  • This study was carried out to clarify the turbidity change on three stands (Castanea crenata, Pinus densiflora and Plantation Land) by rainfall characteristics in small watershed. The change of turbidity showed in order of plantation land, Castanea stand and Pinus stand. The linear equations models between turbidity and rainfall intensity were able to account for 91% in Castanea stand, 80% in Pinus stand and 71% in plantation land. The linear equations models between turbidity and duration of rainfall were able to account for about 0-1% in three stands. The linear equations models between turbidity and preceding dry days were able to account for about 30% in three stands. The linear equations models between turbidity and accumulative rainfall were able to account for about 6-22% in three stands. The results indicates that soil runoff by land use and development of forest area could be applied to the mitigation measures such as afforestation and erosion check dam for erosion control and water quality management in small watershed.

  • This study has conducted to develop new gabion wall systems with vegetation base materials for stream bank stability and rapid rehabilitation. Vegetation base materials are primarily compounded with fine soil, organic composts and peat moss as plant fibers, a water retainer and a soil improver. Normally gabion wall systems resist the lateral earth pressures or stream power by their own weight. Therefore, fill material must have suitable weight, compressive strength and durability to resist the loading, as well as the effects of water and weathering. In this project, 100 to 200-mm clean, hard stones are basically specified, and about 50-mm rubbles are also used. Test application of new gabion wall system carried out in the stream bank of a small stream in the Gwangreung experimental forest, belonging to Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in December 16th, 2006. As a result of the analysis of hydraulic stability of new gabion wall system, gabion wall system has highest threshold shear stress when the gabion wall covered by vegetation. New gabion wall system is highly resistant to sliding and overturning because safety coefficients exceed 1.5. As a result of term of slope stability analysis of new gabion wall system by Bishop and Fellenius methods, stability of stream bank was highly increased after the construction of gabion wall. Therefore, new gabion wall system is effective to stabilize unstable stream bank.

  • Erosion control dams play a primary role in preventing or controlling natural disasters (landslide and debris flow etc.) and also conserve ecosystem in forested watersheds. This study examines structural characteristics of the dams such as the height of ecosystem control and the ecosystem permeability of the erosion control dams under standard drawings and the existing construction works. The objective of this study was to characterize the type classification of erosion control dams as ecosystem. Average permeability was highest on eco-piller dam (63.0%), followed in increasing order by wire rope (13.9%), silt dam (10.9%), multifunctional dam (7.2%), and gravity dam (0.4%). The height of ecosystem control was highest on gravity dam (3.2 m), followed in increasing order by multifunctional dam (1.7 m), wire rope dam (1.2 m), silt dam (0.6 m), and eco-piller dam (0.0 m). Criteria for defining the height of ecosystem control was indefinite. We grouped erosion control dams into three functional types (eco-connection, eco-semi connection, and eco-disconnection) by considering physical and structural characteristics such as the ecosystem permeability and the height of ecosystem control. The type of eco-connection (permeability > 20%) had connection areas from streambed to adjacent riparian areas, and these connection areas serve as ecosystem corridors for fauna and flora. Typical wildlife species includes mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. The type of eco-semi connection (5% < permeability < 20%) had < 2 m in the eco-barrier height from streambed, however, this type of dams partially serve as wildlife corridors and often provide fish ways. The type of eco-disconnection (permeability < 5%) had > 2 m in the eco-barrier height from streambed, thereby preventing wildlife movement.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the openness of erosion control dams situated near mountain stream. The ecological functions of erosion control dams analyzed by such openness for adequately protect and manage the diversity of species and to prevent disasters. The obtained results were as follows. When structurally modifying or changing non-permeable, gravity type dams with a passing rate of less than 1% into open-type dams, the passing rate increased by about 77 times more from 0.72% to 55.8%. Except for closed, gravity type erosion control dams that are constructed with a special purpose such as creating sand deposits and reservoirs, there is a need to construct and improve the dams into permeable type dams that can relatively satisfactorily perform various functions such as carrying soil and sand to the downstream region and create a ecological corridor upstream and downstream for fish and amphibians. The openness based on the blocking height of the erosion control dam varies depending upon the height of the base part and the depth of the substructural part. It must be designed based on the on-site conditions and the purpose of the construction. The functional types of erosion control dams based on the open form of the cross-section as follows: the fish traffic type, flood control type, reservoir type for forest fire control), non-permeability type for soil and rock blocking, net type for blocking the rock flow and the particle screen type.

  • Recently, mountain disasters such as landslides and debris flows have flowed along mountain streams and hit residential areas and roads, increasing damage. In this study, in order to reduce damage and analyze causes of mountain disasters, field surveys and Terrestrial LiDAR terrain analysis were conducted targeting debris flow areas, and debris flow flow processes were simulated using FLO-2D and RAMM models, which are numerical models of debris flows. In addition, the debris flow deposition area was calculated and compared and analyzed with the actual occurrence section. The sedimentation area of the debris flow generation section of the LiDAR scan data was estimated to be approximately 21,336 ㎡, and was analyzed to be 20,425 ㎡ in the FLO-2D simulation and 19,275 ㎡ in the case of the RAMMS model. The constructed topographical data can be used as basic data to secure the safety of disaster risk areas.

  • To understand the sulfur flux and cycle in the forest catchment, the hydrological processes and chemical variation of soil solution, groundwater and stream water were analyzed at the Matsuzawa catchment located in the Kiryu Experimental Basin, Shiga Prefecture, central Japan. Unsaturated soil layer at the upper slope of catchment was the source area of ${SO_4}^{2-}$, and deep soil layer and groundwater were the sink zone of ${SO_4}^{2-}$. The vertical distribution of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ concentrations in groundwater affected seasonal variation of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ concentrations in stream water, as groundwater level changed. It is reasonable to assume that each hydrological processes in the forest catchment play an important roles in the retention and discharge of ${SO_4}^{2-}$.

  • This study was carried out to reveal the influence of discharge change on matters and stream water quality between pH, EC and dissolved matters obtained by observation of long-term and short-term on stream water quality and separated runoff components from stream water by using HYCYMODEL. From January in 1998 to September in 1999, it was estimated by relationships of character of water quality and discharge for the experimental watershed in Mt. Palgong. The results were summarized as follows : 1. Annual average pH values of stream water in 1998 and in 1999 were 6.48(6.22~6.89) and 6.52(5.75~7.18), respectively. The observed annual average pH values were maintaining identical values in general, but pH values decreased continuously during the four months after thinning in the experimental watershed. So thinning is suspected of the major cause for the decrease. 2. Annual average EC values of stream water in 1998 and in 1999 were $26.69(17.95{\sim}33.5){\mu}S/cm$ and $25.19(17.5{\sim}33.8){\mu}S/cm$, respectively. The observed annual average EC values were maintaining identical values in general. 3. As a result of the comparison of average dissolved ions of rainfall and stream water, $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ showed minus values between incomings and outgoings. $Na^+$ and $NO_3{^-}$ among the dissolved ions of stream water showed the highest concentration out of cations and anions respectively. 4. By the change of pH value in stream water due to rainfall events, pH value decreased with increasing runoff as pH value increased before and after peak flow. 5. By the change of EC value in stream water due to rainfall events, EC value decreased with increasing runoff of first rainfall as EC value changed with runoff before and after peak flow. 6. As the runoff increased, the concentration of $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$, total cation, $Cl^-$, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ in stream water lowered. On the other hand, the runoff decreased, their concentration in stream water tended to get high. But in terms of $NO_3{^-}$ and total anion, they turned out vice versa. $Mg^{2+}$ produced no reaction. 7. The base flow among runoff components separated by using HYCYMODEL influenced greatly on pH, EC, concentration of cation and anion.
