  • We analyze the link availability of terrestrial free-space optical (FSO) communication systems in Korea. For this purpose, we utilize several theoretical models to calculate the power losses induced by absorption and scattering in the atmospheric channel, using five-year meteorological data for three major cities in Korea (Seoul, Busan, and Daejeon). Also, we estimate the power variations at the receiver caused by scintillation in the data. Those power losses and variations are used to estimate the availability of FSO links in the three cities. The results show that link availability is estimated to be over 95% in Daejeon for a 3.5-km FSO link, when the transmitter power and receiver diameter are greater than 10 dBm and 7 cm respectively. Slightly worse link availabilities are obtained for Busan and Seoul.

  • When examining a patient using SPECT, gamma rays emitted from the body decrease or scatter. And when they reach the detector they spread in accordance with physical characteristics and geometric shapes of the scanner, quantitative analysis was difficult. For exact quantitative analysis of gamma rays emitted from the body, so that they must be considered to correction about PVE(partial volume effect). In this paper, sinogram filter was implemented to solve comprehensive PVE of SPECT. According to the results in which implemented filter was applied, partial volume effect caused by SPECT was removed. To compare proposed method and conventional method, PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) was executed. As a result, proposed method was indicated as 7dB, conventional method was indicated as 14db respectively. dB(decibel) level of the proposed methods is lower, since the MSE(mean square error) becomes greater because scattered ray was removed, PSNR value is low. Therefore, by applying the proposed method for removing the PVE of SPECT imaging method, the image quality is improved.

  • A series of performance measurements of positron emission tomography (PET) were performed following the recommendations of the Computer and Instrumentation Council of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. We investigated the performance of the General Electric $Advance^{TM}$ PET. The measurements include the basic intrinsic tests of spatial resolution, scatter fraction, sensitivity, and count rate losses and randoms. They also include the tests of the accuracy of corrections: count rate linearity correction, uniformity correction, scatter correction and attenuation correction. GE $Advance^{TM}$ PET has bismuth germanate oxide crystals (4.0mm transaxial ${\times}$ 8.1mm axial ${\times}$ 30.0mm radial) in 18 rings, which form 35 imaging planes spaced by 4.25mm. The system has retractable tungsten septa 1mm thick and 12cm long. Transaxial resolution was 4.92mm FWHM in 2D and 5.14mm FWHM in 3D at the center. Average axial resolution in 2D decreased from 3.91mm FWHM at the center to 6.49mm FWHM at R=20cm. Average scatter fraction of direct and cross slices was 9.57%. Dead-time losses of 50% corresponded to a radioactivity concentration of $4.86{\mu}Ci/cc$ and a true count rate of 519 kcps in 2D. The accuracy of count rate linearity correction was 1.84% at the activity of $4.50{\mu}Ci/cc$. Non-uniformity was 2.06% in 2D and 2.93% in 3D. Remnant errors after scatter correction were 0.55% in 2D and 4.12% in 3D. The errors of attenuation correction were 6.21% (air), 0.20% (water), -6.32% (teflon) in 2D and 5.00% (air), 6.94% (water), 3.01% (teflon) in 3D. The results indicate the performance of GE $Advance^{TM}$ PET scanner to be well suited for clinical and research applications.

  • We have studied methods of detecting attenuation of solid materials such as silicon wafer and piezoelectric $LiTaO_3$ by means of optical probing techniques. We have performed measurements of surface acoustic waves(SAW) generated from 90 degree wedge type transducer and also from inter-digital transducers(IDT). SAW of 20.0 MHz was generated on a silicon wafer from the 90 degree wedge type transducer and those of 20.8 and 14.5 MHz are generated on a $LiTaO_3$ from the IDT. Then any surface-corrugation resulted from the above SAW was investigated by He-Ne laser beams. We projected laser beams, which were modulated by an optical chopper, on the SAW of the same frequency and then measured the scattered beam by the lock-in amplifier. We modulated and synchronized both SAW and the incident laser beam as well as the phase sensitive detector(PSD) to the same frequency in order to simplify our measurement system. We obtained the attenuation coefficients of SAW to be $0.62{\sim}0.75dB/mm$(from IDT1, 20.8 MHz), and $0.60{\sim}0.72dB/mm$(from IDT2, 14.5 MHz), $0.83{\sim}1.28dB/mm$(from the wedge type), respectively.

  • In underwater, such as fish farm and sea, turbidity is increased by water droplets and various suspended, therefore light attenuation occurs depending on the depth also caused by the scattering effect of light float. In this paper, in order to improve the visibility of underwater images obtained from these aquatic environment, we propose a visibility enhancement method using a haze removal method based on dark channel prior and a trained color transform model. In order to train a color transform model, we used underwater pattern images captured from Pohang and Yeosu, and to measure the performance of the proposed method, we carried out experiment of visibility enhancement using underwater images collected from Yeosu, Geomundo and Philippines. The results show that the proposed method can improve the visibility of underwater images of various locations.

  • In this paper, we present surface-to-underwater visible light communication systems using white LEDs. Pulse position modulation (PPM)-based analogue data communications and on-off keying-based digital data communications systems are developed. Inexpensive and commercial power-LEDs and photo-diodes are used to construct two types of systems. We report the experimental results obtained from the prototype systems to show the possibility of an optical underwater visible light transceiver as a basis for short range underwater wireless network. Their performance deteriorates more than the atmosphere's one because of attenuation and scattering of the light in water, but these results are promising for the potential to create more robust network interface that improve medium performance such as a LED modulation and a photo-detector demodulation.

  • Laser induced incandescence, LII, recently developed technique for measuring soot concentration in flames, can overcome most of limitations of conventional laser extinction measurement. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the effect of laser intensity, detection wavelength, and also laser beam quality on both LII signal at a particular position and peak-to-centerline LII signal ratio. The results of LII signal with increasing laser intensity shows its near-independence of laser intensity once threshold level of laser intensity has been reached. However, this near-independence depends on laser beam quality and the incident optical setup. The peak-to-centerline LII signal ratio slowly but continuously increases with laser power. This fact is due to the dependence of LII signal on particle mean diameter. LII signal is attenuated during it passes through the flame containing soot particles. The attenuation rate is inversely proportional to detection wavelength. In this study, LII signal at 680 nm band is 10% greater than the signal at 400 nm band.

  • The particle amount monitoring technique using ultrasound is proposed to determine the proper maintenance time of the filter in the supply process of pure gas in the unit of oxygen plant. There are advantages that it is adaptable in high temperature and high pressure, and it is not disturbed by being exposed in the gas flow, and it can be implemented very economically. The applicability of the ultrasonic technique is pre-studied through the theoretical analysis for the dependency of attenuation of ultrasonic wave on the particles in the gas flow. For the purpose, absorption, scattering and dispersion models are considered, and the attenuation by absorption and the change rate of the propagation speed are calculated fur the specific range of particle size and the ultrasonic wave frequency. It was expected by simulation that the absorptive attenuation by particles was the most sensitive to the change of particle amount. The experimental result showed high correspondence with the theoretical expectation so that this ultrasound attenuation measurement was proved to be highly effective for monitoring the amount of floating particles in the gas flow.

  • The significant additional path loss is caused by scattering, diffraction, and attenuation of propagation. Most of the wave propagation models for rural areas mainly have considered the influence of topography but ignored the effects due to land usage. The goal of this paper is development of the field strength prediction program for Cheju which is used the contour map and the effects due to land usage. In oder to classify the propagation path and divide the environment of land, data of the terrain and the land-cover are formed into a pixel. Two-ray model is transformed into equivalent model by the predicted reflection coefficient and the slope of terrain. For non line of sight, the additional loss is determined by quantitative analysis. The result show good accord and the wave propagation model program can be applied to predicted the service region in rural area of Cheju.

  • Characteristics of a piezoelectric material are evaluated to pick up the optimal crystal cut and propagation direction for a SAW device. For the piezoelectric single crystal $LiTaO_4$, such items are investigated as the Rayleigh wave velocity, the electromechanical coupling factor, the surface permittivity, the frequency-temperature coefficient, the air loading attenuation, the pure mode propagation, the beam steering and the misalignment sensitivity. Theoretical calculations reveal that Y-cut and Z-propagation is the optimal SAW propagation path. The results are confirmed through experiments. The method empolyed in this paper is applicable to other crystals, too, either single or poly crystals.
