Optical Fiber Bragg Grating sensor has a good performance to measure microscopic displacement which can measure strain of lining concrete and cylindrical structure like high intensity containment building and it can present many advantages like a corrosion resistance from the durability point of view. Then it can measure plane geometrical displacement of cylindrical structures with two-way displacement FBG sensor module. According to the test result, measurement of FBG sensor is better performance than other electric sensor system and 2D-level measurement. As a test result, Resolution of the two-way displacement sensor module with FBG sensors are more 10 times than other LVDT or 2D surveying.

Model pile pull-out tests have been executed to investigate the characteristics of the critical relative displacement at which the critical pile skin resistance is mobilized. Test result shows that the critical relative displacement is neither constant nor pile size dependent, but it is the most closely related with the magnitude of the critical skin resistance. The empirical relationship between the two quantities has been established. Behavior of centrifuge physical models of skin-resistance-related problems has been investigated on a quantitative basis by a computational method. A pile downdrag problem has been employed as an example of the skin-resistance-related problems. A simple transfer function type method has been developed for the analysis of the downdrag. It is concluded from the analysis that centrifuge physical modeling of skin-resistance-related problems may lead to an erroneous result on an unconservative side, as may have been expected due to the violation of the similarity rule by the quantity of the critical relative displacement.
Sand compaction pile (SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which are being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model tests and 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between sand compaction piles and surrounding soft soils. Based on the results obtained, as the area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio increases at the pile point, the settlement decreases, and the relative displacement between column and soil also decreases. It is also found that numerical study is illustrated by good comparison with model test results, and the numerical analysis revealed slip effects which could not be specifically identified in the model tests.

To observe the rail-slab interaction in continuous welded railway(CWR) bridge when earthquake occurs, additional axial rail stresses and relative longitudinal displacements between rail and bridge deck were calculated with input of various load combinations and 3 different types of seismic loads to an analytical model. As results of analysis, it can be found that standard response spectrum proposed by Korea Rail(KR) network authority for earthquake design showed less additional axial rail stresses than allowable levels, but greater relative longitudinal displacement between rail and bridge deck, which means that adjustment of relative longitudinal displacement within a standard level is much more difficult than axial train stress. Additionally, if a large-scaled earthquake as occurred at Kobe, Japan comes up, then both of additional axial rail stress and relative displacement in rail-bridge deck may exceed allowable levels, which indicates to make proper design guides against sudden earthquake occurrence.
One of the most important and difficult tasks in designing underground structure is the estimation of engineering properties of the ground. The main purpose of this study is to propose a new back-analysis technique in tunnelling to estimate geotechnical parameters around a tunnel. In this study, the Extended Bayesian Method, which appropriately combines objective information with subjective one, is adopted to optimize engineering parameters. By using only relative convergence data measured during tunnelling as input values in back-analysis, inevitable errors in absolute convergence estimation are excluded and 3-dimensional numerical analysis is applied to consider a trend of relative convergence occurrence. Finally, 3-dimensional back-analysis technique using relative convergence is proposed and evaluated using a hypothetical site.

Earthquake time-history analyses have been carried out for a buried gas pipeline of X65 which is of popular use in Korea. Parameters included are shape of a buried gas pipeline, soil characteristics, single and multiple earthquake input ground motions and burial depths. Predicted response of strain and relative displacement are then compared with allowable strain and displacement capacity calculated by Guidelines for the Seismic Design of Buried Gas Pipelines, KOGAS. Comparative studies show that strains are in general affected by the burial depths together with change of soil conditions. Regarding the relative displacement, while axial relative displacement is not influenced by the burial depths, transverse relative displacement is affected by both burial depths as well as soil conditions. In all, the current study is encouraged to give a useful information for healthy earthquake evaluation of a buried pipeline.

The rover positioning is performed by estimating the baseline vector components in doubledifference positioning mode. This means that relative displacement due to the tide effects can be neglected when the distance between the reference and rover station is relatively short. However, the tide effects should be carefully modeled and removed as the baseline length gets longer. In this study, the relative displacement over the Korean Peninsula due to tide effects are examined through the numerical analysis. The results show that the tide modeling is required for the precise GPS positioning at cm-level accuracy.

Elastic deformations of an infinitely long strip and a beam loaded by uniform pressure upon their upper surfaces, with the fixed-free end dondition, are considered within the range of small strains. All local governing equations are satisfied up to first order in strains, and to take into account the higher order terms neglected in the local governing equations, the overall equilibrium is imposed exactly up to the leading order. The success of the approach relies upon the semi-inverse method and the decomposition of deformations in which the classical linear theory guides the solution. The solution bridges the gap between the two extremes-the classical solutions valid only for infinitesimal deformations and the solutions form the technical theories for deformations with large rotations. The solutions may be used to confirm the technical theories and to verify numerical solutions obtained from finite element analysis.

Assuming plastic zones spreading out on each slip plane of the two materials under out-of-plane shear loading, the size of each plastic zone is computed. The effect of the different frictional shear stresses in the two materials on the size of each plastic zone and the relative displacement at the crack tip are investigated. The relation between the J-integral in this model and the relative displacement at the crack tip is also obtained.
