Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an essential role in a variety of cellular physiological phenomena. The present study assessed the signaling axis that mediates the lysophosphatidic acid (LPA)-induced migration of SKOV-3 cells. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) stimulated SKOV-3 cell migration in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Similarly, LPA stimulated SKOV-3 cell migration and the phosphorylation of Akt in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The pharmacological inhibition of LPA receptors (LPA1/LPA3) significantly suppressed LPA-induced SKOV-3 cell migration. However, IGF-1-induced SKOV-3 cell migration was not affected by the inhibition of LPA1 and LPA3. Pharmacological inhibition of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) or Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) significantly suppressed LPA-induced migration, whereas the inhibition of MAPK kinase (MEK) had no effect. Inhibition of PI3K or ROCK completely suppressed LPA-induced ROS generation, and suppression of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase (NOX) or chelation of ROS by N-acetylcysteine (NAC) blocked LPA-induced SKOV-3 cell migration. LPA-induced ROS generation was suppressed by silencing Rictor or Akt1 but not Raptor or Akt2. Silencing Rictor or Akt1 significantly suppressed LPA-induced SKOV-3 cell migration, whereas silencing Raptor or Akt2 had no effect. Finally, the overexpression of the constitutively active form Akt1 (CA-Akt1) significantly enhanced the LPA-induced migration of SKOV-3 cells. Given these results, we suggest that LPA stimulates SKOV-3 cell migration by ROS generation, which is mediated by the mTORC2/Akt1/NOX signaling axis.
Electrodialysis of acetic acid was studied to find out the trend of the transport of organic acids through ultrafiltration and ion exchange membranes. The net transport rate of acetic acid was determined from the electro-migration velocity relative to the electro-osmotic flow rate through the membrane. Electro-osmosis flows through ultrafiltration membranes were from the anodic side to the cathodic side in the presence of electric field. The surface of ultrafiltration membrane was measured by the electro-osmotic flow to be charged negatively. Different transport behaviors of acetic acid were found with the ultrafiltration membranes of different materials. In general, regenerated cellulose membranes (YM series) were more effective than polysulfone membranes (PM series) for the transport of acetic acid. The transport of acetic acid was affected by electric strength, distance between the electrodes, surface area of electrode, temperature, and pore size of membrane. The transport rate through the ion exchange membrane was 1.5 to 3 times of those through the ultrafiltration membranes at the constant current of 150 mA in the experimental ranges. The transport rate of acetic acid through the ion exchange membrane increased by 10% with a pulse electric field of 10 sec/hr.
In order to investigate the rates and factors of slow mass movement on a subalpine slope of Mount Halla, two painted stone lines were monitored in a bare patch at 1,710 m a.s.l. The mean movement of surface gravels is 58.2 cm, equivalent to 0.24 cm/day. However, the rates of movement vary with seasons. Compared with 0.05 cm/day of a non-frozen season, a frozen season shows 0.3 cm/day. It implies that the movement of surface gravels could be largely controlled by periglacial processes during a frozen season. In particular, frost creep including needle ice creep plays a main role in the movement of gravels under the thermal and soil conditions which are favorable for needle ice development. Since line II is located at a steeper slope than line I, the movement of line II was always larger than that of line I. However, slope gradient is not the most dominant factor contributing the movement of gravels, which can be interrupted by downslope big gravels and vegetation patches. The size and specific weight of gravels also can influence the movement of gravels. Porous and light scoriae result in relatively quick movement of gravels on the subalpine slope of Mount Halla.
Humic acid has been extracted and purified from biologically nondegradable humic substances. Using the ion exchange capability of carboxylic acids which are the main component of the humic acids, a membrane was prepared with poly(viny1 alcohol). Its transport behavior of biologically active ions, $K^+$and $Na^+$, were investigated. The ion transport velocity increased with hydrogen ion concentration, especially, in the range of $10^-1$~$10^0$. The selectivity increased with increasing the concentrations of $K^{+}$ and Na$^{+}$, In particular, the transport velocity of $K^+$ increased twice compared to that of $Na^+$ at the 100 hydrogen ion concentration. In this regards, humic acid may be used as a new material for ion exchange membranes.
Liquid chromatographic enantiomer separation of amino alcohols was performed on several chiral columns based on polysaccharide derivatives under the mobile phase conditions containing acid or base additive. The chromatographic parameters were greatly influenced by the nature of the mobile phase containing acid or base additive as well as the used chiral columns. Compared to chromatographic results obtained in the mobile phase containing base additive (0.1% triethylamine), especially, Chiralcel OD showed dramatically enhanced separation factors and resolution factors with reduced capacity factors under the mobile phase condition containing acidic additive (0.1% trifluoroacetic acid). When the mobile phase containing 0.05% trifluoroacetic acid and 0.05% triethylamine was used on Chiralcel OD, the greatest separation factors and resolution factors among all other mobile phase conditions in this study were observed.

Habitat loss by industrialization, urbanization, and poaching reduced the population of Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetabus ussuricus) population in South Korea in the late 20th Century. In the early 2000s, the Korean Government had begun a restoration project of Asiatic black bear. In 2017, a bear was found in Mt. Sudosan, Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, approximately 80 km from Mt. Jirisan where the bear was first released. Genetic analysis confirmed that this bear was one of the Jirisan bear population, estimating that this bear escaped from its habitat. After trapping this bear in Mt. Sudosan, it was rereleased again in Mt. Jirisan, but this bear moved again to Mt. Sudosan. After 2nd trapping and releasing, this bear came back to Mt. Sudosan. In Mt. Sudosan, this bear covered a greater distance and moved more as compared to other Asiatic black bear in Mt. Jirisan. Today, this bear has its home range within Mt. Sudosan area after the third release, estimating that this bear is stable and active in this area. Our findings are the first case showing the interesting pattern of repetitive disperse activities and habitat expansion of Asiatic black bear. The results of this case are valuable information that can be used for wildlife conservation and restoration of endangered wildlife.

The study looked into the type and characteristics of debris landforms in Mt. Mudeung. By focusing on the representative area, we aimed to categorize the debris landforms based on the morphologic and genetic characteristcis. The types of debris areas in Mt. Mudeung can be divided into the exposed debris type, mixed type of matrix, and the boulder-hidden type. Supply of block in the debris slope area displays different features depending on types of rocks. For the stony slopes of andesite, the block must be moved from the columnar joint or cliff in the upper part. The andesite debris slopes display dominant edge shape while displaying no round shape. The granite stony slopes display dominant round shape and the present exposed slope was assumed to be formed as the core stone which was deep weathered moved along slope during the periglacial era and the matrix was removed after post-glacial era. The movements of blocks are assumed to be caused by solifluction process. The joint area where granite and andesite areas meet, granite is located beneath andesite area, and this implies that blocks were actively freezing and creeping by solifluction and freezing and thawing at that time. It can be assumes that the granite matrix formed plain slope and then andesite boulder covered up the slope. Currently, the blocks in the stony slopes of Mt. Mudeung shows almost no mobility and the stony slopes created under periglacial climate can be considered to be fossil landform.

Place names or toponyms including Gosan, Busan and Buraesan can be very important and interesting storytelling subjects in terms of geomorphology and folklore studies also. Several studies done by folklorists, those sixty five mountain-moving stories with similar names can be grouped into several categories through formation processes and origin, transport media and imposition of tax. Geomorphological studies can focus on transport media. They can be classified into six different categories; 1) flood from upstream through river, 2) voluntary walk of mountains, 3) by wind, 4) upwelling from underground, 5) involvement of mythical beings such as Mago Granny or Dokkaebi (kind of goblin), or 6) migration by ocean current.
