Experimental study on operation of diesel autothermal reformer for SOFC system (SOFC 시스템용 디젤 자열개질기 운전을 위한 기초 연구)

  • Diesel is an excellent candidate fuel for fuel cell applications due to its high hydrogen density and well-established infrastructure. But, it is hard to guarantee desirable performance of diesel reformer because diesel reforming has several problems such as sulfur poisoning of catalyst and carbon deposition. We have been focusing on diesel autothermal reforming(ATR) for substantial period. It is reported that ATR of diesel has several technical advantages such as relatively high efficiency and fuel conversion compared to steam reforming(SR) and partial oxidation(POX). In this paper, we investigate characteristics of diesel reforming under various ratios of reactants(oxygen to carbon ratio, steam to carbon ratio) for improvement of reforming performances(high reforming efficiency, high fuel conversion, low carbon deposition). We also exhibit calculated heat balance of autothermal reformer at each condition to help thermal management of SOFC system.

Carbon Deposition on Nickel Catalyst for Pre-reforming of Propane (니켈 촉매를 이용한 프로판 예개질 반응의 탄소침적에 대한 연구)

  • Temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) is used to characterize coke species deposited on commercial nickel catalyst, C11-PR during propane pre-reforming. Propane pre-reforming performed under various condition, S/C from 1.5 to 2.5 and temperature from $350^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$. There are three kinds of coke species detected by TPO: (i) reactive coke, (ii) coke deposited on metal site and (iii) coke deposited on acid support. Coke deposited on metal and support are minimized although reactive coke is generated at temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ and S/C of 2.0. Reactive coke is expected to remove easily below temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Therefore, optimized pre-reforming condition for propane is $400^{\circ}C$ and S/C of 2.0.

  • The internal reforming of n-Butane on Ni-YSZ and Cu-Ceria-YSZ was investigated with anode granule at steam to carbon ratio from 0 to 3 and at temperature of $750^{\circ}C$. Although hydrogen production was lager at Ni-YSZ, resistivity for carbon deposition was better at Cu-Ceria-YSZ. These phenomena occur because unwanted side reaction go on with reforming reaction for hydrogen production at Ni-YSZ.

Modification of Graphite Surface By the Hydrothermal Coating of $TiO_2$ ($TiO_2$ 수열코팅에 의한 흑연의 표면 개질)

  • Hydorthemal coating technique has been sucessfully applied to improve oxidation resistance of graphite by forming rutile-TiO2 layer. Hydrothermal treatment of graphite in 0.2M TiCl4 aquous solution at 35℃ resulted in improved water wettability due to the formation of surface-modifying TiO2. The amount of TiO2 increased with temperature. In the presence of surface TiO2 layer, weight loss was reduced by 30%, while the initiation temperature of oxidation was lowered by 30℃.

  • 최근 사회전반에 걸쳐 사용되어온 경질 Cr 코팅이 제조 시 발암물질로 알려져 있는 $Cr^{+6}$을 발생함에 따라 이를 대체할 수 있는 표면개질법이 대두되고 있다. 또한 경질 Cr 코팅은 일반적으로 $200^{\circ}C$의 온도에서부터 경도가 서서히 감소되며 $400^{\circ}C$ 이상에서는 사용하기 어려운 제한점이 있다. 따라서 이 이상의 고온 안정성을 가지는 우수한 표면개질법에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다.

  • In this study, a novel microwave-matrix reformer was proposed to convert CH4, which is a major component, to a high quality hydrogen energy. And to identify this performance, it was investigated for O2/C ratio, steam feed amount and reformed gas recirculation which are affected for methane conversion and product gas yield. Through the parametric screening studies, optimal operating conditions were that O2/C ratio, steam feed amount and recirculation rate were 1.1, 10 mL/min and 30 L/min. In this conditions, CH4 conversion was 68.1%, H2 selectivity 77.2 and H2/CO ratio 2.62 which are possible applying SOFC stack for RPG (residential power generator).

Photo-catalytic Oxidation of Cyanide Complexes Associated with Heavy Metals Using UV LED and Pt-dopped TiO2 (자외선 LED와 백금으로 박막된 TiO2 광촉매를 이용한 중금속과 결합한 시안화합물의 광촉매 산화)

  • Cyanide can be leached out from the cyanidation method which has been used to extract high-purity gold and silver from ores, and it becomes a variety of cyanide complexes associated with heavy metals contained in ores. Such cyanide complexes are considered as persistent and non-degradable pollutants which cause adverse effects on humans and surrounding environments. Based on binding force between heavy metals and cyanide, cyanide complexes can be categorized weak acid dissociable (WAD) and strong acid dissociable (SAD). This study comparatively evaluated the performance of photo-catalytic process with regard to forms of cyanide complexes. In particular, both effects of UV LED wavelength and surface modification of photo-catalyst on the removal efficiency of cyanide complexes were investigated in detail. The results indicate that the performance of photo-catalytic oxidation is significantly affected by the form of cyanide complexes. In addition, the effect of UV LED wavelength on the removal efficiency was quite different between free cyanide and cyanide complexes associated with heavy metals. The results support that the surface modification of photo-catalyst, such as doping can improve overall performance of photo-catalytic oxidation of cyanide complexes.

Decomposition Characteristics of CF4 by SiC/Al2O3 Modified with Cerium Sulfate Using Microwave System (마이크로파를 이용한 황산세륨으로 개질화 된 SiC/Al2O3 촉매의 CF4 분해 특성)

  • Alumina-based catalysts with different Ce loadings were studied in the decomposition of $CF_4$ using microwave heating system. Heating material of microwave system used Silicon Carbide. The crystallographic phases of catalysts were investigated by XRD and decomposition rates of $CF_4$ were examined by GC-TCD. The catalysts of 10 wt% Ce modified $Al_2O_3$ showed higher $CF_4$ decomposition rate than un-modified $Al_2O_3$ for $500^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature. The k value of catalysts shows the order of $Ce(20)/Al_2O_3=Ce(0)/Al_2O_3<Ce(5)/Al_2O_3<Ce(10)/Al_2O_3$. XRD patterns of $Ce(0)/Al_2O_3$ were no difference before and after the reaction and showed $Al_2O_3$ phases. With the increase in Ce loadings, $CeO_2$, $AlF_3$ of XRD peaks was observed. The results was indicated that Ce modifed $Al_2O_3$ than un-modifed $Al_2O_3$ was decreased reaction temperature to $200^{\circ}C$ with same decomposition rate. Also the appropriated cerium sulfate loadings on $Al_2O_3$ were 5~10 wt%.

Effect of Pre-Treatment by Ozone on Chemical Surface Modification of Activated Carbon Fiber (오존에 의한 전처리가 활성탄소섬유 화학적 표면개질에 미치는 영향)

  • To increase specific surface property of activated carbon fiber(ACF), chemical activation(CA) using alkali metals and surface treatment(ST) using oxidant was widely used. The CA and ST process developed micro-pore on the surface of ACF by chemical reaction of the alkali metals and oxidative of oxidant, respectively. To improve the efficiency of CA process for developing micro-pores on the surface of ACF, the ST process was adopted as an pre-treatment method. After treatment of ST process, ACF properties was investigated depending on the ST pre-treatment process. FT-IR, TG and elemental analysis of the ACF are carried out, and an adsorption property of ACF was also evaluated using toluene(which in typical volatile organic matter). Once the single CA process is used, the surface area and adsorption capacity of ACF were increased from 1,483 to 1,988 $m^2/g$ and from 0.22 to 0.27 $g_{-Tol.}/g_{-ACF}$, respectively. On the other hands, once the ST and CA processes are used successively, the surface area and adsorption capacity of ACF are greatly increase(where the surface area is 2,743 $m^2/g$ and the adsorption capacity is 0.37 $g_{-Tol.}/g_{-ACF}$). It indicates that the combined process of ST and CA can improve the surface process properties of ACF.

Carbon Dioxide Reforming of Methane over a Ni/KIT-1 Catalyst (Ni/KIT-1 촉매를 이용한 메탄의 이산화탄소 개질반응 연구)

  • Thermodynamic analysis on carbon dioxide reforming of methane was performed using a computer program which can handle condensed species in the products, and the reforming experiments were conducted over $Al_2O_3$, $La_2O_3$, ZSM-5, MCM-41, KIT-1 supported nickel catalysts, and a commercial ICI 46-1. It was estabished that a system which consists of $CH_4$, $CO_2$, CO, $H_2$, $H_2O$, and C is appropriate for theoretical equilibrium calculations and addition of water vapor or oxygen was found to diminish the contribution of carbon dioxide in reforming. Silicate molecular sieve-supported catalysts such as Ni/ZSM-5, Ni/MCM-41, Ni/KIT-1 were effective for high $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ conversions as well as for high CO yield. Coke formation was suppressed when CaO was added as a promoter. Ni/Ca/KIT-1 which contains 10% Ni with 3% Ca showed conversion approaching equilibrium levels above $650^{\circ}C$ and maintained constant activity over 20 h. Despite increased space velocity, relatively high conversion and CO yield were observed.
