  • We fabricated thick film monopole antennas using Li-doped BiNbO$_4$ ceramics and investigated their electrical properties as a function of the Li-doping concentration. Compared with undoped BiNbO$_4$ ceramics, addition of Li$_2$CO$_3$ improved dielectric constant by increasing of ionic polarization, but reduced quality value by increasing of lattice distortion. Antenna properties like gain, bandwidth and radiation patterns were also greatly affected by the addition of Li$_2$CO$_3$. With increasing amount of Li$_2$CO$_3$, the bandwidth of ceramic monopole antenna was increased to 81.7 %, but the gain was reduced to -10.03 dBi. Also radiation patterns were so distorted and showed low dB value by increasing of dielectric loss.

  • Since the morden targets are of high speed and getting quiet in both active and passive mode, the necessities of developing advanced SONAR system capable of performing target motion analysis (TMA) and target classification are evident. In order to develop such a system, the scattering mechanism of complex bodies needs to be, some extent, fully understood and modeled. In this paper, MOving Spread Target(MOST) signal simulation model is presented and discussed. The model is based on the highlight distribution method, and simulates pulse elongation of spread target, doppler effect due to kinematics of the target as well as SONAR platform, and distribution target strength of each highlight point (HL) with directivity. The model can be used in developing and evaluating advanced SONAR system through system simulation, and can also be used in the development of target state estimation algorithm.

  • The polarimetric backscattering coefficients of a wet-land rice field which is an experimental plot belong to National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology in Suwon are measured using ground-based polarimetric scatterometers at 1.8 and 5.3 GHz throughout a growth year from transplanting period to harvest period (May to October in 2006). The polarimetric scatterometers consist of a vector network analyzer with time-gating function and polarimetric antenna set, and are well calibrated to get VV-, HV-, VH-, HH-polarized backscattering coefficients from the measurements, based on single target calibration technique using a trihedral corner reflector. The polarimetric backscattering coefficients are measured at $30^{\circ},\;40^{\circ},\;50^{\circ}\;and\;60^{\circ}$ with 30 independent samples for each incidence angle at each frequency. In the measurement periods the ground truth data including fresh and dry biomass, plant height, stem density, leaf area, specific leaf area, and moisture contents are also collected for each measurement. The temporal variations of the measured backscattering coefficients as well as the measured plant height, LAI (leaf area index) and biomass are analyzed. Then, the measured polarimetric backscattering coefficients are compared with the rice growth parameters. The measured plant height increases monotonically while the measured LAI increases only till the ripening period and decreases after the ripening period. The measured backscattering coefficientsare fitted with polynomial expressions as functions of growth age, plant LAI and plant height for each polarization, frequency, and incidence angle. As the incidence angle is bigger, correlations of L band signature to the rice growth was higher than that of C band signatures. It is found that the HH-polarized backscattering coefficients are more sensitive than the VV-polarized backscattering coefficients to growth age and other input parameters. It is necessary to divide the data according to the growth period which shows the qualitative changes of growth such as panicale initiation, flowering or heading to derive functions to estimate rice growth.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of inset fed microstrip antenna loaded with CSLR(complementary single loop resonator) are studied. Effective permeability parameters of the SLR unit cell is retrieved from simulated scattering parameters, and structure parameters of the SLR unit cell are selected so that effective permeability is negative value at the operating frequency. The optimized inset fed microstrip antenna loaded with SLR for a $3{\times}3$ array in the ground plane of a conventional patch antenna is designed and simulation results of return loss and radiation pattern are shown. At resonant frequency 2.82 GHz, the overall dimension of the proposed antenna is reduced by approximately 56.8% compared to the conventional inset fed antenna. Simulation results are obtained by 3D FEM solver(Ansoft's HFSS).

  • In underwater, such as fish farm and sea, turbidity is increased by water droplets and various suspended, therefore light attenuation occurs depending on the depth also caused by the scattering effect of light float. In this paper, in order to improve the visibility of underwater images obtained from these aquatic environment, we propose a visibility enhancement method using a haze removal method based on dark channel prior and a trained color transform model. In order to train a color transform model, we used underwater pattern images captured from Pohang and Yeosu, and to measure the performance of the proposed method, we carried out experiment of visibility enhancement using underwater images collected from Yeosu, Geomundo and Philippines. The results show that the proposed method can improve the visibility of underwater images of various locations.

  • The velocity dispersion of surface acoustical wave(SAW) of Si layer/mesh Au/Si substrate was measured by the frequency analysis technique of backward radiation at liquid/solid interface. The difference of backward radiation patterns depending on used transducers (2, 5, 10MHz) confirmed that the backward radiation phenomenon was caused by the energy radiation from SAW generated in surface region. An ultrasonic goniometer was constructed to measure continuously the angular dependence of backscattered intensity. The angular dependences of backward radiation(5MHz) were measured for Ni layer/Al substrate specimens that were bonded by epoxy involving different content of Cu powder. It was known that the width and pattern of backward radiation had informations such as the velocity dispersion, bonding quality and structure of surface region.

  • A summary of the development and verifications of a computer code being developed at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) for calculating the radar cross section(RCS) of complex targets is presented. The complex targets are modeled in terms of patches and wedges. This code utilizes physical optics, physical theory of diffraction and shooting and bouncing rays method to calculate the RCS of complex targets. For the verification of the RCS prediction code, a simple-shaped scale-model was manufactured and the RCS was measured at the POSTECH compact range. The obtained RCS was processed to give frequency-domain RCS patterns and ISAR images. The predicted RCS shows good agreement with measured one. The RCS prediction methods presented here are applicable to stealth design and target recognition.

  • Described is method for development of an optical roughness measurement sensor for in-subequality assurance in the precision grinding. Main approach is made based upon the Brckmann's light scattering theory, in which general solutions of the optical scattering behaviour are given under many simplifying assumptions on the model of the surfaces illuminated. For the ground surface, the assumptions are verified through computer simulation and experimental work in order to examine the validity of Beckmann's theory on predicting the optical responses according to the roughness variation. As a result, an optical monitoring strategy is derived which can evaluate the roughness value of the ground surface by statistically detecting the pattern of intensity distribution of the scattered light. Finally, the strategy is proven by comparing with the results using the stylus method.

  • In this paper, we fabricated thick film monopole antennas using Bi$_2$O$_3$-doped BaTi$_4$$O_{9}$ ceramics for small size and broadband intenna. In the result, the high permittivity was fixed and the quality factor was also significantly decreased by the formation of secondary phase of Bi$_4$Ti$_3$O$_{12}$ repleced by addtion Bi. The antenna property influenced by the quality value more than the permittivity. The bandwidth of antenna was increased to 33 %. On the other hand, the gain was reduced to -4.3 dBi. Also radiation patterns were showed low dBi value by increasing of dielectric loss. Specially, Measured x-y plane radiation patterns was distorted as the dispersion of wavelength and high permittivity difference. But the result is showed execellent bandwidth because of low quality value in all formation range.nge.

  • This paper was conducted as an attempt in order to construct the data bank of target strength for acoustic estimation of fish length in the coastal waters of Korea. The fish length dependence of acoustic target strength for 13 large yellow croakers (Pseudosciaena crocea) at 75 kHz was investigated and the prediction of the target strength by using the Kirchhoff-Ray Mode model (KRM model) was compared with target strength measurements. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. In the averaged target strength pattern for 13 large yellow croakers the maximum target strength was -35.13 dB at $-13.35^{\circ}$ on a tilted angle. 2. The relationship between fork length(L, cm) and averaged target strength(TS, dB) was expressed as follows; TS=23. 76log (L) -73.45 (r=0.47) TS=20log(L) -67.35 From this result, the conversion coefficient was -73.45 dB and 6.1 dB lower than the coefficient -67.35 dB where the value of the slope of the regression equation is forced to be 20. 3. Averaged target strength and a length conversion coefficient derived from a target strength histogram for 13 large yellow croakers of mean length 25.59 cm were -41.23 dB, -69.72 dB, respectively. 4. In the range of $$2;{\ll} L (fish length /{\lambda}(wave length);{\ll}40$$, the prediction of the averaged target strength by the KRM model increased gradually with the increasing of $L/{\lambda}$ and was lower than the measured target strength.
