A Comparative Study of Illustration on the Grade 5 and 6 Science Textbook in Elementary School between the 2007 Curriculum and 2009 Revised Curriculum (2007과 2009 개정 교육과정의 초등학교 5, 6학년 과학 교과서 삽화 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to consider whether current science textbook is designed to let children properly obtain scientific knowledge through research study and at the same time provide an implication to help development of science textbook for the 2015 revised curriculum through comparing and analyzing of illustration in science textbooks of grade 5 and 6 published based on the 2007 curriculum and on the 2009 revised curriculum. The conclusion of comparison and analysis on illustration of the grade 5 and 6 science textbooks in the 2007 curriculum and the 2009 revised curriculum as follows. First, according to the comparison and analysis result on in the textbook, science textbook of year 2009 revised for grade 5 and 6 had 1.65 illustration per page and for the 2007 curriculum, it had 1.98 illustrations per page having 0.83 times more illustrations than that of the previous one. Second, the types of illustrations both textbooks had a higher ratio of pictures that are very detailed and objective which can identify scientific facts. In terms of role of illustration, illustrations providing various and realistic data related to the learning for students to have enough scientific experiences accounted for the most ratios.

An Analysis for Gender-Role Stereotyping of Illustrations in Elementary Science Textbooks Developed under 2007 Revised National Curriculum (2007 개정 교육과정에 의한 초등학교 과학과 교과용 도서의 삽화에 나타난 성역할 고정관념 분석)

  • In this study, the illustrations in 16 elementary science textbooks developed under the 2007 Revised National Curriculum were analyzed in the aspect of gender-role stereotyping, and the results were compared with those of the 7th National Curriculum. The frequencies of male and female who appeared on textbook illustrations were counted, and the types of activities and the characters of them were analyzed. Most pupils were found to be active, and female pupils appearing in the textbooks were more than male pupils. In all types of activities for pupils, the difference between male and female was decreased compared with that of the 7th National Curriculum. Male and female pupils were illustrated in learning activities with almost equal frequencies, but male pupils were still more frequently represented than female pupils in other activities. Gender difference in adults was increased and the difference was statistically significant. Gender difference in houseworks was not large, but the difference in outdoor activities was statistically significant. Especially, the jobs of adults were illustrated as male-centered, and scientists appearing in the textbook illustrations were also mostly male.

The effects of types of presentation on the learning performance, satisfaction & expectation in cyber lecture (사이버 강좌의 정보제시유형이 학습 수행과 만족도, 학습기대감에 미치는 영향)

  • 본 연구는 대학생을 대상으로 사이버 강좌에서 사용되는 세가지 정보제시 유형에 따라 학습자의 학습 수행, 콘텐츠 만족도, 그리고 학습성취 기대감에 어떤 차이가 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 이에 공기펌프 작동원리, 브레이크 작동원리, 번개형성과정의 세가지 과제를 나레이션+텍스트(na+text), 나레이션+삽화(na+illust), 나레이션+애니메이션(na+ani)의 세가지 정보제시 유형의 콘텐츠를 제작하였다. 먼저 학습수행에 있어서는 브레이크 과제에서 정보제시 유형별 유의한 차이가 나타났으며 세가지 정보제시 유형 모두에서 na+illust, na+ani, na+text 조건 순으로 성취가 높았다. 번개형성과정에서도 정보제시 유형별 유의한 차이가 있었고, na+text, na+ani, na+illust 의 순으로 학습성취가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 콘텐츠 만족도에 있어서는 공기펌프와 브레이크 과제 모두에서 제시유형별로 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, na+ani, na+illust, na+text 순으로 만족하는 것으로 나타났다. 학습성취에 대한 기대감도 공기펌프와 브레이크 과제 모두에서 유의한 차이가 있으며, 그 순서는 만족도와 동일하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 나레이션이 제공되는 3 가지 정보제시 유형의 콘텐츠를 학습함에 있어 학습과제와 학습과제 제시 유형에 따른 학습 수행의 차이를 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 이러한 학습수행 결과는 피험자의 콘텐츠 만족도와 학습 성취 기대감과는 다른 패턴을 보임으로써 정보제시 유형에 대한 평가와 실제 학습수행과는 차이가 있음을 시사한다.

Comparison of Illustrations of Elementary Science Textbooks in Korea and Singapore (우리나라와 싱가포르의 초등학교과학교과서 삽화 비교 분석)

  • The purpose of this research is to examine the current state of inserting illustrations in science textbooks under the 7th Revised Educational Curriculum which is currently enforced in all grades of elementary schools, and to compare and analyze the external and internal differences in illustrations in science textbooks of elementary schools in Singapore and Korea and to present desirable direction of producing illustrations. There are not only some differences in rate of the kinds and role of the illustrations in grades, but also in both countries. For example, in the case of illustrations for motivation, in both Korea and Singapore, interesting photos related to overall contents with regard to the contents of the unit are used. But in the 3rd and 4th grade class in Singapore, story types of cartoons related to learning subjects are presented to draw students' interest and attention. These need to be considered when developing textbook illustrations in the future.

  • Eight tardigrade species belonging to the genus Batillipes are recorded from the intertidal and shallow sublittoral sands at 29 localities in South Korea. Batillipes rotundiculus n. sp. is characteristic in having the round caudal protrusion and the blister-like lateral body protuberance between legs III and IV. Five species (B. pennaki Marcus, B. similis Schulz, B. tridentatus Pollock, B. crassipes Tchesunov and Mokievsky, and B. philippinensis Chang and Rho), newly known to Korean fauna, are briefly remarked with illustrations. A key to the eight species of the batillipedid tardigrades from Korea is prepared.

Comparative Study on Illustrations of the Korean Science Textbooks of Education Curriculum Revised in 2007 and the American Science Textbooks (2007년 개정 교육과정에 따른 한국 과학교과서와 미국 과학교과서의 삽화 비교 연구)

  • The focus of this study was on the comparative analysis in the area of illustrations between the primary school from third grade to the sixth grade between Korean and American science textbooks in order to offer some suggestions for consideration of the Korean science textbooks, which will be revised in 2009. The results are as follows: The number of illustrations per page in Korean science textbooks are more than that of American science textbooks. As the type of illustrations, the ratio of photos is the highest and as the role of illustrations, data provision has the highest percentage in both countries. The motivation role in Korean science textbooks seem to be higher than American science textbook, whereas study summary role is more prominent in American textbooks than in Korean textbooks.

  • Three species belonging to genera Acaphylla Keifer and Calacarus Keifer (Prostigmata: Eriophyidae) that cause damage to Camellia (Theaceae) plants, have been newly recorded in Korea. The three species, Acaphylla theae (Watt), Acaphylla theavagrans Kadono, and Calacarus carinatus (Green), have been redescribed and illustrated. Keys to Korean species of the genus Acaphylla; their distribution; and biological information, such as host plants and damage symptoms, are also presented.

Several Hypotrichous Ciliates Inhabiting the Han River in Seoul (서울지역 한강에 서식하는 하모섬유충류)

  • The hypotrichous ciliates (Protozoa , Ciliophora, Hypotrichida) inhabiting the Han River in Seoul were systematically investigated. Several Collections were made from 6 November 1986 to 8 November 1987 at 9 sites located in the Han River. Collected protozoans were cultured and characterized cyto-morphologically under the living and/or stained conditions, As a result, 7 species of hypotrichs in 4 families were identified of which 3 species are newly recorded from Korea ; Paraurostyla weissei (Stein, 1859_, Aspidisca cicada(O.F. Mller, 1786) and Euplotes patella (O.f.Mller, 1773). The identified species were redescribed with illustrations and photographs. The morphological similarities among them were numerically analyzed by UPGMA method, and its result of clustering concurs in general with the orthodox classification scheme.

The Endpaper Types of Bologna Ragazzi Award Korean Picturebooks (볼로냐 라가치상을 수상한 한국 그림책의 면지 유형)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the type of endpapers in Korean picturebooks that won the Bologna Ragazzi Award. The endpapers were classified by three standards: identities between front endpapers and back endpapers, type of arts, and type of contents. As results, picturebooks with identities between front endpapers and back endpapers were slightly more than ones with unidentities. Most of art types were illustrated, followed by patterned and plain. In addition, the peritextual contents were found to be the most frequently used content type in endpapers. The results showed that the most endpapers of the Korean picturebooks that won the Bologna Ragazzi Award were related to the text contents, which suggests the important roles of endpapers in picturebook activities.

  • We first report 4 unrecorded species belonging to genus Aleiodes Wesmael discovered in South Korea: A. lipwigi, A. guidaae, A. subemarginatus, A. caprinus. In this study, diagnosis, distribution, and illustration, DNA barcode sequence are provided for identification of these species.
