Model Tests on Ground Deformation during Trench Excavation for Diaphragm Walls (지중연속벽 시공을 위한 트렌치 굴착시 지반변형에 관한 모형실험)

  • A series of model tests were performed to investigate the ground deformation during trench excavation for diaphragm walls. An apparatus was manufactured to observe the failure pattern of a slurry-supported trench in sandy ground. Ground deformations including settlement and lateral displacement of the surrounding ground adjacent to the trench were carefully monitored during excavation. Experimental observations indicated that the settlement of the adjacent ground increased with closing to the trench. Especially, the considerable settlement occurred at the distance which was equal to 40% of the excavation depth. And, the higher settlement was obtained when the relative density of ground was looser and the ground water table was higher. Also, the lateral wall face of excavated trench was bulged with lowering the slurry level In stages and then the upper part of trench failed finally. The envelope of ground surface settlement could be represented as a hyperbolic line and the measured settlement was smaller than those predicted by Clough and O'Rourke (1990).

  • LCC analysis is a method that coordinates with function evaluation for value improvement, rather than a separate one for cost evaluation. Although its accuracy is rising, materials and structural types developed or applied relatively recently have yet to obtain a sufficient maintenance profile DB, inducing reliability to reduce from difficulties in estimating maintenance records. Based on the above mentioned background, this paper presents the LCC methodology of coordinating functional intensification matters with cost for analysis on alternatives with difficulties in setting maintenance profile. Recently, steel plate bridge deck pavements are faced with problems such as plastic deformation due to the increase in heavy vehicles and traffic, promoting the development of a new compound pavement. This paper execute LCC analysis by mentioning case studies of SMA, Guss and PSMA pavements to include performance scale compared between alternatives as relative evaluation coefficients into the maintenance profile.

Field Load Test Results and Suggestion of Simple Settlement Estimation Method for Granular Compaction Piles (조립토 다짐말뚝에 대한 현장재하시험 결과 및 간편 침하량 산정방법의 제시)

  • In the previous studies, settlement behaviors of granular compaction piles have generally been analyzed with an evaluation of the settlement reduction factor based on tile load-sharing ratio and the replacement ratio. In this approach, however, since the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as the composite ground, only the difference of a relative vertical strength between piles and soils is taken into account without reflecting lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles. In the companion research paper, the method of estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles was proposed by synthetically considering a vertical strength of the ground, lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles, the strength of pile materials, a pile diameter, and an installation distance of the pile. In the presented study, to validate a propriety of the previously proposed method, large scale field load tests and three dimensional numerical analyses are performed. The results are analyzed in detail and compared with the predicted settlements by the proposed method. Finally, a simple method to estimate the settlement of granular compaction piles is suggested for an easy application of the practical design.

  • In this research, the fiber Bragg grating sensors with long gauge for displacement measurement in the long distance is developed and tested. The sensors show an accuracy and a capability for displacement measurement oin long distance. Monitoring using static logger of system of FBG sensor with strained optical fiber shows the capability of measurement in the harsh environment such as strong wind. Measurement of long distance displacement by optical fiber sensor if use $250{\mu}m$ optical fiber and impose some strong pre-tension shows possibility in monitoring of nuclear containment structure.

Quantitative Estimation of Joint Spacing for Concrete Slab to Prevent Cracking of Drying Shrinkage (건조수축에 따른 균열 방지를 위한 콘크리트 슬래브의 정량적 줄눈 간격 산정)

  • The installation of joint is to prevent random cracking due to drying shrinkage stress of concrete slab. However contraction joint spacing is empirically implemented into slab constructions without detail calculation based on quantitative criteria. In this study, shrinkage strain of concrete due to concrete shrinkage stress was measured to suggest joint spacing based on the study results. The test environmental conditions were applied temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 60%. The design compressive strength used was 30 MPa and 40 MPa, which are currently used in concrete slab designs. The drying shrinkage test result was applied to drying shrinkage models (ACI 209R, CEB MC 90, B3, GL 2000 and Sakata). The results showed that the most appropriate model was ACI 209R model. Based on the research findings, quantitative contraction joint spacing locations were calculated.

ON THE FIFTH FORCE AND THE STRUCTURE OF NEUTRON STAR (제 5힘과 중성자성의 구조)

  • In the framework of Thomas-Fermi equation, we have examined the properties of neutron star by assuming the existence of a new intermediate force which is composition dependent. We have found that the structure, size and mass of neutron star are affected by the strength and range of this new force. In the ultrarelativistic limit, we have also confirmed that Chandraseknar mass, $M_{ch}\simeq(1-\alpha)^{-3/2}{m_{pl}}^3/m^2$ is determined by the constants of classical physical laws, which take part in the selfgravitating processes on neutron star as well as the constant of hypothetical fifth force. In the experimental limits of the fifth force, the changes of size and mass of a neutron star are in the order of strength parameter $\alpha$.

  • 누설방지를 목적으로 산업용 기계에서 많이 사용되고 있는 기계평면시일(mechanical face seal)은 기능상 높은 신뢰도를 요구하고 있다. 이를 위하여 동적 안정성이 커야되고, 밀봉된 유체의 누설을 최소화시킬 수 있는 정도에서 시일의 수명을 결정해야 한다. 이와같이 상반된 성질을 동시에 만족시키기 위하여 시일 성능에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 기하학적 요인들을 고려하여 해석해야 한다. 일반적으로 미끄럼 접촉운동을 하고 있는 시일에서 시일링 간극(sealing gap)이 수 micron 단위라는 점을 고려할때 시일 조립시 중심맞추기(alignnment) 정미\ulcorner 결여 및 회전축의 자중량 등에 의한 기계적 변형(mechanical distortion), 특히 고온의 분위기에서 작동되고 있는 시일의 열변형(thermal distortion)은 시일의 경사집에 커다란 영햐을 주고 있다. 또한 누설을 최소화시킬 목적으로 시일 링(seal ring) 을 시일의 경사짐에 커다란 영향을 주고 있는 스프링의 강성도를 증가시키면 상대 미끄럼 운동을 하고 있는 접촉명이 건조마찰에 의한 마멸이 진행되어 코닝(coning)현상이 생긴다. 시일 평면에서 코닝 현상은 시일의 축방향 분리력(axial separtating force)과 경사 모우면트(tilting moment)에 커다란 영향을 주고 있는 것으로 알여졌다. 이들의 연구는 주로 경사진 시일평판에 시일근사치이논(seal approximation bhoryl)을 이용하여 1차원 비압축성에 관한 시월 성능을 해석하였다. 본 연구에서는 비압축성 유체의 점성이 온도에 의하여 변화를 일으키는 조건하에서 경사진 회전시일에 코닝이 발생되었을때 시일링 각극에서의 압력분포를 ㅈ차원인 경우에 대하여 수치적으로 해석을 하였다.

  • W CMP 공정에서 abrasive 의 size 및 shape 에 따른 CMP 거동에 대해 관찰하였으며, 주요 제거 막질인 W 막질과 stopping layer 로 사용되는 Oxide 막질에 대한 압력(P)과 상대 속도(V) 영향성을 관찰하였다. CMP 제거량이 입자의 size 변화에 의존한다는 기존의 이론과는 달리 응집도(aggregate ratio) 변화가 주요 변수임을 밝혀 내었다. 한편, 각 막질에 대한 P,V 영향성 평가를 통해, 변형된 Prestonian equation 이 abrasive size 및 shape 에 상관없이 W 막질의 제거 거동을 설명하는데 중요한 역할을 수행함을 보였다. 그렇지만, W CMP 공정에서 stopping layer 로 사용되는 oxide 막질의 거동을 설명하는 데에는 어려움이 있었으며, 특히 P,V 에 의한 비선형적 removal rate(RR) 거동발생으로 인해 기존의 이론치와는 많은 차이를 나타내었다. 또한, abrasive size 와 shape 에 따라서도 복잡한 거동을 나타낸다.

Effect of temperature and moisture on curling of early age concrete slabs (재령 초기 콘크리트 슬래브의 컬링에 미치는 온도와 수분의 영향)

  • It is known that the long-term behavior and performance of jointed concrete pavement due to slab curling are affected by the environmental factors such as temperature, moisture, and so on. However, any relationships between the curling and its factors have not been defined clearly yet because of insufficient detailed investigation. The temperature, relative humidity, strain, vertical displacement of a concrete slab, and horizontal movement of its transverse joints were investigated by various sensors and devices instrumented in the slab of a concrete pavement section constructed for this study. The constraint of the curling by joint stiffness was investigated in addition to effect of the temperature and moisture on the early aged concrete slab by analyzing the field data measured for approximately 4days from concrete placement. The curling of the concrete slab showed 24hour cycles mainly because of the temperature effect, and the upward curling gradually increased because of the long-term effect of drying shrinkage of the concrete. The magnitude and variation of the curling were significantly affected by the joint stiffness which is comprised of aggregate interlocking and other factors. The effect of the variation of the seasonal joint stiffness varying with the temperature and long-term drying shrinkage on the slab curling will be investigated as a further study.

The Stability Evaluation Methods of Embankment on Soft Clay (연약지반 성토의 안정평가 방법)

  • The field tests were performed to suggest the rational method for stability evaluation of soft clay. The behavior of settlement-displacement obtained by field monitoring system was to compare and analyze the results of the observationed method, and to investigate the complex behavior of soft clay with filling height. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. The horizontal displacement was suddenly increased when physical properties of soft clay showed maximum values and the part of the turning point. The values of these properties were available to the fundamental data for stability evaluation. The shear deformation appeared that difference of the horizontal displacement was maximum values. 2. Although the stability of embankment by step filling showed the unstable part over the failure standard line, the embankment was confirmed stable. So the evaluation of the stability of embankment is reasonable to use the inclination of curve than failure standard line. 3. The horizontal displacement and relative settlement were increased as same ratio at improvement ground. Estimation of shear deformation using Terzaghi's modified bearing capacity should consider the relations of embankment load and undrained shear strength at nonimprovement ground, and minimum safety factor is recommended to use larger than 1.2. 4. Excess pore water pressure was increased with increasing of filling height and decreased with maintain the filling height. The embankment was unstable when filling height was exceed the evaluation standard line, and the behavior of excess pore water pressure and horizontal displacement could use as a standard of judgement of the filling velocity control because their behavior were agree with each other.
