  • A parametric numerical analysis according to diameter, length, and N values of soil was conducted for the PHC pile socketed into weathered rock through sandy soil layers. In the numerical analysis, the Mohr-Coulomb model was applied to PHC pile and soils, and the contacted phases among the pile-soil-cement paste were modeled as interfaces with a virtual thickness. The parametric numerical analyses for 10 kinds of pile diameters were executed to obtain the load-settlement relationship and the axial load distribution according to N-values. The load-settlement curves were obtained for each load such as total load, total skin friction, skin friction of the sandy soil layer, skin friction of the weathered rock layer and end bearing resistance of the weathered rock. As a result of analysis of various load levels from the load-settlement curves, the settlements corresponding to the inflection point of each curve were appeared as about 5~7% of each pile diameter and were estimated conservatively as 5% of each pile diameter. The load at the inflection point was defined as the mobilized bearing capacity ($Q_m$) and it was used in analyses of pile bearing capacity. And SRF was appeared above average 70%, irrespective of diameter, embedment length of pile and N value of sandy soil layer. Also, skin frictional resistance of sandy soil layers was evaluated above average 80% of total skin frictional resistance. These results can be used in calculating the bearing capacity of prebored PHC pile, and also be utilized in developing the bearing capacity prediction method and chart for the prebored PHC pile socketed into weathered rock through sandy soil layers.

  • In this study, the characteristics of bearing capacity and deformation of intermediate soils are investigated through centrifuge tests. The experimental parameters are footing width, initial stress condition of soils and relative loading rate defined relationship of loading rate and permeability of soils. It is examined that loading rate influences on the bearing capacities and deformations. Based on the test results, some problem of existing specification are introduced in the view of related loading rates and load intensities. Especially it is showed that load intensities magnitude rlre reversed in the same settlement ratio(s/B(%)), due to partial drained effect as well as loading rates in undrained con dition based on the excess pore pressure and deformations measured under loading.

  • In this paper the method of estimating the bearing capacity of shallow foundation on a finite layer of sandy ground underlain by a rigid base was proposed by assessing results of the model test and the numerical analyses. For model experiments, the centrifuge tests under 1g and 20 g of gravitational levels were performed with sandy soils sampled from the field, changing the relative density of sandy soil and the ratio of thickness of sand layer (H) to the width of strip footing (B). As results of tests, bearing capacity tends to increase with the value of H/B while settlement for a given load intensity decreases. Bearing capacity also increases with relative density of the soil. In order to propose the method of estimating the bearing capacity of thin sandy layer underlain by a rigid base, values of bearing capacity factors from test results were compared with the values of modified bearing capacity factor by Mandel & Salencon (1972) considering the effect of H/B value on bearing capacity. The relation of bearing capacity factor ratio, normalizing friction angle of sandy soil, with the value of H/B was suggested so that this relation could be applied to design in the safe side. The results of numerical analyses obrained by changing the layout of footing, relative density of sandy soil and the value of H/B, were in good agreements with the suggested relation.

  • This paper is to investigate the bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of slope subjected to strip surcharges adjassent to embankment slope of sandy soil. Parametric model tests under plain strain condition were performed by changing width of footing, relative density of slope materials, and position of footing from the crest of slopes. For model tests, Jumunjin standard sand was used as the slope material and its relative density was 45% and 70%, respectively. The angle of slope was formed with 1 : 1.5 and 1 2. Rigid model footings, made of aluminuu were used with their widths of 4, 7, 10 and 12cm. For the position of model footing, position ratios, distance of model footing from the crest of slope divided by footing width, were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Failure mechanism was observed by using ink colored sands and markers inserted in model slopes. Ultimate bearing capacity obtained from tests was analyzed and compared with limit equilibrium method, limit analysis method and empirical equation. Characteristics of load-settlement curves and failure mechanism were also analyzed and compared with the existing theories. Thus, their effects on ultimate bearing capacity of model footing adjacent to slope were assessed.

  • The use of the bearing capacity equation is subjected to several uncertainties. In this study, estimation of the bearing capacity of footings based on the cone resistance q$_{c}$ is investigated. Non-linear finite element analyses based on a state-dependent stress-strain model were performed to obtain the load-settlement responses of axially loaded circular footings. Various soil and footing conditions, including different relative densities, depths of embedment, and footing diameters were considered in the analyses. Based on the finite element results, load-settlement curves were obtained and used to determine the unit limit bearing capacity in terms of the cone resistance q$_{c}$ for footings subjected to surcharge. Values of the unit bearing capacity for different embedment depths were in a narrow range, while considerable variation was observed with relative density D$_{R}$. It was observed that the unit limit bearing capacity normalized with respect to q$_{c}$ decreases as D$_{R}$ increases for a given surcharge.

  • For geotechnical applications, engineers use data obtained from a site investigation to interpret the structure and potential behavior of the subsurface. In most cases, these data consist of samples that represent 1/100,000 or less of the total volume of soil. These samples and associated field and lab testing provide the information used to estimate soil parameter values. The resulting values are estimated ones and there exists some likelihood that actual soil conditions are significantly different from the estimates. This may be the case even if the sampling and interpretation procedures are performed in accordance with standard practice. Although these efforts have been made to characterize the uncertainty associated with geotechnical parameters, there is no commonly accepted method to evaluate quantitatively the quality of an investigation plan as a whole or the relative significance of individual sampling points or potential sampling points.

  • The field tests were performed to suggest the rational method for stability evaluation of soft clay. The behavior of settlement-displacement obtained by field monitoring system was to compare and analyze the results of the observationed method, and to investigate the complex behavior of soft clay with filling height. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. The horizontal displacement was suddenly increased when physical properties of soft clay showed maximum values and the part of the turning point. The values of these properties were available to the fundamental data for stability evaluation. The shear deformation appeared that difference of the horizontal displacement was maximum values. 2. Although the stability of embankment by step filling showed the unstable part over the failure standard line, the embankment was confirmed stable. So the evaluation of the stability of embankment is reasonable to use the inclination of curve than failure standard line. 3. The horizontal displacement and relative settlement were increased as same ratio at improvement ground. Estimation of shear deformation using Terzaghi's modified bearing capacity should consider the relations of embankment load and undrained shear strength at nonimprovement ground, and minimum safety factor is recommended to use larger than 1.2. 4. Excess pore water pressure was increased with increasing of filling height and decreased with maintain the filling height. The embankment was unstable when filling height was exceed the evaluation standard line, and the behavior of excess pore water pressure and horizontal displacement could use as a standard of judgement of the filling velocity control because their behavior were agree with each other.

  • In the current work, a series of three-dimensional finite element analyses have been carried out to understand the behaviour of piles when the adjacent tunnelling passes underneath grouped piles with a reinforced pile cap. In the current study, the numerical analysis studied the computed results regarding the ground reinforcement condition between the tunnel and pile foundation. In addition, several key issues, such as the pile settlements, the axial pile forces, the shear stresses and the relative displacements have been thoroughly analysed, and the IoT platform based preliminary design guidelines were also presented. The pile head settlements of the nearest pile from the tunnel without the ground reinforcement increased by about 70% compared to the farthest pile from the tunnel with the maximum level of reinforcement. The quality management factor data of the piles were provided as API (Application Programming Interface) of various forms by the collection and refinement. Hence it has been shown that it would be important to provide the appropriate API by defining the each of data flow process when the data were created. The behaviour of the grouped piles with the pile cap, depending on the amount of ground reinforcement, has been extensively analysed, and the IoT platform regarding the quality management of piles has been suggested.

  • It is known that the response of piles is affected by the shape of pile as well as soil conditions. In order to investigate the characteristics of the axial responses and bearing capacities of non-displacement tapered and cylindrical piles in sands, 12 model pile load tests using a calibration chamber were conducted on model tapered and cylindrical piles, which were specially manufactured to measure the base and shaft load capacities independently. Results of the model tests showed that the shaft load of tapered piles continuously increased with pile settlement, whereas the shaft load of cylindrical piles reached ultimate values at a settlement equal to 4% of pile diameter. Therefore, taper piles have greater shaft loads than cylindrical one at the same settlement. It is also observed that the total load capacity of tapered piles is lower than cylindrical piles for dense sand but is greater than that of cylindrical piles for medium sand. The ultimate unit base resistance of tapered piles was greater than that of cylindrical piles for lateral earth pressure ratio greater than 0.4, and the shaft resistance was greater than that of cylindrical piles irrespective of lateral earth pressure ratio.
