25Zn-15Al-1Fe specimen $T_{B2}$ and $T_{L21}$ was 794K and 610K, and 803K and 613K, respectively. In all the specimens, quenching from near $T_{B2}$ leads to an increase in martensitic temperature, whereas quenching from near $T_{L21}$ leads to an decrease in martensitic temperature.

  • The nonstoichiometry of the iron oxide system has been studied by analyzing the weight loss of a sample, measured by using a quartz microbalance, in a temperature range from $0^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ under oxygen pressures from $10^{2}mmHg$ to $10^{-4}mmHg$. The Y values of the formula, $FeO_{1+\gamma}$, that have been obtained by this means for various conditions of temperature and pressure in this range are considered to be more accurate than values obtained by methods requiring thste quenching of the sample before measurements are made. The plots of log Y vs $log PO_2$ (or $log Y =_n log PO_2$) show linearity and n calculated from the slope of the plot is about 1/10 at $1000^{\circ}C$, indicating a difference between the nonstoichiometric and oxidation mechanisms. The condition for the formation of stoichiometric FeO was determined to be $1200^{\circ}C$ under $10^{-3}mmHg$ of $O_2$ and the composition of the oxide under standard conditions was $FeO_{1.11185}$. As in general more oxygen dissolves into the oxide system at lower temperatures and higher oxygen pressures, the deviation from stoichiometric FeO is greater under those conditions. A comparison of the change in conductivity of the sample indicates that full phase transition does not take place with conductivity transition.
