  • Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. SPIONs are used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as contrast agents and targeted delivery in nanomedicine using external magnet sources. SPIONs act as an artificial peroxidase (i.e., nanozyme), and these reactions were highly stable in various pH conditions and temperatures. In this study, we report a nanozyme ability of the clustered SPIONs (CSPIONs) synthesized by the oil-in-water (O/W) method and coated with biocompatible poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). We hypothesize that the CSPIONs can have high sensitivity toward H2O2 derived from the reaction between a fixed amount of glucose and glucose oxidase (GOX). As a result, CSPIONs oxidized a 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) commonly used as a substrate for hydrogen peroxidase in the presence of H2O2, leading to a change in the color of the substrate. We also utilized a colorimetric assay at 417 nm using various glucose concentrations from 5 mM to 1.25 μM to validate β-D-glucose detection. This study demonstrated that the absorbance value increases along with increasing the glucose level. The results were highly repeated at concentrations below 5 mM (all standard deviations < 0.03). Moreover, the sensitivity and limit of detection were 1.50 and 5.44 μM, respectively, in which CSPIONs are more responsive to glucose than SPIONs. In conclusion, this study suggests that CSPIONs have the potential to be used for glucose detection in diabetic patients using a physiological fluid such as ocular, saliva, and urine.

  • While sedimentological researches on Western coastal tidal flats of Korea have been much pelformed previously, mineralogical and biogeochemical studies are beginning to be studied. The objectives of this study were to investigate mineralogical characteritics of the inter-tidal flat sediments and to explore phase transformation of iron(oxyhydr)oxides and biomineralization by metal-reducing bacteria enriched from the inter-tidal flat sediments from Muan, Jeollanam-do, Korea. Inter-tidal flat sediment samples were collected in Chungkye-myun and Haeje-myun, Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do. Particle size analyses were performed using the pipette method and sedimentation method. The separates including sand, silt and clay fractions were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffiaction (XRD). After enriching the metal-.educing bacteria from the into,-tidal flat sediments, the bacteria were used to study phase transformation of the synthesized iron (oxyhydr)oxides and iron biomineralization using lactate or glucose as the electron donors and Fe(III)-containing iron oxides as the electron accepters. Mineralogical studies showed that the sediments of tidal flats in Chung]rye-myun and Haeje-myun consist of quartz, plagioclase, microcline, biotite, kaolinite and illite. Biogeochemical researches showed that the metal-reducing bacteria enriched from the inter-tidal flat sediments reduced reddish brown akaganeite and mineralized nanometer-sized black magnetite. The bacteria also reduced the reddish brown ferrihydrite into black amorphous phases and reduced the yellowish goethite into greenish with formation of nm-sized phases. These results indicate that microbial Fe(III) reduction may play one of important roles in iron and carbon biogeochemistry as well as iron biomineralization in subsurface environments.

  • The objective of this research was to find out the physical properties, such as dispersion and coagulation, of soil minerals depending on the types and concentrations of the cations in aqueous solution. Hwangto samples were obtained from 90 to 130 cm from surface at Jangdong-ri, Donggang-Myon, Naju, Chonnam Province. The clay fraction (< $2\;{\mu}m$) was separated by sedimentation method from the bulk soils. Both Hwangto and clay fractions, and the same samples after removal of amorphous and crystalline iron oxides were used in this experiment. The effect of 4 cations ($Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$) and their concentrations on settling speed and basal spacing of the minerals were observed to examine the physical properties of the soil and clay minerals. Hwangto mainly consisted of quartz, and the clay fractions consisted of kaolinite, illite, and vermiculite. The bulk soils contained 16.3 mg/kg of amorphous iron oxides and 436 mg/kg of crystalline iron oxides. Clay fractions were dispersed better than bulk soils due to their smaller particle size than that of the bulk samples in the aqueous solution. The bulk and clay samples were dispersed better when iron oxides were removed because of coating of minerals by the iron oxides. Clay minerals were settled faster as the charge and the concentration of cations added increased. The d-spacing of kaolinite and illite did not change when 4 types of cations were added. The d-spacing of vermiculite showed $14.04\;{\AA}$ when divalent cations were added while that of vermiculite showed $13.9\;{\AA}$ when monovalent cations were added. It may be attributed to the hydration radii of cations. This study indicated that both coating of iron oxides on minerals and types and concentrations of cations affect dispersion of minerals in solution and d-spacing of expanding clay minerals such as vermiculite.

  • Soil dispersion and heavy metal leaching with two heavy metal-contaminated soils were studied to derive the optimal dispersion condition in the course of developing the remedial technology using magnetic separation. The dispersion solutions of pyrophosphate, hexametaphosphate, orthophosphate and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) at 1 - 200 mM and the pH of solutions was adjusted to be 9 - 12 with NaOH. The clay content of suspension as an indicator of dispersion rate and the heavy metal concentration of the solution were tested at the different pHs and concentrations of the dispersion solution during the experiment. The dispersion rate increased with increasing the pH and dispersion agent concentration of the solution. The dispersion efficiency of the agents showed as follows: pyrophosphate > hexametaphosphate > SDS > orthophosphate. Arsenic leaching was sharply increased at 50 mM of phosphates and 100 mM of SDS. The adsorption of $OH^-$, phosphates and dodecysulfate on the surface of Fe- and Mn-oxides and soil organic matter and the broken edge of clay mineral might decrease the surface charge and might increase the repulsion force among soil particles. The competition between arsenic and $OH^-$, phosphates and dodecylsulfate for the adsorption site of soil particles might induce the arsenic leaching. The dispersion and heavy metal leaching data indicate that pH 11 and 10 mM pyrophosphate is the optimum dispersion solution for maximizing dispersion and minimizing heavy metal leaching.

  • In steel factory, hot roller cleaning process produces a lot of iron oxide particles called as mill scale. Major components of these particles are wustite (FeO), magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$), and hematite ($Fe_2O_3$). In this study, we tried to produce pure magnetite from the mill scale because of the largest phosphate adsorption capacity of the magnetite. The mill scale was treated with acid (HCl+$H_2O_2$), base (NaOH), and acid-base ($H_2SO_4$+NaOH). Batch adsorption tests showed the acid and/or base treatment could increase the phosphate adsorption capacity of the iron oxides from 0.28 to over 3.11 mgP/g. Magnetite, which could be obtained by acid and base treatment of the mill scale, showed the best adsorption capacity. From the kinetic analysis, both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm well described the phosphate adsorption behavior of the magnetite. In Langmuir model, maximum phosphate adsorption capacity was found to be 5.1 mgP/g at $20^{\circ}C$.

  • The powder core, conventionally fabricated from iron particles coated with insulator, showed large eddy current loss under high frequency, because of small specific resistance. To overcome the eddy current loss, the increase in the specific resistance of powder cores was needed. In this study, copper oxide coating onto electrically conductive iron particles was performed using a planetary ball mill to increase the specific resistance. Coating factors were optimized by the Response surface methodology. The independent variables were the CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, coating time, ball size, ball mass and sample mass. The response variable was the specific resistance. The optimization of six factors by the fractional factorial design indicated that CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, and coating time were the key factors. The levels of these three factors were selected by the three-factors full factorial design and steepest ascent method. The steepest ascent method was used to approach the optimum range for maximum specific resistance. The Box-Behnken design was finally used to analyze the response surfaces of the screened factors for further optimization. The results of the Box-Behnken design showed that the CuO mass fraction and mill revolution number were the main factors affecting the efficiency of coating process. As the CuO mass fraction increased, the specific resistance increased. In contrast, the specific resistance increased with decreasing mill revolution number. The process optimization results revealed a high agreement between the experimental and the predicted data ($Adj-R^2=0.944$). The optimized CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, and coating time were 0.4, 200 rpm, and 15 min, respectively. The measured value of the specific resistance of the coated pellet under the optimized conditions of the maximum specific resistance was $530k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

  • Microbial desulfurization characterlstics of a bituminous coal have been determined by using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The effects of process variables (such as coal pulp density, particle size and addition of surfactants) on pyrite removal have been investigated in both shake and airlift-bioreactor culture experiments. In shake experiments, pyrite could be removed over 78% for pulp densifies below 20% (w/v) and removed below 40% for pulp densities over 30% (w/v) in 8 days. Pyrite removal decreased with increasing pulp densities, and it also decreased sharply with increasing particle sizes. In airlift bioreactor experiments, pyrite at 50% (w/v) pulp density could be removed about 50%. Its value is much higher than 15% at the same pulp density in a shake experiment. With addition of surfactants, pyrite removal was enhanced in shake experiments significantly, whereas it was slightly decreased in an airlift bioreactor experiment.

  • The Eoraesan area, Chungju, which is located in the northwestern part of Ogcheon Metamorphic Zone, Korea, mainly consists of the Neoproterozoic Gyemyeongsan Formation and the Mesozoic igneous rocks which intruded it. The metaacidic rocks (MAR) of the Gyemyeongsan Formation show a maximum radioactive value, and the Early Jurassic biotite granite is regionally distributed in this area. In this paper is researched the microstructure related to the growth of rare-earth mineral of allanite in the MAR, and is considered the source and occurrence time of rare-earth element (REE) mineralization. The MAR is mainly composed of alkalic feldspar (mainly microcline), quartz, iron-oxidizing mineral, biotite, muscovite, plagioclase, hornblende, allanite, zircon, epidote, fluorite, apatite, garnet, (clino)zoisite etc. The radioactive elements contained in the allanite cause a dark brown hale in the surrounding biotite, and the allinte also occurs as aggregate along the regional foliation. The deflection of regional foliation and the strain shadows, which are common to the pre-tectonic porphyroblast grown before the formation of regional foliation, can't be observed around most allanites (aggregates). The grain size and orientation of ironoxidizing mineral included in the allanite aggregate are the same as those in the matrix. It is recognized the hydrothermal conversion of hornblende to biotite due to the intrusion of igneous rock, and the secondary biotite occurs and contacts with allanite, zircon, epidote etc. These microstructures indicate that the rare-earth mineral of allanite (aggregate) grew by the hydrothermal alteration due to the intrusion of igneous rock after the formation of regional foliation. It is considered that the REE mineralization is closely related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic biotite granite which is regionally distributed in this area.

  • Magnetic and structural properties of $(CoFe_2O_4)_{1-x}(Y_3Fe_5O_{12})_x$ powders (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1) grown by a conventional ceramic method were investigated using X-ray diffractormeter (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The XRD results for the powders annealed at 120$0^{\circ}C$ indicated that no other peak was observed except for the ones from cobalt ferrite and the garnet powder. SEM micrographs indicated that cobalt ferrite and garnet powders were aggregated and completely formed together. It was hard to identify which part of the powders was the garnet or the cobalt ferrite. Mossbauer spectra for powders grown separately and mixed mechanically consisted of sub-spectra of cobalt ferrite and garnet, however, powders annealed together had an extra sub-spectrum, which was related with the interaction between iron ions at the grain surfaces of cobalt ferrite and the garnet: cobalt ferrite and garnet particles were located very closely. The value of the saturation magnetization measured by a VSM as a function of composition ratio agreed very well with the ones based on the theoretical calculation.
