In order to evaluate the sufficient etching time for successful bonding and also minimizing unnecessary mineral loss, the enamel surface roughness analysis was performed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Sixty extracted sound human molar teeth were imbedded in the center of acrylic cylinder using self-curing clear resin exposing buccal surface, and then polished with series of SiC paper(220, 500, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000 grit). Each specimen was randomly assigned to six groups(N=10). 37% phosphoric acid was applied to the polished tooth surface for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 seconds respectively and washed with copious water. After the surface roughness analysis, five roughness parameters(Sa, Sq, Sz, Sdr, Ra) were statistically analysed by ANOVA and Duncan post hoc test. We found that the all five parameters had higher roughness value in 30 seconds etching time, especially parameter Sz showed the lowest value in 10 seconds etching time and the highest value in 30 seconds etching time compared with the other etching times(p<0.05).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of application time and phosphoric acid etching of 8th generation adhesives containing functional monomer on adhesive performance in primary teeth. 80 extracted non-carious human primary teeth were selected and divided into 8 groups based on 3 factors: (1) adhesive: G-Premio bond and Single bond universal; (2) application time: shortened time and manufacture's instruction; (3) acid etching mode: self-etching and total-etching. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine, and fractured surface were observed under scanning electron microscope. Microleakage was evaluated by dye penetration depth. G-Premio bond were not significant different in shear bond strength and microleakage depending on application time of adhesive and acid etching mode. In Single bond universal, shear bond strength of short application time was significantly lower than that of long adhesive application time (p = 0.014). Clinically applicable shear bond strength values (> 17 MPa) were identified in all groups. These results suggested that G-Premio bond be used clinically for a short application time without phosphoric acid etching.

This study examined the remineralization effect of CPP-ACFP according to the etching time and the frequency of application. A CPP-ACFP paste was formed from a combination of CPP-ACP paste and fluorine. The remineralization effect of CPP-ACFP was measured according to the etching time and the frequency of applications of CPP-ACFP. The microhardness of 64 teeth was measured as the sound sample and observed by scanning electron microscopy. As a result, the effect on remineralization of the enamel increased with increasing etching time and frequency of application. Therefore, a CPP-ACP paste combination to fluorine in the tooth mineral CPP-ACFP paste fluoride application can be supplied with the material-advisable enamel remineralization.

Mechanical preparation has been introduced to provide the sealant retention. The objective of this study was to compare the fissure penetration and the microleakage of pit and fissure sealant using mechanical preparation(mechanical preparation + acid etching) and acid etching only. An additional objective of this study was to compare the fissure penetration and the microleakage of unfilled and filled sealant in both methods. Sixty human premolars extracted for orthodontic purpose were selected. Thirty teeth were acid etched alone and remaining thirty teeth were prepared with a $\frac{1}{4}$ round bur and then acid etched. One-half of teeth in each surface treatment method were sealed with unfilled sealant and the other half were sealed with filled sealant. All of the teeth were thermocycled for 1200 cycles at $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ and immersed in 5% methylene blue for 24 hours. Each tooth was sectioned bucco-lingually at mesial pit and distal pit and examined under a Measurescope. In the case of mechanical preparation, fissure penetration of sealant was significantly increased compared with the case of acid etching only(P < 0.05). The filled and unfilled sealant using mechanical preparation showed significantly decreased microleakage when compared with the unfilled sealant using acid etching only(P < 0.05). No differences were found in fissure penetration and microleakage between unfilled and filled sealant in both methods. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that mechanical preparation and filled sealant are recommended when placing pit and fissure sealant. However, further clinical studies should be performed in regard to microleakage.
Recently, self-etching adhesive system has been introduced to simplify the clinical bonding proce- dures. It is less acidic compared to the phosphoric acid, thus there is doubt whether this system has enough bond strength to enamel. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of additional etching on the adhesion of resin composite to enamel. Ninety extracted bovine permanent anterior teeth were used. The labial surfaces of the crown were ground with 600-grit abrasive paper under wet condition. The teeth were randomly divided into six groups of 15 teeth each. Clearfil SE $Bond^{\circledR},\;Adper^{TM}$ Prompt L-Pop and Tyrian $SPE^{TM}$ were used as self-etching primers. Each self-etching primers were applied in both enamel specimens with and without additional etching. For additional etching groups, enamel surface was pretreated with 32% phosphoric acid (UNI-ETCH, Bisco, Inc., Schaumburg, IL. USA). Hybrid resin composite Clearfil AP-X, (Kuraray Co., Ltd., Osaka, Japan) was packed into the mold and light-cured for 40 seconds. Twenty-four hours after storage, the specimens were tested in shear bond strength. The data for each group were subjected to independent t - test at p < 0.01 to make comparisons among the groups. In Clearfil SE $Bond^{\circledR}$, shear bond strength of additional etching group was higher than no additional etching group (p < 0.01). In $Adper^{TM}$ Prompt L-Pop and Tyrian SPE, there were no significant difference between additional etching and non-etching groups (p > 0.01). In conclusion, self-etching adhesive system with weak acid seems to have higher bond strength to enamel with additional etching, while self-etching adhesive system with strong acid seems not.

This study aimed to evaluate surface morphology and resin tag penetration of resin infiltration into primary anterior teeth after enamel deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) prior to phosphoric acid ($H_3PO_4$) etching. Ninety primary anterior teeth with non-cavitated caries lesion were devided five groups according to enamel pretreatment as follows, group I-15% hydrochloric acid (HCl) 2min. ; group II-5.25% NaOCl 1min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 1min. ; group III-5.25% NaOCl 2min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 1min. ; group IV-5.25% NaOCl 1min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 2min. ; group V-5.25% NaOCl 2min., 35% $H_3PO_4$ 2min. Fifteen teeth were examined etched surface structure using field emission-scanning electron microscope. Seventy five teeth were infiltrated with resin, maximum penetration depth and percentage penetration were analysed using dual fluorescence confocal microscopy. As the application time of NaOCl increased, ratio of enamel type I, II were increased. Percentage penetration (PP) was higher in group V than group II, III (p < 0.05). PP of group IV, V did not show any differences. Non-cavitated caries of primary anterior teeth can be treated with resin infiltration. Enamel deproteinization with NaOCl prior to 35% $H_3PO_4$ etching could be an alternative of 15% HCl etching in resin infiltration.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare the bonding characteristics of a new self-adhesive resin cement to dentin, which does not require bonding and conditioning procedure of the tooth surface, and conventional resin cement. The effect of phosphoric acid etching prior to application of self-adhesive resin cement on the shear bond strength was also evaluated. Material and methods: Fortyfive non-carious human adult molars extracted within 6 months were embedded in chemically cured acrylic resin. The teeth were ground with a series of SiC-papers ending with 800 grit until the flat dentin surfaces of the teeth were exposed. The teeth were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups. In group 1, self-adhesive resin cement, RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) was bonded without any conditioning of teeth. In group 2, RelyX Unicem was bonded to teeth after phosphoric acid etching. For group 3, Syntac Primer (Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein) was applied to the teeth before Syntac adhesive (Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and Helibond (Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein) followed by conventional resin cement, Variolink II (Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein). To make a shear bond strength test model, a plastic tuble (3 mm diameter, 3 mm height) was applied to the dentin surfaces at a right angle and filled it with respective resin cement, and light-polymerized for 40 seconds. All the specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours before test. Universal Testing Machine (Z020, Zwick, Ulm, Germany) at a cross head speed of 1 mm/min was used to evaluate the shear bond strength. The failure sites were inspected under a magnifier and Scanning Electron Microscope. The data was analyzed with One way ANOVA and Scheffe test at ${\alpha}$= 0.05. Results: (1) The shear bond strengths to dentin of RelyX Unicem was not significantly different from those of Variolink II/Syntac. (2) Phosphoric acid etching lowered the shear bond strength of RelyX Unicem significantly. (3) Most of RelyX Unicem and Variolink II showed mixed fractures, while all the specimens of RelyX Unicem with phosphoric acid etching demonstrated adhesive failure between dentin and resin cement. Conclusion: Shear bond strength to dentin of self-adhesive resin cement is not significantly different from conventional resin cement, and phosphoric acid etching decrease the shear bond strength to dentin of self-adhesive resin cement.
The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different acid etching times on the enamel surface morphology, shear bond strength and debonding failure mode of orthodontic attachment. Ninety six extracted human mandibular premolars were divided into eight groups of twelve teeth. The buccal surfaces were etched with $37\%$, phosphoric acid for 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 seconds, respectively. Two teeth from each group were used for scanning electron microscope examination. On the etched buccal surfaces of remaining teeth, orthodontic attachments(lingual buttons) were bonded with light cured orthodontic adhesive. Twenty foot hours after bonding, a Instron universal testing machine was used to determine shear bond strength of orthodontic attachment to enamel. After debonding, bases of orthodontic attachments and enamel surfaces were examined under stereoscopic microscope to determine failure mode. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out with one nay ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test The results were as follows; 1. There was no statistically significant difference in shear bond strengths between the various etching times(p<0.05). 2. The failure modes of orthodontic attachments had some differences. In 5, 10 and 15 seconds etching groups, the percentage of adhesive/enamel interface failure was higher than that of adhesive/attachment interface failure. On the contrary, in 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 seconds etching groups, the results were reversed. 3. The etching patterns of enamel surfaces had a great variation. So, we could not find any correlation between etching pattern and bond strength. 4. The findings in this study indicate that in vitro reduction of the etching me to 5 seconds maintains clinically acceptable bond strength. However, further study is required to determine the cause of failure mode in 5, 10 and 15 seconds groups.

Attachment of the orthodontic bracket conducted during the window opening procedure can result in failure due to various adverse conditions such as blood or saliva contamination, or other wet conditions. For the success of the bracket attachment, reduction of total operation time is crucial. The purpose of this literature is to evaluate the differences between the final resultant shear bond strength of the conventional method of using phosphoric acid and self-etching primer, and that of the operation time-reduced method in which the curing step is omitted subsequent to the primer application. A total of 40 human maxillary incisors were prepared. Group I(control group) and II were etched with 37% phosphoric acid and Group III and IV were conditioned with self-etching primer. Attachment of the group I and III was conducted by manufacturer's instructions. The operation time of Group II and IV was reduced by eliminating the curing step after the primer application. The resultant shear bond strength of each group was measured and an adhesive remnant index (ARI) was recorded. The mean shear bond strength of group I, II, III, and IV were 14.16 MPa, 8.33 MPa, 8.29 MPa, and 6.48 MPa respectively. Significant differences could only be found between the control group and the experimental groups (p < 0.05). The ARI indicated no significant difference among all groups.

For the purpose of convenience and reducing time, newer bonding agents have been developed for composite resin restoration. Recently developed one bottle bonding system including etching, primer and adhesive can make procedures simpler and less technique-sensitive than old generation adhesives. The aim of this study was comparing the shear bond strength of new dentin bonding agents to the 5th generation bonding agent which had an etching step. 78 premolar teeth were randomly divided into three groups which were treated with $Tetric^{(R)}$ N-Bond Universal (Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein), $GC^{(R)}$ G-Premio BOND (GC Co., Japan) without additional etching step and $3M^{TM}$ Single Bond2 (3M ESPE, USA) with an etching step following manufacturer's instructions. $Filtek^{TM}$ Z-350 (3M ESPE, USA) composite resin was applied and light cured over bonding agents. For shear bond strength evaluation, universal testing machine was used with a wedge technique. As a result, shear bond strength of one step bonding agents was lower than two step bonding agent and there were statistically significant differences between them (p < 0.05). In addition, within the result of two new bonding agents, $Tetric^{(R)}$ N-Bond Universal showed significantly higher shear bond strength than $GC^{(R)}$ G-Premio BOND (p < 0.05).
