  • Mineralogical, textural, and chemical changes of chlorite by weathering in anorthosite in the Sancheong district were stucdied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis. Chlorite in anorthosite corresponds to ferroan clinochlore with IIb structural type. It weatheres firstly to regularly mixed-layered chlorite/vermiculite(C/V) and then, to halloysite without the intermediate stage of vermiculite. Clinochlore packet cleaves and transforms to several thin packets of C/V, which subsequently change to halloysite developint fan-sharped structures by large volume increase. Direct halloysitization of C/V is attributed to the rapid weathering of anorthosite.

  • The Honam Shear Zone, an important feature in the Phanerozoic geologic history of Korea, has attracted much attention due to its potential tectonic significance. However, little has been known about the displacement amount of the shear zone. Here, we propose a possible displacement marker for the shear zone. The geographic position and peculiar lithology of the Sancheong and Gaya anorthosite bodies in the south-central part of Korea suggest a NE-trending dextral strike slip shear zone that has a displacement of ca. 50 km. This hypothetical shear zone is considered as a part of the Honam Shear Zone since the former has the same trend and shear sense as the latter.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate short-term effects on soil properties and leaf characteristics after various treatments of soil amendments (organic fertilizer: 20 kg tree-1; compound fertilizer+wood-char: compound fertilizer 4 kg tree-1+wood-char 2 kg tree-1; lime fertilizer: 3 kg tree-1; mixed fertilizer: compound fertilizer 1 kg tree-1+organic fertilizer 10 kg tree-1+wood-char 1 kg tree-1; control) in chestnut (Castanea crenata S. et Z.) orchards of Jinju and Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do. Soil bulk density, soil pH, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ in chestnut orchards were not significantly affected by soil amendment treatments. However, leaf weight was significantly higher in the lime fertilizer ($0.65\;g\;leaf^{-1}$) in Jinju and the organic fertilizer ($0.68\;g\;leaf^{-1}$) in Sancheong than in the control treatments (Jinju: $0.46\;g\;leaf^{-1}$; Sancheong: $0.53\;g\;leaf^{-1}$). Leaf area was also significantly higher in the lime fertilizer ($79.1\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}$) in Jinju and the soil amendments ($70.4\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}{\sim}78.2\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}$) in Sancheong than in the control treatments (Jinju: $56.2\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}$; Sancheong: $60.5\;cm^2\;leaf^{-1}$). Nitrogen concentration of leaf increased significantly in the mixed fertilizer (2.51%) and the compound fertilizer+wood-char (2.50%) compared with the control (1.98%) treatments. The results suggest that soil properties were not affected by soil amendment treatments during short-term period, but leaf characteristics and nitrogen concentration can be an indicator of soil nutrient improvements in chestnut orchards.

  • The Hadong-Sancheong Proterozoic anorthosite complex occurs in the southwestern region of the Ryongnam massif. The geology of the area mainly consists of metamorphic rocks of the Jirisan metamorphic complex as basement rocks, charnockite, and the Hadong-Sancheong anorthosite, which are intruded by the Mesozoic igneous rocks. Hadong-Sancheong anorthosite complex is divided into the Sancheong anorthosite and the Hadong anorthosite which occur at north-southern and south area of the Jurassic syenite, respectively. The Hadong Fe-Ti-bearing dike-like ore bodies developed intermittently in the Hadong anorthosite with north-south direction and extend about 14 km. The Hadong Fe-Ti-bearing ore bodies consist mainly of magnetite and ilmenite with rutile, titanite, and minor amounts of sulfides(pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite). The Hadong Fe-Ti-bearing ore bodies show a paragenetic sequence of magnetite-ilmenite ${\rightarrow}$ magnetite-ilmenite-pyrrhotite ${\rightarrow}$ ilmenite-pyrrhotite-rutile-titanite(and/or pyrite) ${\rightarrow}$ sulfides. Equilibrium thermodynamic interpretation of the mineral paragenesis and assemblages indicate that early Fe-Ti-bearing ore mineralization in the ore bodies occurs at about $700^{\circ}C$ which corresponds to oxygen fugacity of about $10^{-11.8}{\sim}10^{-17.2}$ atm with the decrease tendency of sulfur fugacity to about $10^0$ atm as equilibrium of $Fe_3O_4-FeS$. The change of ore mineral assemblages from Fe-Ti-bearing minerals to sulfides in late ore mineralization of the ore bodies indicates that oxygen fugacity would have slightly decreased to ${\geq}10^{-20.2}$ atm and increased sulfur fugacity to ${\geq}10^0$ atm.

  • The anorthositic rocks of the study area are divided into the northern Sancheong and southern Hadong anorthositic rocks depending on the different distribution patterns and lithologies. In order to evaluate the characteristics of the hydrothermal systems developed in the study area, oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the anorthositic rocks were measured. Oxygen isotopic values of the plagioclase exhibit an interesting spatial distribution. Plagioclase collected from the Sancheong anorthositic rocks in the northern part tends to have a relatively restricted range of $\delta$$^{18/0}$ values between 7.3 and 8.8$\textperthousand$, which are heavier than 'normal' $\delta$$^{18/O}$ value (6-6.5$\textperthousand$) typical for plagioclase of the fresh mantle-derived anorthosite, whereas plagioclase from the southern part is characterized by a wide range of $\delta$$^{18/O}$ values between -4.4 and 8.2$\textperthousand$ and much lighter values than 'normal' value for plagioclase of the fresh mantle-derived anorthosite. Plagioclase from the middle part has $\delta$$^{18/O}$ values heavier than the plagioclase from the southern part, but lighter than that from the northern part. The spatial distribution of $\delta$$^{18/O}$ values suggests that the decoupled hydrothermal flow systems might have been developed in the study area. Meteoric water dominated in the hydrothermal flow systems developed in the southern area, whereas magmatic fluid dominated in the northern area. The relationship between water content and hydrogen isotopic composition of anorthosites shows a positive correlation. The positive correlation indicates that fluids exsolved from magma during magmatic differentiation caused deuteric alteration of anorthositic rocks involving replacement of pyroxenes to amphiboles. After the deuteric alteration, hydrothermal system developed by meteoric water dominated the southern area, and erased record of the hydrothermal system developed by magmatic fluid at earlier stage. However, the development of meteoric hydrothermal system has been limited in the southern area only, and could not affect the Sancheong anorthositic rocks in the northern area. The abundant occurrences of secondary alteration minerals such as sericite, calcite, and chlorite in the southern Hadong anorthosite relative to the northern Sancheong anorthositc seem to be related to the overlapping of two distinct hydrothermal systems in the southern area.

  • Syenite is not a common rock, unlike granitic rocks formed the major component of the continental crust. The aim of this study is to decipher the occurrences and detailed descriptive characteristics of the syenite distributed in Sancheong area, and to investigate the petrogenesis of the syenitic magma based on geochemical study. The dominant minerals in syenite are alkali feldspar (usually orthoclase and rarely microcline), plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, and quartz. Syenites are found in a wide variety of colors. The anhedral hornblende and biotite filling the boundary of feldspar and quartz indicate that the hydrous minerals were crystallized lately, and that water was insufficient at the beginning of crystallization in magma. According to the analysis of mineral composition, amphibole in syenite is mostly ferro-edenite, and the pressure is calculated as 3.3~4.9 kb with 11.9~17.3 km of emplacement depth. Biotite and pyroxene are plotted in the region of annite and hedenbergite, respectively. Based on petrochemical studies of major elements, syenite belongs to alkaline series, metaluminous, and I-type. On the other hand, the variation patterns of trace and rare earth elements of syenite differ from the patterns of diorite and granite. In the geochemical characteristics, syenite is different from gabbro-diorite spatially adjacent to syenite, as well as granite. These results suggest that each rock has been generated from the different sources of magma. Additionally, based on the experimental data, the syenitic magma can be formed (1) by the partial melting at a high pressure and dry system, (2) when the initial crystallization minerals to be residue with migration of the residual melts separated from the ascending cotectic magma (3) when fluorine compositions to be plentiful in the protolith and/or at depth of the magma. Based on the petrographic characteristics of the syenite, Sancheong syenitic magma may have been formed by partial melting in a dry system.

  • Occurrence of scarabs at sweet persimmon (Diospyros kaki var. Fuyu) orchards was investigated by mercury light traps every one week interval in several areas in Gyeongnam province including, Jinju, Sacheon, Sancheong, and Gimhae, from April to September in 2000 and 2001. In addition, damage of persimmon by scarabs was observed every ten days interval at three orchards in Jinju and at one in Gimhae from late May to late October. Although sixteen species of 12 genera were attracted to the traps, species and number of catches were different according to orchards and years. Holotrichia morosa was most dominant in Jinju, Sacheon, and Sancheong. Total number of scarabs attracted to the traps was highest at the orchard surrounded by chestnut orchards in Sancheong. Fruits of sweet persimmon were not damaged by scarabs at the studied orchards. However, leaves and calyxes were slightly damaged by Adoretus tenuimaculatus. Maximum average numbers of the damaged leaves and calyxes throughout the year by A. tenuimaculatus were 0.33 leaves from 10 new shoots and 0.07 calyxes from 15 fruits. Gametis jucunda and Popillia mutans damaged flowers and calyxes. Maximum average numbers of damaged flowers and calyxes by these 2 species were the same as 0.03 from 15 flowers and 15 calyxes, respectively. These levels of damage suggest that the scarabs are not economically injurious to sweet persimmon fruits in Korea.
