  • The effect of the code conversion process of Korean script (Hangul), also known as words for numbers, was investigated using event-related potentials (ERPs) during mental arithmetic operations. Study subjects were asked to determine whether the arithmetic results of a given target stimuli were correctly matched. Visual inspection and statistics of mean ERPs showed stimulus type-dependent processing rather than task-dependent processing. Results of addition and multiplication tasks revealed that the overall temporal profiles of the Arabic numerals were similar to the Hangul words for numbers. The only exception to this observation was a delayed positive-slope peak occurring around 300 ms, which was likely related to the encoding process of Hangul words for numbers to Arabic-digits, defined as a 'transcoding-related potential.' Source analysis confirmed that the topography of different waveforms for the two conditions was attributed to a single dipole located in the left temporo-parietal area; this area is known to be involved in Hangul words for number processing. These results suggest that the initial processing for encoding words for numbers was followed by arithmetic operations without direct access of internal number representation. • Maintaining a voice color is important when compounding both the normal voice because an emotion is not expressed with various emotional voices in a single synthesizer. When a synthesizer is developed using the recording data of too many expressed emotions, a voice color cannot be maintained and each synthetic speech is can be heard like the voice of different speakers. In this paper, the speech data was recorded and the change in the voice color was analyzed to develop an emotional HMM-based speech synthesizer. To realize a speech synthesizer, a voice was recorded, and a database was built. On the other hand, a recording process is very important, particularly when realizing an emotional speech synthesizer. Monitoring is needed because it is quite difficult to define emotion and maintain a particular level. In the realized synthesizer, a normal voice and three emotional voice (Happiness, Sadness, Anger) were used, and each emotional voice consists of two levels, High/Low. To analyze the voice color of the normal voice and emotional voice, the average spectrum, which was the measured accumulated spectrum of vowels, was used and the F1(first formant) calculated by the average spectrum was compared. The voice similarity of Low-level emotional data was higher than High-level emotional data, and the proposed method can be monitored by the change in voice similarity.

  • The process of international technical cooperation is quite complex. If the complexity is reduced and mirrored as a simple model, it could be of great assistance to government agencies and staff to support international technical cooperation. The purpose of this paper was to develop the underlying process model in international technical cooperation in the evaluation phase. The paper provides in the second chapter the theoretical background for developing a process model. In the third chapter, the features and the practical model of the evaluation phase are presented. Chapter four presents a case with substantial empirical analysis of the development model. EU FP7th as a case study was examined in the hindsight of international technical cooperation in the evaluation process. The concluding, chapter five, presents the limitations and future research directions. The results show that a new phase can be analyzed on the level of the evaluation step. The limitation of this study was that the empirical study consists of a single case study only. In the future, it will be necessary to study the sub stages of other steps in international technological cooperation.

  • In this research, various characteristics of South Korea's design flood have been examined by deriving appropriate design flood, using data obtained from careful observation of actual floods occurring in selected main watersheds of the nation. 19 watersheds were selected for research in Korea. The various characteristics of annual rainfall were analyzed by using a moving average method. The frequency analysis was decided to be performed on the annual maximum flood of succeeding one year as a reference year. For the 19 watersheds, tests of basic statistics, independent, homogeneity, and outlier were calculated per period of annual maximum flood series. By performing a test using the LH-moment ratio diagram and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test, among applied distributions of Gumbel (GUM), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Logistic (GLO) and Generalized Pareto (GPA) distribution was found to be adequate compared with other probability distributions. Parameters of GEV distribution were estimated by L, L1, L2, L3 and L4-moment method based on the change in the order of probability weighted moments. Design floods per watershed and the periods of annual maximum flood series were derived by GEV distribution. According to the result of the analysis performed by using variation rate used in this research, it has been concluded that the time for changing the design conditions to ensure the proper hydraulic structure that considers recent climate changes of the nation brought about by global warming should be around the year 2002.

  • This paper deals with characteristics analysis of a permanent magnet (PM) linear generator using analytical methods for wave energy harvesting. The wave energy is carried out from the movement of a yo-yo system. A linear generator using permanent magnets to generate a magnetic force itself does not require a separate power supply and has the advantage of simple maintenance. In addition to the use of a rare earth, a permanent magnet having a high-energy density can be miniaturized and lightweight, and can obtain high energy-conversion efficiency. We derived magnetic field solutions produced by the permanent magnet and armature reaction based on 2D polar coordinates and magnetic vector potential. Induced voltage is obtained via arbitrary sinusoidal input. In addition, electrical parameters are obtained, such as back-EMF constant, resistance, and self- and mutual-winding inductances. The space harmonic method used in this paper is confirmed by comparing it with finite element method (FEM) results. These facilitate the characterization of the PM-type linear generator and provide a basis for comparative studies, design optimization, and machine dynamic modeling.

  • This paper described the spatio-temporal distributions in the phytoplankton community, such as species composition, standing crops, and dominant species, from July 2012 to April 2013 in the Coastal Waters of Central South Sea (CWoCSS) of Korea. A total of 87 species of phytoplankton belonging to 52 genera were identified. In particular, diatoms and phytoflagellates comprised more than 62.1% and 37.9% of the total species, respectively. The phytoplankton cell density fluctuated with an annual mean of $7.9{\times}10^4cells{\cdot}L^{-1}$ between the lowest value of $1.0{\times}10^3cells{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in spring and the highest value of $4.5{\times}10^5cells{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in winter. The seasonal succession of the dominant species were Chaetoceros curvisetus, Ch. debilis in summer, Eucampia zodiacus in autumn, E. zodiacus, Thalassiosira curviseriata in winter and Skeletonema costatum -ls (like species), Leptocylindrus danicus in spring. According to principal component analysis, the phytoplankton community of the CWoCSS was characterized by the mixing rate between the freshwater inflow from Somjin River and the seawater of the South Sea, Korea.
