  • KNI3126 which is the eco-friendly material made by plant extracts - neem and matrine - have been evaluated for efficacies against 6 main pests and toxicity on natural enemies. Insecticidal efficacies of KNI3126 against plant hopper were above 95% at 5 days after treatment (DAT), whereas pesticidal effects against the cotton aphid were above 95% at 3 DAT and slightly decreased at 5 DAT. Insecticidal efficacy against the palm thrips resulted in lower control value as 68.1% than that of chemical insecticides. KNI3126 showed more than 95% control value against diamond back moth, suggesting that it could suppress the population of pest hard to control as eco-friendly material. Mortalities against two-spotted spider mite were about 80% at 1 DAT and over 90% at 5 DAT, respectively. For evaluation of the toxicity on natural enemies, effect against predatory natural enemy was classified as moderate selective toxicity based on the criterion of International Organization of Bio-Control (IOBC), whereas against parasitic natural enemies was found to be relatively safe. Repellent effect was weak against plant hopper, but strong against two-spotted spider mite. In the toxicity test for safety, KNI3126 was classified as the lowest level at acute oral, acute dermal and fish toxicity test and did not induce the irritancy at skin irritation test and eye irritation test.

  • Biological Characteristics of Lycorma delicatula and insecticidal activity of some insecticides against nymphs of L. delicatula was investigated. Nymph of L. delicatula had 4 instars, and color of body was black. There were white spots on the body of 1st-3rd nymph. Upper body became red at 4th nymph. Adult forewings were brownish, and had black spots. Color of hind wing were red. The egg mass was covered with a yellowish brown secretion. The adult of L. delicatula emerged once a year. Among test insecticides, deltamethrin 1% EC and fenitrothion 50% EC showed very quick and strong insecticidal activity against the 2nd-3rd nymphs of L. delicatula. Imidacloprid 4% SL and clothianidin 8% SC showed 100% insecticidal activity at 24h after treatment. Thiacoprid 10% SC revealed the weakest insecticidal activity among the insecticides tested.

  • Imidacloprid and a series of the related compounds were synthesized, and influence of 3-N substituents(R) on the insecticidal activities against Brown plant hopper(Nilaparvata lugens) and Green peach aphid(Myzus persicae) were examined quantitatively from the structure-activities relationships(Shh) techniques. The results indicated that the molecular hydrophobicity$({\pi})$ and inductive substituent constant$({\sigma}^{\ast})$ of substituents(R) at 3-nitrogen position on the imidazolidine ring were important factors. Variations in the potency were parabolically related to the both constants. In case of Brown plant hopper, optimum value of ${\pi}$ constant was 0.52, whereas the value of ${\sigma}^{\ast}$ constant against Green peach aphid was 1.17, respectively. Among them, the strong electron withdrawing groups$({\sigma}^{\ast}>0)$ such as methyl and benzenesulfonyl group(7 & 8) showed lower insecticidal activity and non-substituted, 1(imidacloprid) showed the best insecticidal activity. It seems that the intramolecular associated(H-bond) form between 2-N-nitro group and 3-imid group may contribute to the higher insecticidal activity to the both sucking insects. And in aqueous solution, 1 showed higher residual activity below pH 6.0, and the half-life$(T_{1/2})$ was about 6 month at pH 7.0 $(ca.\;k_{obs.}:5{\times}10^{-8}sec.^{-1})$ and $45^{\circ}C$.

  • Metcalfa pruinosa is a pest causing widespread problems to many crops in Korea. This pest infects fruit crops especially, persimmon and grapes. We tested the possibility of M. pruinosa management using essential oils of Alpina galangal and methylcinnamate which were extracted from A. galangal by steam distillation method. The use of essential oil showed a mortality rate of 10.0 and 23.3% for adults and nymphs, respectively. While the use of methylcinnamate resulted to a mortality rate of 40.0% in adults and 36.6% in nymphs. For its repellent effect, it showed an avoidance rate of 50.0 and 63.3% for adult and nymph respectively. Considering these two results, the extract of A. galangal are shown to have some synergic effect for pest control. The result of this study showed a possibility of M. pruinosa control using essential oil and methylcinnamate from A. galangal.

  • Residual and biological effects of buprofezin(25% WP) on the larvae of the brown planthopper(BPH), Ni/aparvata /ugens SUlI, were studied by pot experiments. Residual lethal effects on the 2nd instar larvae lasted significantly long, and were higher with application rates. The rate of 17.50 g a.i./10a showed ca. 90% mortality even on 35 days after treatment (OAT). $RLT_{90}$ and $RLT_{50}$(residual lethal time that can show 90% and 50% mortality, respectively) with rates of 5.78-11.50 g a.i./lOa were 9.0-13.5, and 16.8-22.8 days, respectively. It was estimated that 13.00 and 4.44 g a.i./lOa were the rates of buprofezin which could show mortalities of 2nd instar BPH larvae above 95% and 50% until 15 OAT, respectively. The residual lethal effect of 7.00 g a.i./10a on the 1st instar BPH larvae was 100 % even on 17 OAT. $RLT_{50}$ was 32.5 days which was 15 days longer than $RLT_{50}$ for the 2nd instar larvae. Buprofezin with 7.0 g a.i./lOa showed 100% and 70% mortality for 1st-4th and 5th instar BPH larvae, respectively. Longevity of a female BPH which emerged from the 5th instar larvae treated by buprofezin was greatly reduced, and its fecundity was nearly zero.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate control effect of Spodoptera litura using nucleopolyhedrovirus in chrysanthemum seedlings of open field and plastic house. Values of LT$_{50}$ of treatment 1.0$\times$10$^{6.8}$ PIBs/ml were 6.2-5.1 days in open field and 6.9-5.4 days in plastic house. Values of LT$_{50}$ and LT$_{95}$ were shorter in open field than in plastic house. Cumulative mortality was 100% in 1.0$\times$10$^{7.8}$ PIBs/ml and also higher in open field than in plastic house. In chrysanthemum field, organic synthetic insecticide (endosulfan EC) killed S. litura larvae in 2 days after application. Motality of S. litura larva inoculated with S. litura nucleopolyhedrovirus (SINPV) 1.0$\times$10$^{6.8}$ PIBs/ml was found out from 4 days after application and maintained during 14 days. Protection values of with SINPV 1.0$\times$10$^{8}$ PIBs/ml after 16 days were 94.0% and 89.4% in open field and plastic house, respectively, and those of endosulfan 350 ppm were 91.4% and 88.6%, respectively.

  • 1. This experiment was planned to compare the effectiveness of Diazinon granular and gammadol dust with the low toxic organophosphorus insecticides applied on the water-surface for the control of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker, in the 2 nd generation and to determine the proper timing of those insecticidal applications at Suwon, Korea, in 1964. 2. The hatching larvae from the eggs were inoculated on the rice plants in pots and insecticides were applied on the water-surface of pots at a given day intervals. The dose of insecticides used per pot was calculated from the 120g. as a actual ingredient per 10 a. The number of living larvae was observed at the 20 days later from the inoculation (as shown in Table 1.). 3. As shown in Table 2 and 3, there was highly significance between the chemicals and L.S.D. was 24.22. The best effectiveness was Diazinon granular and 2nd was gamma-dol dust. The organophosphorus emulsion concentrations used in this experiment were less effective than two other insecticides. Although there were some suspicious results according to the day intervals inoculated, the order of effectiveness was Diazinon>gamma-dol>Sumithion>EM>EPN> Cidial as the total moan. 4, As shown in Table 2 and 3, there was no significance between the timing of insecticidal applications, but, m the whole, Diazinon granular was most effective at a given day intervals in this experiment and gamma-dol also was effective at the day Plot inoculated. The proper timing of EPN, EM, and Cidial seemed to be at e day plot inoculated and that of Sumithion at the day plot before inoculation.

  • Differences in larvicidal activity of complement and chemiluminescent response of phagocytes in carp (Cyprinus carpio), crucian carp (Carassius auratus) and false dace (Pseudorasbora parva) against excysted metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis were investigated. The prevalence of C. sinensis metacercariae of false daces caught at Nakdong river (NR) was 100%. However, no C. sinensis metacercariae were found in false daces, which were collected at a reservoir in Chinyoung (CY), crucian carps and carps. The sera of false dace, which were intensively infected with C. sinensis metacercariae, killed excysted metacercariae of C. sinensis more readily than that of carp. However, the serum obtained from C. sinensis metacercariae-free false dace showed the lowest larvicidal ability. The larvicidal ability of sera collected from each fish species completely disappeared when the complement was inactivated by heating. When supernatant of excysted metacercariae homogenate were added to phagocytes of each species, the chemiluminescent responses were significantly (p<0.05) diminished in false dace and carp. The inhibition ratio of chemiluminescent responses by the supernatant was 22.9% in false dace, 9.6% in crucian carp and 12.4% in carp.

  • The efficacy of spinetoram sprayed from an unmanned helicopter to control two insect vectors of pine wood nematodes, Monochamus alternatus and M. saltuarius was assessed. By using a ULV (Ultra Low Volume) sprayer, the mortality rates of phenthoate, bifenthrin, etofenprox, and diflubenzuron, which are registered for use against coleopteran insects, indoxacarb and spinetoram, which are registered for use against lepidopteran insects, were evaluated for efficacy as aerial spraying agents. The ULV test, using 33- and 55-fold dilutions of phenthoate, bifenthrin, indoxacarb, and spinetoram demonstrated a 100% insect mortality rate upon contact and feeding mortality on the third day after treatment, while etofenprox and diflubenzuron exhibited a slightly lower mortality rate than the remaining compounds. Consequently, spinetoram was selected as a candidate pesticide for aerial spraying and its efficacy to control the insect vectors was assessed. The x 33 dilution of spinetoram resulted in a 98.6-100% control efficacy against two insect vectors. However, risk assessment for bees following aerial spraying will be necessary before applying the pesticide to control insect vectors.

  • This study was conducted with n-hexane extracts of sensitive plant Mimosa pudica, mexican poppy Argemone mexicana, panimarich Leucus aspara, water pepper Polygonum hydropiper and shialmutra Blumea lacera weeds against pulse beetle Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) for protection of mung bean Vigna radiata grains. The $LC_{50}$ values of the weed extracts ranged from 4.5 to 6.4, 4.1 to 5.6 and 3.6 to 5.5 g/100 mL at 24, 48 and 72 hours of post treatment, respectively. The extracts showed 35 to 69% fecundity and 33 to 63% adult emergence inhibitory effect on the pest, and revealed 13 to 49% grain protection of mung beans. Insect mortality, fecundity and adult emergence inhibitory effects, and grain protection activity increased with increased concentration of the extracts. The shialmutra followed by water pepper extracts revealed better performances in fecundity and adult beetle emergence inhibitory effect compared to the other weeds. The findings proved that the n-hexane extracts of the five weeds are sources of botanical insecticides which may be used in the integrated management of C. chinensis.
