  • Purpose: In this study, the effect of the eye movement direction on visual function related to accommodation was investigated when playing computer games for a certain period of time. Methods: Total 60 subjects in 20s who had the visual acuity of 1.0 or higher without any ocular disease and accommodative dysfunction were asked to play computer games separately in horizontal and vertical directions for 40 and 90 minutes and then measured their accommodative amplitude, accommodative facility, accommodative lag and relative accommodations. Thevisual function when not doing the computer game was regarded as a control value, and further compared and analyzed. Results: The accommodative amplitude, accommodative facility, accommodative lag and relative accommodations showed the tendency of decrease after the computer game for 40 minutes, and more reduced values of the visual functions were shown when the computer game extended up to 90 minutes except positive relative accommodation. Positive relative accommodation had a tendency to increase slightly after the computer game for 90 minutes. Meanwhile, the change of the visual functions was primarily influenced by the eye movement in horizontal direction rather than by the eye movement in vertical direction during computer game when analyzed by the direction of eye movement. Conclusions: Over all accommodative functions tended to decrease with the extended VDT working time by computer game, and the frequent eye movement in horizontal direction during VDT tasks could be the main cause of eyestrain since the eye movement in horizontal direction rather than vertical direction significantly affected the change of accommodative function.

  • It is known that among many factors, relative micromotion at bone/implant interfaces can hinder bone ingrowth into surface pores of an implant. Loading conditions, mechanical properties of spinal materials, friction coefficients at the interfaces and geometry of spinal segments would affect the relative micromotion and spinal stability. A finite clement model of the human lumbar spine segments (L4-L5) was constructed to investigate the mechanical sensitivity at the interfaces between bone and cage. Relative micromotion. Posterior axial displacement. bone stress, cage stress and friction force were predicted in changes of friction coefficients, loading conditions. bone density and age-related material/geometric properties of the spinal segments. Relative micromotion (slip distance in a static loading means relative micromotion in routine activity) at the interfaces increased significantly as the mechanical properties of cancellous bone, annulus fibers or/and ligaments decrease or/and as the friction coefficient at the interfaces decreases. The contact normal force at the interfaces decreased as cancellous bone density decreases or/and as the friction coefficient increases A significant increase of slip distance at anterior annulus occurred with an addition of torsion to compressive preload. Relative micromotion decreased with an increase of disc area. In conclusion. relative micromotion, stress response. Posterior axial displacement and contact normal force are sensitive to the friction coefficient of the interfaces, bone density, loading conditions and age-related geometric/material changes.

  • Three-dimensional structures of large ocean rings in the Gulf Stream region are investigated using the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). Numerically simulated flow structures around four selected cyclonic and anticyclonic rings are compared with two different horizontal resolutions: $1/12^{\circ}$ and $1/48^{\circ}$. The vertical distributions of Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs) are analyzed using Finite Size Lyapunov Exponent (FSLE) and Okubo-Weiss parameters (OW). Curtain-shaped FSLE ridges are found in all four rings with extensions of surface ridges throughout the water columns, indicating that horizontal stirring is dominant over vertical motions. Near the high-resolution rings, many small-scale flow structures with size O(1~10) km are observed while these features are rarely found near the low-resolution rings. These small-scale structures affect the flow pattern around the rings as flow particles move more randomly in the high-resolution models. The dispersion rates are also affected by these small-scale structures as the relative horizontal dispersion coefficients are larger for the high-resolution models. The absolute vertical dispersion rates are, however, lower for the high-resolution models, because the particles tend to move along inclined eddy orbits when the resolution is low and this increases the magnitude of absolute vertical dispersion. Since relative vertical dispersion can reduce this effect from the orbital trajectories of particles, it gives a more reasonable magnitude range than absolute dispersion, and so is recommended in estimating vertical dispersion rates.

  • In this study, friction tests were performed in order to investigate the effect of sliding velocity and normal load on the friction characteristics of DLC (a-C:H) and WC/C (a-C:H:W) using a ball-on-disk type friction tester. DLC and WC/C were deposited on AISI 52100 steel balls. Friction tests against carburized SCM 415 Cr-Mo steel disks were carried out under various sliding velocity (0.1, 0.78, 1.56, 3.13, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 mm/s) and normal load (2.4, 4.8 and 9.6 N) conditions while the relative humidity was 20~40 % R.H. and air temperature was $16{\sim}24^{\circ}C$. As results, kinetic friction coefficients of DLC and WC/C were obtained under each test condition. The results show that the kinetic friction coefficients of DLC and WC/C generally increase with the increase in sliding velocity. And, under the same sliding velocity condition, the kinetic friction coefficients are almost constant regardless of normal load. In addition, the kinetic friction coefficients of DLC are lower than those of WC/C under the same test conditions.

  • Based on the ICE-3G and ICE-5G ice models, we predicted the velocities of crustal uplift caused by Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) at 39 tide gauge sites operated by Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration (KHOA). We also divided the Korean peninsula in the ranges of $32-38.5^{\circ}N$ and $124-132^{\circ}E$ in $0.5^{\circ}{\times}0.5^{\circ}$ grids, and computed the GIA velocities at each grid point. We found that the average uplift rates due to GIA in South Korea were 0.33 and 1.21 mm/yr for ICE-3G and ICE-5G, respectively. Because the GIA rates were relatively high at ~1 mm/yr when the updated ice model ICE-5G was used, we concluded that the GIA effect cannot be neglected when we compute the absolute sea level (ASL) rates around the Korean peninsula. In this study, we corrected the ICE-5G GIA velocities from the relative sea level rates provided by KHOA and we computed the ASL rates at 13 tide gauge stations. As a result, we found that the average ASL velocity around the Korean peninsula was 5.04 mm/yr. However, the ASL rates near Jeju island were abnormally higher than the other areas and the average was 8.84 mm/yr.

  • Gravity measurement can determine the earth gravitational field, also is the fundamental to the research of earth gravitational field, geodesy and geodynamic, vertical movement of the crust, geoid surface, sea level and climate etc. Recently, National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) introduced FG-5 absolute gravity meter in order to lay a foundation for establishment of Absolute Gravity Network, and furthermore NGII plan to construct about 1,200 multi dimensional and function Unified Control Points(UCP) in nationwide. It will play an important role in development of high accuracy geoid model in South Korea. This paper explains the fundamental theory and method of relative gravity measurement, surveys the relative gravity of 21 stations using latest Scintrex CG-5 relative gravimeter. In addition, it calculates gravity values, compare and analysis gravity survey results using datum-free adjustment and weighted constraint adjustment. The results indicate show that datum-free and weighted constraint adjustment methods are available to determine high accuracy gravity achievement, datum-free method is more advantage than weighted constraint adjustment.

  • Two-dimensional large-amplitude motions in regular harmonic wave are treated in time domain, by satisfying the exact body boundary condition and the linear free surface condition. For the present numerical calculation, the method of free-surface spectral representation with simple source distribution on the instantaneous body surface has been extended to include the effect of the incident wave. Calculations of the wave exciting force are performed for a submerged circular cylinder fixed or oscillating with large amplitude. Especially, nonlinear effects on the time-mean forces are studied in detail. It is shown that relative motion between the body and the fluid particle gives a significant effect on the lift and drift forces. Also, large-amplitude motion of a submerged circular cylinder and that of a floating Lewis-form cylinder are directly simulated in time domain. In the calculation results, some nonlinear effects are shown.

  • This study develops a technique training program to enhance the completion of Kolman, the high air flight technique, and applies it to two national athletes of the horizontal bar, one of the gymnastic events, for eight weeks. After that, their improvement was measured through 3D motion analysis to help them elevate their performance. The training program includes swing, hand release, twist, and bar hold, and its implementation produced the results stated below. They were made to practice the motion in the following way. After the hand-standing of giant swing which initiates the motion, they lift their body upward a little bit more. Next, they take their body down almost like a vertical descent and make a deep tap swing. Instead of doing the tap swing which widens the flection of hip and shoulder joints, while body revolution is more emphasized in particular, they release the bar as raising the centroid of their body sufficiently. During the flight, they try to narrow every joint in their body. As a result, the bar's elasticity becomes greatly increased, and since the backing rate of their body gets higher, the centripetal force of the swing is improved that they can release the bar in the higher position. In addition, because they can erect their body faster during the flight, they can perform comfortable twist and revolution in the air. They can also adjust the direction of the flight easily without too much concern for the proper timing of hand release as they rise. Thereby, they can not only maintain adequate distance from the bar for the bar hold but also ensure enough distance for body revolution and twist.

  • This paper assesses the structural performance of the Daeungbojeon Hall of Magoksa in Gongju, a representative multi-tiered roof traditional timber structure from the Joseon Dynasty, under vertical loads. Employing midas Gen, a structural analysis software, we developed a three-dimensional analysis model closely resembling the actual structure. Static analysis was employed to evaluate the safety and serviceability of the main vertical and horizontal members under vertical loads. While all members met the safety and serviceability criteria, structural weaknesses were identified in the Daelyang of the lower floor, particularly as a transitional beam, necessitating improvement. For the evaluation of dynamic behavior characteristics, eigenvalue analysis was conducted, assuming a relative rotational stiffness of 5% at the main joints. The natural period was determined to be 1.105 seconds, placing it within the category of a Hanok of similar size. The first mode manifested as a translational movement in the forward and backward direction of the building.
