  • In this study, we examined immuno-modulatory activities of crude polysaccharides from wild ginseng adventitious roots (WGAR). The crude polysaccharide (WGAR-CP) was isolated from WGAR by hot water extraction, ethanol precipitation, and dialysis. The major constituents in WGAR-CP were neutral sugar (64.77%), and uronic acid (34.32%). WGAR-CP demonstrated anti-complementary activity dose-dependently. The immuno-modulatory effects of WGAR-CP were also analyzed by measuring nitric oxide and cytokines in the supernatants of mouse peritoneal macrophages. Mouse peritoneal macrophages stimulated with WGAR-CP produced nitric oxide and various cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-12 in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, WGAR-CP may have immuno-modulatory activities by activating a complementary system and macrophages, which produces cytokines.

  • A total of 120 pigs (Berkshire) were used to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with artificial culture medium of wild ginseng (CWG) on the physico-chemical characteristics of pork About $60{\pm}3kg$ pigs were randomly assigned to 4 pens based on sex and diet (C: commercial diet feed or T: commercial diet+1 L CWG per day for 70 days). Pigs were slaughtered at approximately 110 kg live weight, and proximate composition and physico-chemical characteristics were measured in pork loin. The moisture content, hardness and chewiness of pork were higher in gilt fed CWG than in gilt fed the control diet, but the water-holding capacity of pork and $L^*$ values of fat color were lower. The shear force and $a^*$ values of pork were higher in barrow fed CWG than in harrow fed the control diet. The crude fat content, hardness, cohesiveness, chewiness of pork and $a^*\;and\;b^*$ values of fat color were lower in barrow than in gilt, but the pH was higher. These results imply that the proximate composition and physico-chemical characteristics of pork could be affected by dietary supplementation with CWG and the sex of the pig, while the texture properties and at values of pork may be improved with dietary CWG.

  • Skin is the largest organ that protects the body from the external environmental factors such as smog, cigarette smoke, UV. Protective skin barrier is composed with keratinizational keratinocytes and intercellular lipids such as ceramides, cholesterols and fatty acids combined by the lamellar liquid crystal structure. In this research, we confirmed that the Jeju wild ginseng (JWG) extracts dose-dependently increased the expression of serine-palmitoyltransferase (SPT) protein which is associated with ceramide biosynthesis. In addition, emulsion containing 5% JWG extract was applied on skin of human volunteers for 2 weeks and then significantly reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) compared to that of control group. As a results, JWG extract increased the biosynthesis of ceramides that is the key components of the skin lipid through enhancing expression of SPT. In addition, JWG extract reduced TEWL resulting in improvement of skin barrier function. In this context, we suggest that JWG extract could be used as a skin barrier enhancer and moisturing agents in cosmetic fileds.

  • The quality characteristics of jelly-containing vinegar drinks were divided into three stages in this study. The jelly, which differs from the contents of the vinegar drink, sharply decreased the pH. After sterilization, hardness was significantly decreased, and the formulation was not maintained, which was considered the effect of low pH and high total acidity of vinegar drinks. Different experiments confirmed that pH and sterilization heating conditions were the major quality variables for gelation as both sodium citrate content and jelly hardness were correlated before and after sterilization. The hardness of the jelly, which differs in gel content, correlated with the increase in gelation content both before and after sterilization. Therefore, considering the spout jelly of a vinegar drink, pH of 3.5-3.7 and a content of glucomannan and caragenane mixed gel were considered appropriate to match the product's sensory properties.

  • Wild ginseng pharmacopuncture was administered to 2 patients with pseudo-gynecomastia. Each patient received the treatment once a week, total 5 times. Outcome was measured by the comparison of photos which were taken before and after the treatment. One case showed significant difference in the breast shape and size after the treatment and the patient was satisfied with the result. However, the other case did not show noticeable change but subtle one, and satisfaction degree of the patient was also low. From the above cases, to figure out the effect of wild ginseng pharmacopuncture on pseudo-gynecomastia, further studies and reports on other affecting factors should be followed.

  • This study was to investigate the effects of cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture and thread implantation therapy on abdominal obesity. These 5 subjects were selected among the patients who were 30 to 38 years old. We practiced combined therapy such as cultivated wild ginseng pharmacopuncture on 5 points of abdominal fat and thread implantation therapy on 10 points of abdominal fat, twice a week, totally for 2 weeks. And the other therapies and recommendations about nutrition and exercises were totally excluded for 2 weeks. Body weight was reduced by 1.0 kg. Fat mass was reduced by 1.36 kg. And waist circumference was reduced by 3.98 cm. Thus it was acknowledged that waist partial fat could be reduced only by 2 interventions within 2 weeks. It could be more effective than any other combined therapy program including 10 therapy methods of oriental medicine.

  • This study looks at the origin of a wild-ginseng, Korean ginseng, and traces the origin of associated wild-ginseng digging customs back to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. These historical customs helped Korea gain control over its wild ginseng resources following Japanese colonization acts, Korea's present-day forest laws, and Korean Civil Law. Prior to Japanese colonial rule in Korea (1910-1945), ginseng digging was a common custom, but Imperial Japan distorted Korea's own legal principles of the public rights of wild-ginseng digging during this colonial period. Distorted legal principles concerning digging customs continued after Korea's liberation from Japanese rule and were maintained until the enforcement of the Korean Civil Law in 1960, when legal principles of the right of common were changed to special servitude. The origin of the right of common can be found in the Sichojang of the Joseon Dynasty. The Sichojang, a place where local residents jointly collected firewood and fed livestock, was the minimum right to life and interest at the time. Since the right of common was the right to life, Imperial Japan attempted to abolish it, but it was never successful. In addition, distorted legal principles have been maintained in present-day forestry-related laws and regulations. Over 75 years since the liberation from Japanese rule in 1945, it is imperative to break away from the distorted legal principles and acknowledge that digging custom rights have changed from common customs to a special servitude under Korean Civil Law. Hence, an organization of wild-ginseng diggers is an unincorporated association, and their wild-ginseng digging customs can be constituted as a special servitude. Hence, their practices should be considered valid under customary law. Through this, it will be possible to clarify the legal nature and grounds for ginseng-related wild-ginseng digging activities, as well as the civil responsibility for the activities of wild-ginseng diggers.
