The properties of wastes for melting need to be considered to minimize the maintenance of refractory and to discharge the molten slags smoothly from a plasma torch melter. When the nonflammable wastes from nuclear facilities such as concrete debris, glass, sand, etc., are melted, they become acid slags with low basicity since the chemical composition has much more acid oxides than basic oxides. A molten slag does not have good characteristics of discharge and is mainly responsible for the refractory erosion due to its low liquidity. In case of a stationary plasma torch melter with a slant tapping port on the wall, a fixed amount of molten slags remains inside of tapping hole as well as the melter inside after tapping out. Nonmetallic slags keep the temperature higher than melting point of metal because metallic slags located on the bottom of melter by specific gravity difference are simultaneously melted when dual mode plasma torch operates in transferred mode. In order to minimize the refractory erosion, the compatible refractories are selected considering the temperature inside the melter and the melting behavior of slags whether to contact or noncontact with molten slags. An acidic refractory shall not be installed in adjacent to a basic refractory for the resistibility against corrosion.

This study was initiated to evaluate the applicability of Si slag as an adsorbent via investigation of the main properties of Si slag as an adsorbent aw well as characterization of adsorption features between aqueous arsenic and Si slag. The specific surface area of Si slag was measured to be 6.71 $m^2/g$ which seems to be slightly higher than those of other slags, but relatively lower than those of iron (oxyhydr)oxides extensively used for arsenic controlling processes. The point of zero salt effect (PZSE) of Si slag determined by potentiometric titration appeared to be comparatively high (7.3), indicating the Si slag may be favorably used for adsorption of arsenic which predominantly exists as an oxy-anions. The results of adsorption isotherm indicate that regardless of arsenic species, Langmuir-type isotherm is the most suitable to simulate the adsorption of arsenic onto Si slag. With regard to pH-dependence of arsenic adsorption, the adsorption maxima of arsenite was centered at pH 7, and the adsorption was remarkably decreased in the other pH conditions. In the case of arsenate, on the other hand, the adsorption was highest at the lowest pH (4.0) and then gradually decreased with the increase of pH. Based on the results of kinetic experiments, it is likely that the adsorption of arsenite approached equilibrium within 2 hr, but it took about 8 hr for arsenate adsorption to be equilibrated. In addition, the Pseudo second order was evaluated to be most consistent with the empirical data of arsenic adsorption onto Si slag in this study. Under identical conditions, the affinity of arsenate onto Si slag was estimated to be nearly 6 times higher than that of arsenite.

An Experimental study of cleaning solution has been performed on a high capacity steam boiler burning heavy fuel oil to on-line cleaning of deposit. The deposit is mixture of soot, slag, ash, metal oxide and clinker. The traditional technology of deposit cleaning was carried hand-crafted. The conventional technology of boiler cleaning method is mechanical removal by the worker while the boiler shut down operation. In this experiment, the deposit of mixture of soot, slag, ash, metal oxide and clinker has been removed by the cleaning agents without shut down of boiler burning. This study found out the optimum cleaning solution composition. The best results have been obtained when the mixture of ammonium nitrate and $MgNO_3$ were used in cleaning solution. The various transition metal effect was investigated for optimum mixing condition. In this research, the metal compound additive of the clean solution compoition was obtained. The combustion efficiency was improved by on-line cleaning with derived clean solution compoition. On-line cleaning method prevents the fouling and corrosion in the boiler and heat exchanger.

In this research, The basic physical properties and EMP shielding performance by thickness were evaluated for optimum composition of EMP shield concrete that can be applied on-site by mixing carbon-based materials with high conductivity into concrete that uses electric furnace oxidized slag (EOS). As a result of the evaluation, it was confirmed that the slump decreased as the amount of mixed carbon fib er (CF) increased, and increased when milled carb on (MCF) was mixed. As for the compressive strength, it was confirmed that EOS enhanced the strength compared to NA, and it was confirmed that the strength decreased when CF and MCF were mixed. As the thickness of the EMP shielding measurement increases, the shielding rate increases, and it was confirmed that the type of conductive material and the thickness of the test specimen have a greater influence on the shielding rate than the Amount of conductive material added. As a result of a comparative evaluation, EOS CF 0.2 is considered suitable for EMP shield concrete formulation.
Most of the domestic need for tin rely on imports. In this work, a pyrometallurgical process was investigated to recover pure tin from the tin oxides in tin bath which results from the production of flat glass and LCD panel. From the results on the effect of reaction temperature, the highest recovery percentage of tin was obtained at $1350^{\circ}C$. The recovery percentage of tin was improved to 88% by employing the first and second smelting step. Electrorefining of the crude tin thus obtained led to pure tin with purity higher than 99.9%.

This study is of manufacturing artificial lightweight aggregates using industrial wastes. The ingredients for manufacturing lightweight aggregate were stone sludge and bottom ash for main materials, and steel slag(SS), glass abrasive sludge(GS) and blast furnace slag(BS) respectively for accessory material. Their precursors were sintered in the range of $1,050{\sim}1,150^{\circ}C$ for 5 min. The sintered results show that the lightweight aggregate with SS had low water absorption ratio and density at $1,150^{\circ}C$. There's a possibility that if GS is used more than the range of this study, GS can be manufactured lightweight aggregate. But it is judged that BS are incongruent to be used for a raw material of lightweight aggregate.
The mixtures which are in the chemical composition of Portland cement were prepared from oyster shell, casting dust and BOF slag. The clinkerbility and the behaviour of formation of clinker minora]s were studied using the mixtures mainly by the mineral and microstructural observation. By virtue of the characteristics of starting raw materials, the clinkering temperature was lower as much as 100$^{\circ}C$ than that of a mixture prepared from normal raw materials. Uncombined calcium oxide was vanished entirely below 1350$^{\circ}C$. and the formation of major cement minerals such as alite and belite could be nearly accomplished without too much liquid phase within 1400$^{\circ}C$.
To quantitatively evaluate the influence of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) as a supplementary cementitious material on the life-cycle environmental impact of concrete, a comprehensive database including 3395 laboratory mixes and 1263 plant mixes was analyzed. The life-cycle assesment studied for the environmental impact of concrete can be summarized as follows: 1) the system boundary considered was from cradle to pre-construction; 2) Korea life-cycle inventories were primarily used to assess the environmental loads in each phase of materials, transportation and production of concrete; and 3) the environmental loads were quantitatively converted into environmental impact indicators through categorization, characterization, normalization and weighting process. The life-cycle environmental impacts of concrete could be classified into three categories including global warming, photochemical oxidant creation and abiotic resource depletion. Furthermore, these environmental impacts of concrete was significantly governed by the unit content of ordinary portland cement (OPC) and decreased with the increase of the replacement level of GGBS. As a result, simple equations to assess the environmental impact indicators could be formulated as a function of the unit content of binder and replacement level of GGBS.
A soil stabilization method is an effective and practical remediation alternative for arsenic (As) and heavy metal contaminated farmland soils nearby abandoned metal mine in Korea. This method is a technique whereby amendments are incorporated and mixed with a contaminated soil. Toxic metal bind to the amendments, which reduce their mobility in soil, so the successful stabilization of multi-element contaminated soil depends on the combination of critical elements in the soil and the type of amendments. The objective of this study is to investigate the treatment effects and applicability of limestone (LS) and steel refining slag (SRS) as the amendment for farmland soil contaminated with As and heavy metals, and a lab-column test was conducted for achieving this purpose. The result showed that soil treated with LS and SRS maintained pH buffer capacity and, as a result, the heavy metal leaching concentration was quite low below the water quality standard compared to untreated soil which leachate exceeding the water quality standard was observed, however, the arsenic concentration rather increased with increasing mixture ratio of SRS. This was believed to be related to phosphorus (P) contained in SRS, and dominancy in the competitive adsorption relation between As and P binding strongly to iron might be different according to soil characteristic. We suggested that LS is a effective amendment for reducing heavy metals in soil, and SRS should be used after investigating its applicability based on the adsorption selectivity of arsenic and phosphorus in selected soil.

The characteristics of the aluminum waste melting and the distribution of the radioactive nuclides have been investigated for the estimation on the volume reduction and the decontamination of the aluminum wastes from the decommissioning of the TRIGA MARK it and III research reactors at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI). The aluminum wastes were melted with the use of the fluxes such as flux $A:NaCl-KCl-Na_3AlF_6$, flux B:NaCl-NaF-KF, flux $C:CaF_2$, and flux $D:LiF-KCl-BaCl_2$ in the DC graphite arc furnace. For the assessment of the distribution of the radioactive nuclides during the melting of the aluminum, the aluminum materials were contaminated by the surrogate nuclides such as cobalt(Co), cesium(Cs) and strontium(Sr). The fluidity of aluminum melt was increased with the addition of the fluxes, which has slight difference according to the type of fluxes. The formation of the slag during the aluminum melting added the flux type C and D was larger than that with the flux A and B. The rate of the slag formation linearly increased with increasing the flux concentration. The results of the XRD analysis showed that the surrogate nuclide was transferred to the slag, which can be easily separated from the melt and then they combined with aluminum oxide to form a more stable compound. The distribution ratio of cobalt in ingot to that in slag was more than 40% at all types of fluxes. Since vapor pressures of cesium and strontium were higher than those that of the host metals at the melting temperature, their removal efficiency from the ingot phase to the slag and the dust phase was by up to 98%.
