This study examined the conceptions of high school students, In-service chemistry teachers, and chemistry teachers related to the electrolysis phenomena by questionnaires and follow-up interviews. High school chemistry II textbooks were analyzed for finding the cause of the misconceptions of the teachers and students. From the analysis, it was found that many teachers represented to students the reduction-oxidation reaction and the electrodes of electrolysis are opposite to the reaction of a chemical cell without explanation of the principles. It means that students would learn the electrolysis phenomena by rote. But the teachers thought that it was not necessary to explain the principles to students because the students could not understand. Also, some of the teacher had misconceptions in electrolysis of solution taking no account of water electrolysis. They only considered the reduction-oxidation reactions of the ions already were contained in solution. They did not considered the ions generated by the electrolysis. This tendency is similar to In-service chemistry teachers and high school students. Also, this tendency can be found in chemistry II textbooks.
The final disposal of spent nuclear fuel(SNF) from nuclear power plants takes place in a deep geological repository. The metal canister encasing the SNF is made of cast iron and copper, and is engineered to effectively isolate radioactive isotopes for a long period of time. The SNF is further shielded by a multi-barrier disposal system comprising both engineering and natural barriers. The deep disposal environment gradually changes to an anaerobic reducing environment. In this environment, sulfide is one of the most probable substances to induce corrosion of copper canister. Stress-corrosion cracking(SCC) triggered by sulfide can carry substantial implications for the integrity of the copper canister, potentially posing a significant threat to the long-term safety of the deep disposal repository. Sulfate can exist in various forms within the deep disposal environment or be introduced from the geosphere. Sulfate has the potential to be transformed into sulfide by sulfate-reducing bacteria(SRB), and this converted sulfide can contribute to the corrosion of the copper canister. Bentonite, which is considered as a potential material for buffering and backfilling, contains oxidized sulfate minerals such as gypsum(CaSO4). If there is sufficient space for microorganisms to thrive in the deep disposal environment and if electron donors such as organic carbon are adequately supplied, sulfate can be converted to sulfide through microbial activity. However, the majority of the sulfides generated in the deep disposal system or introduced from the geosphere will be intercepted by the buffer, with only a small amount reaching the metal canister. Pyrite, one of the potential sulfide minerals present in the deep disposal environment, can generate sulfates during the dissolution process, thereby contributing to the corrosion of the copper canister. However, the quantity of oxidation byproducts from pyrite is anticipated to be minimal due to its extremely low solubility. Moreover, the migration of these oxidized byproducts to the metal canister will be restricted by the low hydraulic conductivity of saturated bentonite. We have comprehensively analyzed and summarized key research cases related to the presence of sulfates, reduction processes, and the formation and behavior characteristics of sulfides and pyrite in the deep disposal environment. Our objective was to gain an understanding of the impact of sulfates and sulfides on the long-term safety of high-level radioactive waste disposal repository.

Unlike the concrete structure built on land, that exposed to the marine environment is greatly degraded in durability due to the exposure to not only the physical action caused by sea wind, tide, and wave, but also the harsh conditions, including the chemical erosion and freeze-thaw which result from $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $Cl^-$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions in seawater. In the process of the large scaled construction of submerged concrete structures, of course environmental hazardous substance, such as alkaline (pH) and heavy metals, may be leached. Thus, this issue needs to be adequately reviewed and studied. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a CSA (Calcium Sulfo Aluminate) activator using electric arc furnace reducing slags, as well as the eco-friendly concrete for artificial reefs using electric arc furnace oxidizing slag as aggregate for concrete. The strength properties of the eco-friendly concrete exposed to the marine environment were lower than those of the normal concrete by curing 28 days. This suggest that additional studies are needed to improve the early strength of the eco-friendly concrete. With respect to seawater resistance of the eco-friendly concrete, the average strength loss against 1 year of curing days reached 8-9%. the eco-friendly concrete using high volume of ground granulated blast furnace slags and high specific gravity of electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag demonstrated the sufficient usability as a freeze-thaw resistant material. With respect to heavy metal leaching properties of the eco-friendly concrete, heavy metal substances were immobilized by chemical bonding in the curing process through the hydration of concrete. Thus, heavy metal substances were neither identified at or below environmental hazard criteria nor detected, suggesting that the eco-friendly concrete is safe in terms of leaching of hazardous substances.
Oxalic acid has been traditionally obtained via the oxidation of carbohydrates using nitric acid and catalysts. However, this process produces a variety of nitrogen oxides during oxidation and requires a separation process due to its various intermediates. These products and additional steps increase the harmfulness and complexity of the process. Recently, the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide into oxalic acid has been suggested as an environmentally friendly and efficient technology for the production of oxalic acid. In this electrochemical conversion system, zinc oxalate (ZnC2O4) is obtained by the reaction of Zn2+ ions produced by Zn oxidation and oxalate ions produced by CO2 reduction. ZnC2O4 can then be converted to form oxalic acid, but this requires the use of a strong acid and heat. In this study, a system was proposed that can easily convert ZnC2O4 to oxalic acid without the use of a strong acid while also allowing for easy separation. In addition, this proposed system can also further convert the products into glycolic acid which is a high-value-added chemical. ZnC2O4 was effectively separated into Zn(OH)2 powder and oxalate solution through a chemical treatment and a vacuum filtration process. Then the Zn(OH)2 and oxalate were electrochemically converted to zinc and glycolic acid, respectively.

Variety of volatile materials is present in crude-Zinc oxide recovered from EAFD(Electric arc furnace steel dust). Commonly, it is purified by oxidizing roasting. In this study, spherical each specimen prepared crude-zinc oxide like 1~3 mm and 10 mm was tested in vertical tube furnace at the temperature range $600^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ in oxidizing atmosphere. Oxidizing roasting properties of zinc oxide were investigated using XRD, XRF and ICP-OES. At temperature blow $950^{\circ}C$ volatilization rate were remarkably low. As the temperature increases, the concentration of Zn increased and the concentration and XRD peaks of impurities decreased. The result indicated that volatilization rate depended on specimen size and roasting temperature.
In this study, the contents of the electron transfer model presented in the 4 chemistry I and the 4 chemistry II textbooks of 2009 revised curriculum and 9 chemistry I textbooks and 6 chemistry II textbooks of 2015 revised curriculum were analyzed in the viewpoint of model's Ignorance. In addition, 3 questions were developed to find out whether 24 pre-service teachers were perceived of the Ignorance of the electron transfer model. As a result, Most textbooks explain the redox reaction of covalent bond substances, which is an inconsistent context of the electron transfer model, with mixing oxidation number change and electron transfer or with electron transfer. In addition, the change to the development and use of the model emphasized in the 2015 revised curriculum was not clearly revealed in the curriculum comparison. Most pre-service teachers incompletely perceived or did not perceive Ignorance of the electron transfer model. Only 1 pre-service teacher perceived Ignorance of the model. In conclusion, the textbook description needs to be improved so that Ignorance of the model is revealed when the textbook describes the inconsistent situation of the electron transfer model. And through the education for pre-service teachers, it is necessary to provide an opportunity for pre-service teachers to perceive Ignorance of the electron transfer model.
Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) contains compounds, such as oxides and chlorides, including large quantities of Zn, Pb and Fe. An efficient and stable method for the extraction of metal elements from EAFD is the Rotary Kiln Process. This method is used to recover Zn in the form of crude ZnO (approximately 60%) via the addition of a reducing agent (coke, anthracite) and limestone (for basicity control) to EAFD. This process is commonly used in industry as well as in research and development. Currently, this method is used in many Korean commercial plants, producing approximately 150,000 tons of Crude ZnO per year. The majority of Zn is found in crude ZnO (approximately 76%). In addition components such as Pb, Cd, Sn, In, Fe, Cl, and F are present as oxides, chlorides, and alkaline compounds. This elements have an adverse effect on the zinc smelting process. Therefore, a refining process that eliminates these impurities is essential. In this study, we developed a process technology that efficiently separates Zn and Pb from byproducts (mainly chlorides). A bag filter was used to collect Zn and Pb generated during the dry purification process of crude ZnO. Pure components were recovered as metals or metal carbonate.

While sedimentological researches on Western coastal tidal flats of Korea have been much pelformed previously, mineralogical and biogeochemical studies are beginning to be studied. The objectives of this study were to investigate mineralogical characteritics of the inter-tidal flat sediments and to explore phase transformation of iron(oxyhydr)oxides and biomineralization by metal-reducing bacteria enriched from the inter-tidal flat sediments from Muan, Jeollanam-do, Korea. Inter-tidal flat sediment samples were collected in Chungkye-myun and Haeje-myun, Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do. Particle size analyses were performed using the pipette method and sedimentation method. The separates including sand, silt and clay fractions were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffiaction (XRD). After enriching the metal-.educing bacteria from the into,-tidal flat sediments, the bacteria were used to study phase transformation of the synthesized iron (oxyhydr)oxides and iron biomineralization using lactate or glucose as the electron donors and Fe(III)-containing iron oxides as the electron accepters. Mineralogical studies showed that the sediments of tidal flats in Chung]rye-myun and Haeje-myun consist of quartz, plagioclase, microcline, biotite, kaolinite and illite. Biogeochemical researches showed that the metal-reducing bacteria enriched from the inter-tidal flat sediments reduced reddish brown akaganeite and mineralized nanometer-sized black magnetite. The bacteria also reduced the reddish brown ferrihydrite into black amorphous phases and reduced the yellowish goethite into greenish with formation of nm-sized phases. These results indicate that microbial Fe(III) reduction may play one of important roles in iron and carbon biogeochemistry as well as iron biomineralization in subsurface environments.

Some supported gold catalysts were prepared by impregnation and coprecipitation methods. Effect of gold addition and active sloe formation were studied by investigating particle sizes of gold, amounts of oxygen adsorbed, adsorption properties of CO and NO, and reduction and oxidation properties, etc.. The gold particles of the catalyst by impregnation were irregular and very large as 30~100 nm, but those by coprecipitation were uniform and ultra-fine as about 4 nm. On $Au/Al_2O_3$ catalyst, the addition of gold to inactive $Al_2O_3$ caused the decomposition of $N_2O$, and CO was not irreversibly adsorbed while $O_2$ was atomically and irreversibly adsorbed. The adsorption sites of oxygen were attributed to the active sites which were restricted to the circumference of hemispherical gold particle-support interface rather than all atoms on the surface of gold particle. Also, CO was reversibly and irreversibly adsorbed on $Al_2O_3$ at low temperature, and the addition of gold weakened both reversible and irreversible adsorptions. The affinity for CO on $Au/Co_3O_4$ catalyst decreased conspicuously compared to $Co_3O_4$. The effect of gold addition did not appear in reduction step but did remarkably in reoxidation step; the added gold promoted the reoxidation of the reduced cobalt atoms.
